R.L. Mathewson (Goodreads Author)
Josephine (Joe for short) and Eric, the EMT crew of Echo 17 have been best friends since they were eight years old. They've been through a lot together over the years, but nothing like what they're about to experience.

Sudden Response by R. L. Mathewson was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to read something funny, light, fluffy and something that made me feel all sweet and giddy.

In Sudden Response, Mathewson tells the story of EMTs and best friends, Eric and Joe (aka - Josephine). The pair have known each other since the age of eight following an incident where Eric shoved worms down Joe's dress and she returned the favour by making him eat the worms. That was the beginning of their friendship. They've...more

Thirty year-old Eric Parish loves working as an EMT. And not just because it's the best job he's ever had, but because his EMT partner is also his best friend, Joe. They've known each other for twenty-two years, through all the high and lows and ups and downs of life. But when Joe gets hurt during a call-out Eric decides that keeping Joe safe is more important than keeping her close.
This is a light, cute, fun read. Nothing deep or profound here. Author R.L. Mathewson has an easy writing...more
I am so happy to have discovered this Author!
I've only read three of her books so far, and I gotta tell ya, her humor is fantastic, and I can't get enough of her characters.
Joe & Eric are wonderful characters. They've been best friends since they were 8 years old. They met the first day Joe started at her new school when Eric shoved worms down Joe's dress, and Joe then proceeded to make Eric eat thus previously mentioned worms...they then proceeded to beat the crap out of each other.

This is my third book by the author and they just keep getting better and better.
I really do love friends to lovers stories. There is such a rich history between Eric and Joe that you instantly feel the connection between them. I also loved learning of the history of how Eric & Joe became friends and how his family unofficially adopted her.

Another enjoyable RLM book.

It was too cute that Eric and Joe (short for Josephine) who have been best friends since they were eight years old never realised that they actually were in love with each other all this while. They just assumed that the mutual cannot-live-without-you feelings were common between best friends.
But I must admit that their 'friendship' did kinda creep me out a little. I would not have been very touchy feely, snuggled, cuddled or sat on my guy bestfriend's lap (the way t...more

Another HIT by R.L. Mathewson. Sudden Response is a sweet, funny and steamy romance about two best friends discovering their love for each other. I loved going on this journey with Jo and Eric. They had to figure out how to switch from being best friends to being friends in love and it was a lot of fun reading about them. I also loved Eric's family. His brother is a blast and I'm hoping he'll get his own story.

This was another good book by this author and the best part it had a hero/heroine who knew each other very well and were best friends and there for each other whenever it counted and even EMT's. Yes, it took them a while for their friendship to turn into more but the feelings were always there but fear to change things stopped them. As always it has characters who are funny and not afraid to voice what they feel. The hero is over-protective and the heroine is not some weak lily who stands by it....more
(July) 4.5* Things you are almost guaranteed to find in an R. L. Mathewson book:
1. Some sort of cake or cupcake with peanut butter frosting (which I don’t know that I’ve ever seen - homemade or in a store/restaurant, so it always stands out to me).
2. Someone buying/eating a coffee roll. Now, I have never heard of a coffee roll. I have no idea what a coffee roll is. I assumed it was literally a bread-type roll that for some reason you would eat w/your coffee (I had a 4th grade teacher who used to...more

I have read previous books by R.L. Mathewson and really enjoyed it so decided to read the EMS Series to add to my list.
Sudden Response is about Joe (Josephine) and her best friend Eric who have been best friends since childhood. Joe and Eric are paramedics and work for the same fire station. They do everything together and come in two. Whatever Joe does so does Eric.
After an intense scene at a call the Eric and Joe were called to, Eric suddenly...more

Aaaahhhhh, I love friends-to-lovers stories, and I really loved this book!! It was funny and romantic, and has left me feeling all swoony and ridiculous with a stupid grin plastered across my face.
Josephine (Joe) and Eric have been best friends since they were 8. They are completely in each other’s lives, and even work together as EMTs. I just finished this one and once again, R.L. Mathewson won my heart over.
Well I didn't liked it as much as the Neighbors from Hell serie, but Eric and Joe were also very funny in their banter and teasing habits as were the different characters for the NFH serie.
I really liked the univers of this story and the EMS atmosphere. It was very interesting to be immersed into this univers and to witness how it works and the different jobs that there are in this line of work.

I decided after re-reading the Neighbor from Hell series for the 6th time that it was time to read more from R. L. Mathewson. It's about Joe (Josephine) and Eric, two EMTs that have been best friends since they were eight years old. There was always a connection between these two that made them inseparable. Literally! (They even lost their virginity next to each other with other people!) Anyways, they both have deeper feeling towards each other but neither one of them wants to ruin their already...more
Fresh from my love affair with R.L. Mathewson's Neighbor from hell series, i have to admit i was disappointed. It did have author's trademark of laughs and fun and some steamy interaction between Eric and Joe. But what couldnt save this book and my attention is that it wallowed too long of them being close buddies since 8yrs old and how they were inseparable but maintained as friends. It's contradicting that they are both attracted to each other but maintained a friendship that was touchy, feely...more
After reading a good four or five of R.L. Mathewson's books I've come to the conclusion that the only way I'd ever accept a marriage proposal would be if she scripted it. Once again another ridiculously cute book with brilliant humour that leaves a massive grin on my face.
I think out of all her books 'Playing for Keeps' is still my favourite with this coming a close second.
I did get frustrated at Joe and Eric while they were both reluctant to be with each other for pretty much the same reason an

I loved everything about this book. I know I say that about all of Mathewson's books but I REALLY LOVED this one. This author has very quickly become one of my favorites!!! It had me laughing from page one and I immediately fell in love with Eric and Joe as well as Nathan and Alice. (I hope Nathan gets his own book!!) The story was lovely, sweet, funny and "yummy". It's about two childhood friends who have done everything together, experienced milestones together and who love each other. The tra...more
Ok, so here's my review.
I was wondering what rating to give this book; I pondered and pondered, really giving my brain a workout.. my mind was going crazy!
Then I thought, well, I'll give it a 4 star rating because it's not long enough and I want to read more about Joe and Eric, but then I realized how stupid that was. Not stupid because I don't want to read more about them because I do, but because you can't give a book a low rating because it's short. That doesn't make any sense. Well, I guess...more

Some one who loves internal dialogue and lots of details
I cannot finish...yeah I know I am on page 143, but I just cannot do it!!!
I don't care if Joe (girl) and Eric end up together; in fact I don’t care about them at all because I am bored stiff reading their every inner thought over, and over, and over, and over. Okay so you get the idea.
This book didn't work for me at all, which is disappointing because the concept, friends to lovers, is one that usually a favorite of mine. IMO the story gets bogged down in the inane details. Sorry but I just don'...more

It's been a few days so I've forgotten most of the many small things that annoyed me about this. The main flaw I can recall is the total illogic of the hero thinking the heroine unfit for her career after they've both been at it 12 years. If that's what he thought of female EMTs in the first place, how has their friendship survived? I didn't notice anything that would indicate why he should have a "sudden" change of heart about it. Like Mathewson's other work this novel suffers a great deal of u...more

My third book by this author. While I liked it, I liked it less than the NFH series.
This is a friends-to-lovers book, a trope I enjoy. The protags are interesting; their back story is sweet. I didn't get to "know" the characters as well in this book as the other two I have read by this author it seemed.
I do get tired of all the characters calling each other "bastard," "rat bastard," and "gold digger." Maybe it is a cultural thing, but in the South you don't use those terms with your loved ones....more

Really enjoyed this book and don’t know why I waited so long to read it… Very cute, very loving, and very hot!! Of course you know where this book is heading right away… but I was glad to take that journey with them… It was nice to see this history Eric and Joe had… knowing each other since grade school… now that’s super cool!!! I love this author and of course the book was great too. Joe (Josephine) and Eric knew each other since they were 8 years old and have been through it all. I guess he always protected her and was a good brother to her. They were not actual siblings but her Mom, was a carefree woman and gladly handed Joe over to Alice Nathan and Eric's Mother and she lived with them from the age of 14 on. After years they had been best friends and partners being both EMT's Eric told Joe there was something betwee...more
Eh. I though he was a douchebag and she was a doormat. Not sure why I finished.
I really liked this. THis author writes some good, sweet stories. They aren't angtsy and super emotional or super deep, but the characters are likable and stories and sweet, funny and enjoyable. There was a little repetition in this story when each character was caught up in their inner dialogue and that was a little like...bla, but there were some laugh out loud moments and as usual with these stories, you feel the sexual tension, there are some steamy scenes and you are rooting for the charact...more

I love this story so much it hurts! Not the best from Miss Mathewson, but it's enough to make me blushed. :)

I seriously love this author. I don't think she could ever write anything that I hate. I absolutely LOVE her female characters. They're always so bad ass and they don't take crap from anybody, and that describes Joe to a T. I loved her relationship with Eric. I've read other stories where people have known each other for a long time and then as soon as the book starts they get together with absolutely no explanation for why they didn't like each other before or why they didn't just get together...more

“That better not be what I think it is," Joe mumbled in the dark.
It was. "It's not. Jeez, woman, someone's paranoid. It's my pocket light," he said, wincing. Ah, he was only human after all. It wasn't the first time she got him hard nor would it be the last time. The physical discomfort was a small price to pay to have her in his arms.
"Well, then your flashlight is growing. Jeez, Eric, put a leash on that thing before it stabs me!" she teased.
"But it likes you," he pouted.
She giggled. "I seem to remember a certain tenth grade math class where it liked standing up in front of the entire class."
He sucked in a breath. "Hey, that traumatized me!”
