The Story of Christmas
Pamela Dalton's exquisite, intricate scissor-cut illustrations wonderfully illuminate The Story of Christmas. Deeply reverent, richly detailed, and teeming with life, Dalton's images follow the story of the Nativity from the appearance of the Angel, to the shepherds who came from the fields, and to the three wise men who followed the star to pay respect for their new king....more

I liked that the older version of the King James Bible was used as it went along with Pamela Dalton's gorgeous paper-cut illustrations. The technique called "Scherenschnitte," is according to the inside front dust jacket: "rooted in Pennsylvania-German folk art and steeped in an intimate appreciation of medieval and Renaissance Italian art." It makes it look like a medieval manuscript, very detailed and just gorgeous. It really brings out the beautiful humbleness of the birth of Jesus (I hope th...more
Told through the eyes and hands of the talented illustrator Pamela Dalton, the story of the birth of Jesus Christ comes to life in the pages of this gorgeous picture book.
Pamela Dalton’s illustrated telling of The Story of Christmas is what I would consider a rare find. This is a story that is the crux of most Christian beliefs yet finding a version of the story that is appealing to both children and adults can be a daunting task. Often picture book versions of the story are much more cartoon in...more

With text directly from The King James Bible, this lovely book with its scissor-cut illustrations (some of which remind me of Hans Christian Andersen's artwork) tells the Christmas story with elegance. There is also much to look at on each page, making this a perfect choice for reading to the family on Christmas Eve.

Big Kid Reaction: This is a beautifully illustrated book and I love how it begins with the angel Gabriel visiting Mary, not just the last "leg" of her and Joseph's trip to the Inn. I could not help but think that this is more for collectors than children, though.
Pros: Beautifully detailed illustrations make this a wonderful read-aloud choice for Advent.
Cons: The quality of the book is such that you want to take extra special care of it ... it may appeal more to adult collectors and Sunday school...more

Folkloric and charming. I particularly liked the spread with the baby Jesus, which shows him centered dramatically in a glowing hay manger floating in a black background.
Dalton's elegant cut-paper illustrations adorn a black background in this illustrated Christmas story that uses the text of the King James Bible. The intricate detail in the trees and ferns, angel wings, and finery of the wise men fascinate me with their fragile grace. I consider this another fine addition to my collection of nativity stories.
