In this stunning graphic novel adaptation of Robert Lepage and Marie Michaud’s play of the same name, East meets West, the personal meets the political, and old meets new. Claire, a Quebecoise art dealer, arrives in China to adopt a little girl. There she visits Pierre, her ex-husband, who after fifteen years in China has been absorbed into a life of bicycles, tea, and cal...more

This oversized graphic novel (a little outside my usual genre) was recommended by Buried in Print, where you’ll find a longer review and explanation of the work. Written by Robert Lepage and Marie Michaud, illustrated by Fred Jourdain and translated from the Mandarin by Min Sun, The Blue Dragon is set in Shanghai and centres on a Canadian from Montreal who has come to China to adopt a baby girl.

I kept returning to the artwork over and over, and it has three alternatives for an ending – you choos...more

Even though I wasn't a big fan of the way the characters were drawn in this book, there are some very striking images in this graphic novel. Full pages where you're just smacked in the face by some wonder inky brush work.

The story, on the other hand, feels a little half baked to me. I do think the characters in The Blue Dragon are defined well enough, but the plot feels like it skips over some scenes (outside of the time jump). What I did like about this story was that the characters are all a...more

This was absolutely beautiful. It's set in China, and tells a story about three people- a Quebecois gallery owner, a woman from his past, Claire, who visits him and a young female artist named Xiao Ling.

I don't want to give away the story, because it's one of those graphic novels where it's nice not to know anything about the plot. The story involves both Chinese and Quebecois elements, which I loved. The art is absolutely beautiful and there are elements of Chinese calligraphy and such. No Orie...more

An absolutely gorgeous graphic novel that tells the story of a Canadian gallery owner living in China, an old girfriend from his past and his current girlfriend, a young but talented Chinese artist. Their lives intersect in some very interesting and emotionally powerful ways.

The art is breath-taking and makes wonderful use of the form. Chinese script is a major theme in the book and it's developed fully and beautifully. I only hesitate to give this five stars because it does end with an ending...more

This graphic novelization of the popular play is more a work of art than a simple literary piece. The story is an interesting tale of baby adoption and Chinese culture. A tale about personal journey as well as national fidelity.

Though the story is complex, Lepage and Michaud chose a minimalist approach to the wording of this narrative and, appropriately so. This approach not only meaningfully distilled the story, but let Jourdain’s art play an integral part in sharing the story with the reader....more

Really enjoyed this graphic novel by a theatre director and a visual artist. Very strong graphics to go with a pretty simple story line which played out quite dramatically. A lot of innovative stuff showing tiny heads to indicate dialogue in a conversation, as well as showing people talking in Chinese with the translation into English playing out below. Really riveting stuff - great emotion, great characters and puzzling ending. Highly recommend it to fans of the medium.

An illustrated story more than a graphic novel. The illustrations are nice and the story good, worth reading and makes me want to see the play (even more).
Alex
Stunning artwork, boring plot, uninteresting characters.
