Although the final advice of the book is nothing new-- eat fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean meats and avoid all the chemical crap-- I did find the discussions about different chemical sensitivities and allergies to be helpful. I also appreciated that the author put a lot of emphasis on other health problems that people don't often associate with being overweight. I'm beginning to understand all the intricacies of metabolism and health more, without being so concerned about outward ...more

A really great book that helped me learn a lot about my body and the effects that processed foods have on the body, as well as whole foods. Offers great recipes and an entire eating plan to make your body happy on the inside. Not sure if I have the time to complete all the phases but I have taken all the basics to heart and am starting next on the Ultra-Metabolizm cookbook so I can make some of these easy, delicious and healthy foods to eat. I'd recommend this book for anybody to read.

Validation, yet again, of my fundamental belief that so much of how we feel and behave is guided by what we consume. Yes, Virginia, food IS medicine.

So this morning I will head off to the Farmers Market for some more reinforcement, and lots of great stuff. Reading some of the other reviews reminds me yet again how totally fortunate I am to live on the Central Coast of CA where we have Farmers Markets pretty much 7 days a week, year round...and even though the Downtown Santa Cruz Wed. aftern...more

What's fun about this book (besides the subtitle) is that it quite convincingly makes the case that if you want to have a truly healthy diet, you need to quit your job and devote pretty much all of your waking life to growing your own foods, pressing your own cooking oils, shopping in health food stores, baking, cooking, and doing research on several food safety websites the author lists. You'd probably spend a good 2-3 hours a day just reading food labels and cross-checking health food store it...more

Seemed to be well-researched and a lot of what he says actually makes sense. However, almost 4 weeks into his plan, I haven't seen any results. On the other hand, I feel like I'm consuming way more calories than I should be, and yet I haven't gained any weight. So maybe it is working, it's just that my body is very happy with the weight I'm at, and so it's not budging. I already did a lot of the things he recommends, as far as avoiding overly processed foods, etc.

For somebody who eats like ...more

This has been my daily devotional, constant reminder, wealth of knowledge of what to eat and not to eat to feel better. Altough the recommended menues and recipies are a little too deep in organics, I take all the ideas of what to eat/not to eat that make sense for improvement and incorporate those ideas into my life. Reading a couple of pages or a chapter a day during my weight loss journey has aided in losing 25 lbs over the last 2 years -- and during that time I have read this book 5 times ...more

Long story short, the things in most of the food in our supermarket shelves are bad for us! The fresher the better. The way we gain and lose weight is NOT just a matter of how many calories we eat and how many calories we burn... it also has to do with the state of our metabolisms and the kinds of foods we consume (particularly certain ingredients and additives, ESPECIALLY high fructose corn syrup, which is in so much of what we eat!) We are programmed to process ONLY fresh, whole foods like our...more

By the same author as ULTRAPREVENTION...more outstanding, uncommon health advice...things you really didn't want to know about what you're eating (but really should know) and a plan to become your healthiest self ever. I am on a state-wide search for a doctor like the author (Mark Hyman) who will work as a prevention specialist before problems arise, not just an emergency band-aid after problems arise. I think I've found a few doctors like this, but they are in Indy and Ft. Wayne. I am going...more

Very interesting book, chalk full of information on how your body and metabolism actually function. It seems rather obvious that in the future we will be using food and other natural means for 'medicine' instead of taking so many pills. This is still cutting edge stuff, but it will be mainstream in a number of years.

I've been following the guidelines to boost my metabolism and so far I've lost eight pounds in two weeks. On top of that, I'm less tired throughout the day and my skin is clearer ...more

I like the idea of this book, but just find it unrealistic. I'd like to eat more organic and whole foods, but cost and availabilitymake that difficult.

A lot of the ingredients necessary are quite expensive or difficult to find (at least in my area). I want to try some of the recipes and see if I notice any difference in the way I feel, but I will not be completely changing the way I eat.

I'm sorry Dr Hyman, but you lost me at "eliminate sugar at all costs". That's just not g...more

I read a lot of diet books. I learned from this book (yet again) that I am someone who needs to seriously think of food as fuel for my metabolism...and I can't slack off eating simple carbs. Other than that, I could also benefit from looking at various stressors in my life and working to counteract them. That part of the book was good. The Ultra metabolism (tm) slinging around and repetitiveness of the message were slightly annoying.

It was very interesting to find out how the body works in relationship to what we feed it, but I can't see this translating into real life...at least not my real life. I'm way to busy to research what the chicken I'm eating was eating when it was alive and to cut out pizza and a good homemade cookie for the rest of my life. It does provide tips on eating better and being more aware, which is always a good thing.

So far I can't put it down. (Except to write this... and go to work... sleep... etc) I find it more informative than the first book of his I read The Ultrasimple Diet. This book gives you a more detailed understanding of how your body deals with the food that goes into it and how that should affect your food choices, which I like.

I read this book when I was losing all of my baby weight last year. I thought it was very interesting, and even though I cannot specifically remember anything from it (other than stuff like, "Eat Breakfast!", and "Eat 14 small meals a day!), but I am sure it helped me lose weight. Hey! I've gained 7 lbs. I should read it again! :-)

My absolute favorite nutrition book. (Not that I am the expert by any stretch of the imagination.) But this book totally changed the way I look at food and altered my eating habits for the better. It also introduced me to integrative medicine which I think is the wave of the future, I hope.

This book was very helpful in understanding the processes that go on in the body. The author's ideas remind me very much of Dr. Andrew Weil's books which I recommend even more highly than this book. Great suggestions for health and weight loss. It motivated me to get goin'!

This book is very informational about how to have a great metabolism. I guess mine has slowed way down because I'm struggling losing my pregnancy weight plus all that I put on before that. I am still reading it, but loving it so far.

Dr. Hyman was/is the revolutionary force behind the wide acceptance of systemic inflammation as the root of all ailments. This is a must-read, esp in our carbo-laden society. And I highly recommend his blog-by-email, which is free.
