On his way home from school, Kipling rush falls through some broken boards and lands on the strange boy Chemuel, whom he calls Crash for obvious reasons and their lives together begin.

What's not so obvious is who Chemuel is, why he's down there, or what lies ahead for them in this short story about the transformative power of selfless love.

A stunning and beautiful tale of trust and acceptance. It's unique and so touching, in fact it was one of the most romantic love stories I have ever read. An exceptional and vividly told fantasy I really loved it. Thanks for the rec, Vlad I would have missed this gem if it wasn't for your review. Recommended.

If I were to pick a story to be read to me before I sleep at night, this would be it. Finding this story and reading it was such an amazing experience that I feel as if expressing it in words would ruin the moment.

It tells the story of a love seemingly formed within eternity itself by an eternal being, Chemuel and a mortal man, Kipling. Though the title states the obvious, it didn't preach nor did it judge. It simply gave me the message that love just "is." There wasn't much narration. Just tho...more

If you’ve read the special project Wishing on a Blue Star, then this story is going to be familiar to you, as it is Z.A. Maxfield’s outstanding contribution to that anthology. But whether you have read the entire anthology or not, do yourself a favor and take the time to read When Angels Fall, even if it’s for a second or more times, because it is absolutely indicative of everything that can go so very right in a short story.

From the characterization to the theme of a divine and perfect love, Z....more

Did I regret? How could I? Regret seems to me as useless and foolish an invention as any that humans have ever conceived. Only those things we do and the choices we make exist. You were my choice, and I make it over again with every breath I take.

How THE HECK did I miss this one??! I need to hold someone accountable ...

I have only read few of Z.A. Maxfield's stories before. It ranges from 3 - 4 stars; I guess that means they're good enough but I have never been truly blown away, until t...more

I just reviewed an 80 page novella length book and criticized the lack of development and the poor execution of a storyline that had a lot of potential. Here we have a short story that is less than half the length of the novella I just reviewed and I do not have the same complaints. That proves that it's not necessarily the length, but the overall content that matters the most. This short story had all the plot and character development needed in a concentrated little package.

I'm not spoiling a...more

Solid Maxfield, adorable characterisation, simple plot with neat twist. While nothing special it is undeniably worth a read.

Characterisation:

Up to the typically high standards laid out by Maxfield. The bitter-sweet nature of (the brilliantly named) Kipling 'Kip' hints to the tough challenges young gay teens face. (Having been there myself, I enjoy the way Maxfield is able to refer without being coarse or blatant at LGBT identity struggles). And Crash? Well he is just adorable.

Wonderful short story about a love that transcends humanity when an ancient angel discovers his one true love and sacrifices his wings to remain earthbound with his love. The story had a perfect arc, well-written beginning to end. Loved the portrayal of both lead men - Kip, as the modern day, flawed human, with his amazing wit and insecurities and Crash (aka Chemuel), with his unassuming beauty and odd demeanor stemming from his innate innocence and goodness. I loved how ZAM developed their rela...more

I was expecting- and hoping- for something light to read. And I didn't get that, but maybe I got something much much more.

I don't know what to say about this. That it was beautiful?

For something so short, it held so much weight. I don't know how something that -when you actually look at the story- is so happy, could feel so sad.

But the thing is, it wasn't sad. It just made me feel sad. Doesn't make sense, right?

It was a powerful and poignant story about the immense love of an angel who saw no o...more

This was amazing!

Kip was a sweet young boy, brave, funny and charming on first meeting Crash. Then an emotional teenager exploring his sexuality and discovering that his most secret fantasy came true despite his fears of it ruining his friendship. And finally, the last part of their journey, trusting and loving Crash.

It was so beautifully written. I only now understand the significance of Crash's real name. And it matches his existence so perfectly and his feelings for Kip.

Very touching story!

I really needed this after some of the stuff I have been reading lately.

Such a heartwarming story that spans many years. So much said in only a few pages. Kip and Crash are perfect. Their story is perfect. I admit to reading the ending twice to make sure I got it. I only wish we readers could see what happens next.

I love the author and have read many of her books. But I must say that this is now my favorite.

Summer Ellis recommended this book to me, today. I zipped over to smashwords and downloaded and read it immediately.

EVERYONE needs a Crash. :)

This was lovely, heartwarming, charming and innocent.

Wonderfully wrote, wonderful characters, for being a short this was exactly the length it needed to be.

Lovely.

When Angels Fall is a tight, gorgeous story about angels, sacrafice, love, knowing and finding your soul mate. While this was short story, many of the images will stay with me for a long time to come. The stunning imagery of the final scene was thought-provoking and reassuring.

This short story packs quite a punch in a very good way. After reading it I felt like I just finished a full book...I think what was implied and left to the readers imagination was what gave me that sensation,it made me think !Beautiful 4.5 stars.

Truly beautiful. Amazing how so much can be said in so few pages. Really kind of breathtaking. This is such a wonderful short story about true love and friendship and the ultimate sacrifice. Kind of makes my heart ache a little bit.

This was a short story about best friends who become lovers. The catch is that one of the guys is really an angel who has come to earth to be with the other forever. The ending has a nice twist and overall it was a sweet read. I enjoy Z.A. Maxfield's books.

This was simply awesome. Sadly, so short. I want more. I want an explanation for the ending, I'm not sure if I understood it right... but it was really really good.

Thanks Ravyn. Beautiful story and very well written. Amazingly free since it's better than a lot of the short stories I've paid for lately. Definitely recommended.

Very short read, but well worth the effort. Good little story, very sweet. The sexy stuff was very good, but I always like what Z.A. Maxfield writes on that level.
Christine
Short sweet about pure love and the things we will do to make the one we love happy with the hopes of seeing how much we care for them.

For me, this story was confusing, weird, different and very, very lovely. It that makes sense.

Jeez, ZAM... More than one weepy moment in here. Chemuel's thoughts were beautiful.

This story was just beautiful! I loved how it spanned so many years, and I loved the characters and the ending was just so...good! I don't want to give anything away, so I will just say this - go read this!
