Lights and shadows, it's the second book by this author I've read and she writes with a certain edge I like.

First the good things:

The main couple is hot, well matched, riveting. Court is the healer, but he came out of an abduction broken and removed from life, even if he literally owns the spark of life. First the good things:

The main couple is hot, well matched, riveting. Court is the healer, but he came out of an abduction broken and removed from life, even if he literally owns the spark of life. Dane is energetic, bossy and never defeated. They are perfect for each other, because Dane is determined to help and fix Court in every aspect of life, being there even when Court doesn't want to admit he needs him. The sex scenes were long and maybe a bit too frequent, especially in the beginning, but they showed the traits of the characters' personality, and they were really really hot. Dane can ratchet up the level of excitement just by promising it. A wonderful dirty talker.

The paranormal aspect was interesting, but it hinted at a few things that weren't really developed, unless there's a plan for a sequel. As we learn in the story, Court is not the only one who has a super power, during his abduction he meets a guy who can ignite fires with his mind. Probably there are other people like them, and the enemies were looking for them, I don't know, but it was interesting and it wasn't really explained. Then there was an interesting aspect of Court's power: Court is afraid that when he heals someone, they are changed, or their metabolism is changed and their bodies have to compensate for it. It was another thing which had potential but was left hanging.

And now the not so good things:

The dreams were confusing and they didn't help the pacing, in my opinion. It was as if the story stalled, instead of progressing or being enlightened or making the reader curious. It was as if the symbolism was forced onto me, I don't know how to explain, but it didn't work. Anyway, the last dream was the best, very sweet, and it gave a good closure to the whole dream thing, and in retrospect it shed some light on it, but while I was reading I wasn't impressed in a positive way.

The bad guys were not so convincing. There was a good level of complication, but the religious aspect made the bad guys as fanatics and maybe it's me, but instead of making them into worthy opponents it made them into lunatics with a touch of stupidity. Underwhelmed.

So, it's a good story, with extremely exciting and interesting elements, but a tad too long or too complicated. The author can write characters that you'd like to slap for their exuberance, but are curiously lovable by the end.(less)

I liked this book; it was very different from the majority of paranormal romances out there in that there are no vampires, or shifters... just a few humans with supernatural powers. Although, at the same time there's a lot of the same cliches, e.g. Courtenay trying to push Dane away because it's dangerous to be around the supernaturally-gifted 'freak'.

I really enjoyed Dane and Court's story. The beginning was very intense, probably one of the most intense opening chapters I have ever read! I did get a little confused at times throughout the book, but nothing too major.

Dane was fuckhawt! He knew how to design and execute complex, multi-orgasm plans...paying attention to every explicit detail. Fucking Hot!. These guys were really hot...and sweet together. (view spoiler)...more

The first thing I noticed was the interesting diction. Very much immediate, in-your-face appealing.
The beginning’s simply beautiful in its stark terror. The gruesome condition Dane is found in… And then it becomes even more horrifying. I was trying not to cry by chapter two.

Dane is… special. Initially he seems like a windbag and I can see why people are annoyed by him. He is a force of nature, though. (Ha! I jotted that down before the book used the same words.) Dane is… special. Initially he seems like a windbag and I can see why people are annoyed by him. He is a force of nature, though. (Ha! I jotted that down before the book used the same words.) It does not take long to discover some disarming qualities in him and eventually he just completely wins you over with his bossiness and joyful determination.
Court? How could you not like Court? He’s got the quietly suffering goodness part down pat.

And between the two of them, the dialogue and interactions are sharp and fast and just about perfect, if somewhat drenched by lust. That last bit, though, isn’t quite the same as I’ve encountered in other books; it’s actually part of the plot, if you will, part of Dane’s personality and his, uh, technique for getting his way.

One of the key sentences is, “What Dane wants, Dane works at getting.” This is quite accurate. And thank god for it, or nothing in this story would ever work out.
I like those subtle themes that keep unabashedly repeating in various ways. Dane’s fast running, Court’s iron grip. That second. These elements, they’re pretty blatant, but at the same time they don’t grate like they would if applied clumsily. Ah, well-executed themes are a joy.

Classifying this… Maybe a mystical, contemporary fantasy with a strong romance and really detailed sex?
On that note, I did not expect the sex to be so excellent. Believably fun and easy and heated and natural and funny. Then again, the whole book is very funny. It made me re-read entire pages over and over, laugh about sentences, exchanges, and never once did it feel as though it was trying too hard, as so often happens with witty books.

Well, I feel really nauseous so I’ll just add the single thing that startled me.

Having a near death experience like Dane Harper does in 'Forever in One Second' by Finn Marlowe definitely gives you a new perspective on life. It reminds us how fragile we are and how we need to appreciate every second of our life as if it were our last, because it might well be. Court is a lonely, tortured soul; he's an ex-hostage suffering from PTSD. He's plagued with anxiety attacks and horrifying dreams, sometimes he has trouble discerning which fears real and which are imagined. As if that weren't enough for anyone to manage, Court has an amazing ability to repair physical injuries. He's overwhelmed by it; he considers himself a freak and his gift a curse. Even though he uses it to help people, he's also seen the dark side of this skill and it terrifies him. He needs someone to take him in hand and help Court regain control of his life and find the redemption and love he deserves.

Dane, ‘the Pain’, as Court affectionately calls him, is something else! He's a take-charge kind of guy who always has a plan, especially in bed. When he wants something, he makes it happen. Even though Dane can be pushy and arrogant, he's also providing Court with a sense of security which is something Court desperately needs. Dane supports Court until he can do so himself; he takes charge until Court can do so himself. Dane is determined to help Court see himself, not as a freak of nature, but as the special, awesome man that he is.

'Forever in One Second' was different than I expected; I thought it would be more about healing and was pleasantly surprised when it turned into a suspenseful story full of angst, adventure, intrigue and passion. In fact, this story has some of the most intense lovemaking sessions that I've ever read. They are sensual and beautifully portrayed as Dane, following one of his famous plans, literally talks us through them which only makes it steamier. There was a lot going on in this story and it wasn't difficult to get lost. The thought did occur to me that perhaps some of that was by design, considering Court was frequently lost, in a state of confusion. It's a good story and I enjoyed it, especially the sex scenes which, honestly, were my favorite part. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a passionate love story with a touch of the supernatural, memorable character reminding us that anything is possible if we, like Dane, just have a plan. Thanks, Finn, for your entertaining, sensual story!

Court saved Dane’s life. As an EMT, Courtenay has seen a lot of suffering and death in his line of work. When he comes across a dying Dane, Court just wants to stop his suffering. Dane’s near miraculous recovery compels him to search out Court and immediately the sparks fly. Dane is determined to get through Court’s many emotional walls but when he does, a threat from Court’s past shows why he had good reason to be nervous.

An interesting and (at least for me) original idea where one of the characters has an unexplained ability where he can heal injuries.
Both Dane and Court were interesting characters and they seemed to work well together with Dane leading and making plans (and some of those plans were Hot) and Court following.

Goddamn.

Dane and Court were sizzling. Seriously. Electricity in every touch. And, holy crap, was Dane the man with the plan. His plans were exquisite. Like an art form. Definitely gives a new meaning to planning for sex. As long as Dane is planning it count me in. I could give this book 5 stars on the sex scenes alone. They were pages upon pages long. Very nice!

Two genres I love. Paranormal and m/m. With a slight sprinkling of mystery, which I also adore.

Star rating this one is hard for me. It was much better than a three star read, but I don't think I quite enjoyed it as much as other books I've rated four stars. Can I rate it 3.75?

Court Woods has to make a split second decision to save a man who he recognises as his former best friend’s (once) annoying, younger brother. They haven’t seen each other in quite a while, but a ray of sun, the beauty of Dane, and Court’s ‘ability’, all draw Court to make the split second decision to save his life.

As Dane recovers from his injuries he remembers his saviour’s eyes, they’re a piercing blue. He tracks him down, as he is thankful and intrigued. Forever in One Second explores the difference a second (time) can make in a person’s life – relationships, love, living life to the full, what could be, what may be lost. It is also about two men who have survived life threatening injuries and loss, but both handle their respective fates in a somewhat different manner.

I loved Dane's positive, never look back, joie de vivre attitude. He was witty and provided some laugh out loud moments. I loved that two strong women had a role in his personality. When there were problems or issues he would often times think of something his mother or grandmother had said to him. You know them, those sayings that become burned in your mind after the 100th relaying from parents/grandparents. Dane is pushy and strong willed, just what the lost soul that is Court needs. My lord, what a mouth – dirty ideas and planned sex just oozed off that tongue like honey dripping from a spoon.

Court is quite lost through most of this book due to PTSD and feeling like a “freak”. He has, at times, paralysing anxiety, zones out, can’t handle crowds, and is therefore isolated, and unsure what constitutes love. He is a “fixer’ and has a great desire to help those who are suffering. I've never been big on dreams in books but there are those that work. This is one of them. Anyone who has been through something as traumatic as Court - a major life event combined with an extended period of forced captivity - has serious dreams releasing information from the subconscious. In Court's case subliminal dream imagery was a major emotional need and guide for him, along with Dane’s strong, grounded optimism and plans, right up to, and including, the very end of the story.

I suppose this book could be deemed as paranormal, and I get that, but for me it was more psychological, incredibly visceral, with an edgy undercurrent. I understand Court's ‘ability’ and, while it was the catalyst for Court and Dane's pairing, I was absorbed by the two men coming together and working through a complex relationship.

The sex scenes were delicious and inventive, and H.O.T. Definitely erotic for both men whilst also being cathartic for Court and electric for Dane.

I loved the beginning of the book, it hooked me in and I adored the ending. If the book started with a bang then it ended with beautiful words that tied the story’s romantic aspect together. So many books either end abruptly or fizzle in a cheesy-easy way.

Why 4 stars and not 5? A couple of things, Kiley, the Aussie fire-starter that was held with Court in Paris, made the book off-kilter with his/their dialogue, and his now-I’m- here-now-I’m-not routine. Dane’s surgeon, I know he felt part of some divine intervention with Dane’s quick recovery, was a bizarre distraction for mine. Mostly, though, the use of exclamation marks killed me. I know that exclamation marks are in vogue right now, but it truly isn’t needed. When the writing is strong you get the emotions, when the writing is lousy...who cares. The writing was strong, so there was no need for the over use of exclamation marks. Obviously in stressful times or to make a strong point yes, but, please, Ms. Marlowe you don’t need to use them that much, your writing is good and I got the feelings just from your words, where the characters were, and what they were experiencing.

Forever in One Second is quite the journey. I couldn’t read it in one sitting, I had to process the characters sometimes. It was a good read with two intense and interesting protagonists who really worked as a couple. I’m glad they found one another. I definitely look forward to reading more from Finn Marlowe.

Excellent book! I was hooked within the first few pages and I didn’t want to put it down!! I understand where some of the other reviewers are coming from with respect to feeling a bit confused due to the dream sequences and feelings of lurking danger; however, I thought these things actually added to the air of mystery and intrigue for me. OMG – Dane and Court were amazing together and perfect for one another, but Dane in particular will be one of those characters that sticks with me. The term “infected with life” completely represents Dane’s personality and outlook on everything. After being given a second chance, he goes all out for what he wants. After all, “what Dane wants, Dane works at getting”, and Dane wants Court. Good thing Court wanted Dane too (even though he didn’t think he deserved him), because there is no denying Dane on a mission! As much as I loved Dane for his spirit and domineering ways, I also loved Court for his humble feelings and doubts. He just needed a combination of gentle coaxing and downright prodding at times in order to come out of his shell – again, Dane to the rescue!

The sex scenes were like fireworks on the 4th of July – a myriad of sparkling colors that exploded before your eyes with each new formation more awesome than the previous; the dialogue and banter between Court and Dane was very funny; the mystery created plenty of angst and hurdles to overcome; there was great use of symbolism and a very realistic feel to the aspect of the story dealing with Court’s PTSD; and among these things – also some very real emotions that brought both laughter and a couple of teary moments. Sounds like the perfect recipe for a fabulous book, doesn’t it?

This was the first book I’ve read by this author (her other one has been sitting on my TBR pile, but not for much longer…) and I’m very impressed. When I read the blurb after this book came out, I knew I had to read it immediately and I’m so glad that I did. Loved it – try it!!!

Really good character development for me.

Dane Harper is dying. Court has 1 second to make a decision to save his life. He has 1 second to make that happen before he gets caught. That decision is going to change his life, but it's a decision he'll never regret.

So, he heals him. Gifted with the ability to 'wish' people better, he gives Dane a second chance at life. When Dane heals, he's grateful that Court was able to save him but more than that he wants Court. And what Dane wants, Dane gets. Unfortunately for Dane, he didn't realize how messed up Court was or how many dangerous people want Court for his ability and they aren't afraid to resort to extreme measures to get him. This starts them on a roller coaster of a relationship that both Dane and Court want but Court believes he doesn't deserve.

I have to say I absolutely adored Dane and Court. Dane is so full of life. He's exuberant, abrasive, and quite a handful. Court is just the opposite. He's quiet, extremely broken and feels like he should have died during of a fairly recent event. It may not seem like it but Dane heals Court by being his forceful and blunt self. The two together are both hot and funny. Dane has a knack for making all these elaborate plans that Court hates sticking with but when Court makes the plans, they always turn out horribly. One of the things I really loved about them, though, is their references to when they were younger and the nicknames they had for each other then. It was just so cute.

I found the plot of the story rather interesting. The fact that Court can heal people by 'wishing' it better was both adorable and fascinating. And I liked the direction that the story went into. First we see the connection between Dane and Court and how intense it is. Then we get to see Dane and Court sticking together when knowledge of Court's ability gets to some rich people. And I really enjoyed the fact that we saw the story escalate to encompass and explain some of Court's past and the horrible experience he went through.

While I loved the story and the characters, there were a few things I had a problem with. For one, while the sex was very hot (Court and Dane are freaking smokin') there was way to much sex and was way too long. At least for my tastes. On top of that, I was confused a bit in the beginning because there were these dreams, while very important to the story later on, were rather confusing when you read them. However, the dreams are both horrendous AND sweet so I didn't much mind them.

All in all, I adored this story. It was both sweet and intense. I loved Dane and Court and what they have to go through. I'm very interested in whether we'll get to see more of them. Hopefully when we get more of Kiley and Markus! Definitely recommended. (less)

Delightful paranormal m/m with good characters and fast-moving, interesting plot. A man has the gift of fixing injuries; this earns him both the love of a childhood frenemy, and the attention of several, more powerful people who don't necessarily mean him well.

I couldn't get into this book. The basic idea was great, added a nice supernatural element to the story. It started off alright too with a gripping action scene involving a twister. I liked the main characters, Dane so cheeky and pushy, Court deeply flawed and insincere, and some of the minor characters were interesting, too. But about 30% in, the story started to drag. Forever in One Second was magical, truly magical. I am a very very very content reader. :-)

The story starts by grabbing you with an explosive opening sequence, introducing Dane, Courtnay and the gift. Then a love story, so you know they are cemented together: their relationship solid and their love started and growing. And damn, the sex exquisite. They are both still caught up in past trauma, Dane his slow recovery from the twister, and Court his months of imprisonment and torture as a hostage by a radical Islamic group. Dane is extroverted and stubborn, a good foil to Court's reluctance and insecurity. The sex scenes are hot. Dane is very domineering in bed and he's not above using sex as a tool to keep Court by his side.

I felt that the book was a little repetitive in places. For example in one scene between Court and a kidnapper, we get the story of a certain Dr. Perrault's witnessing of Court's power. That witness account is then repeated almost verbatim by the kidnapper as he converses with Court. Dane is a real dirty talker in bed (which I love) so he tells Court in a lot of detail exactly step by step what he's going to do to him, but then that same sex scene is described step by step. Things like this made me skim a bit when I was reading. Although the plot premise is very interesting, I did have some moments where it seemed a bit far-fetched.

My reservations aside, it's an entertaing book which many m/m readers will enjoy, particularly those who like the hurt/comfort theme.(less)

I loved the premise of this book, however felt it was a little cliche at times and could have done with less sex in the first half. The sex itself was well written and hot; it just got a bit boring after the nth time.

The plot was fairly solid, though there were a couple of times during the point-of-view/time changes that I had to pause a moment and work out where I was. Would liked to have learned more about where Court's powers came from also.

This book was okay, definitely an interesting premise, but it didn't keep me engaged. I really didn't like Dane, the whole "force of nature" thing justifying him riding roughshod over Court was a bit too much for me. And neither MC really grew much during the course of the book, Court was pushing past some of his issues, but I didn't feel like he overcame them.

It took me a while to finish this book, mostly because it didn't hold my attention. I liked both Dane as well as Court, (loved Dane, in fact) but after the first sex scene the magic was sort of gone for me, and the whole mystery thing wasn't appealing to me even at the beginning. With the dreams breaking into the story and all different points of view - although important - I felt distanced early on, and the feeling never just went away.

2.5 stars. - Even though I normally am a big fan of paranormal romance stories, especially ones with action and suspense, I could not get into this book. I really enjoyed Forever In One Second. This is an unusual combination of contemporary and paranormal romance with not a vampire, werewolf, fairy or demon in sight. The characters are simply adorable. I loved them both and wanted to kick them in the liver in almost equal parts, which makes it for a crazy ride. Court is so scarred by his power and his past experiences that keeps self-sabotaging his happinesses, being totally unfair with himself and taking an enormous burden, until Dane makes his way into Court's defences, bringing light and hope to his life. Their relationship is a constant struggle between them, a lot of pulling and pushing involved, Court constantly trying to run, Dane not letting him (angry sex is so hot). And Court's power it's so fitting, he wishes to fix people, he wants to fix them all even if he endangers himself in doing so.

I keep getting this ~~retarded~~ silly vibe that Dane and Court were an alternate universe version of Killian and Colton from A Thread of Deepest Black, and that only made me enjoy the book so much more (though I'm not sure if that's really a compliment for the author, but really, I couldn't help it.

I'm such a sucker for strong ladies in m/m and Catherine, Dane's mom, was a such a fun read, a polished version of her blunt son in her mischief and ~~scheming~~ plotting. In my endless love for the secondary characters, she and Markus are way on top. I'm only slightly disappointed that Kiley had such a minuscule appearance. (view spoiler)

The humour totally won me over. Court and Dane, both together and separately, are ridiculously funny, some of their clever remarks are memorable. And even between the humour, my heart was bleeding for them, the ending it's really, really touching and it made me tear up a little bit. Can we get more books from the author? like soon?(less)
