Olivia's mother has died and she is waiting for her in the form of an urn. It has to be mailed because her father and her moved to another town leaving her Grandma and Grandpa who think her father is very immature (which he is) behind. But it's only temporary. She doesn't need any friends especially not Sasha the boy everyone makes fun of or needs to worry about Milena and her friends teasing her or her not being able to live in a boat in the backyard of her dad's barbershop. It's only temporary...more

What a beautiful, sad, touching story.
10 year old Olivia has just moved to a new town with her father after the death of her beloved mother. Her father cries almost constantly, Olivia has not been able to cry since the death. They've moved to this new town "temporarily," just until the funeral home delivers her mother's ashes and they can decide what to do next.
It seems like such a simple story - but everyone in Olivia's world is hiding secrets. "Bluffing," as her mother used to say - not only...more

My original review was posted at: http://www.booksbiscuitsandtea.com/20...

If you've been following my blog and my reviews for a while then you might know that I really enjoy middle grade and young adult novels dealing with loss and recovery. I don't know why - I guess I just like emotional stories in general. This is how I stumbled upon My Name is Olivia...and I Can't Do Anything About It and that is why I was so eager to start reading it. I had a feeling that Jowi Schmitz's novel was going to b...more

Olivia has lost her mom, and she and her father have moved to a new town. Olivia's father, who's always been somewhat immature, has a hard time dealing with the loss. They currently live in a boat in the backyard of the barber shop her father works in.
The book is set in the Netherlands, which makes in a bit more interesting. Olivia tries to deal with the changes in her life--sometimes successfully(enrolling in school); sometimes not so successfully(never washing her hair).
All in all this is an e...more

Get out the tissues before starting to read this book. It is told from the viewpoint of a ten year old little girl who has lost her mother. She is living with her VERY immature father who can't face his wife's death and is seeking to escape memories by taking Olivia with him to live on a boat on dry land. Life is described in very simple terms, but, for the reader, life seems very hard for this little girl.

I think the book is intended for children but I would never recommend it to a young child....more

Cute story of a girl learning to cope with life after the death of her mom.

Olivia has just lost her mother to cancer. Her father decides that they must get away and off they sail to a new city where he has rented a barber shop. While living in a sailboat on land Olivia must deal with the loss of her mother, her grieving father and tween angst.

I felt that the writing and the story progression was very choppy. There are better stories with a similar storyline that I would recommend over this one.

This review is based on galley copy.

Olivia is grieving for her mother. This book was very difficult for me to read, but I couldn't put it down. The writing is compelling and Olivia felt like a real person. Heart breaking and lovely.
