This is an atmospheric, melancholy story about a teen boy visiting Scotland with his father. His brother has recently died, the family is crumbling, and he's started hearing voices - vivid conversations - and seeing scenes that he finds engrossing and peaceful. He's at loose ends in Scotland, wandering the countryside and befriending the local bookseller and the couple who run the castle-turned-hotel where he and his father are staying.

The story seems to fit into that type that I read a lot of

The author has a talent for storytelling and she successfully creates a delicate, melancholy mood as well as a sense of the uncanny, but the different storylines didn't seem to mesh very well and some of them were kind of left hanging unresolved at the end of the book--which was a shame!

Eleanor Frances Butler Cameron (1912 - 1996) was a Canadian children's author who spent most of her life in California. She is best known for her Mushroom Planet series and Julia Redfern series.
