Three signs that something is very different with your mew man:

1. He sleeps all day...which would be annoying except he's so attentive at night.

2. He's attacked by sword-wielding assailants, yet insists he can handle it on his own.

3. He never seems to age.

Heather Westfield has always lived a quiet life, but that all chang...more

I would give 2.5 stars to this book because it was the one I enjoyed the least in the series.

I don't get it though, Heather and Jean-Luc were great, one of my favorites couples in the series. He was hot and Heather had this great personality, so different from the rest of the heroines; at the beginning I thought this would become my fave. But then I got a bit bored at the middle. But well, the ending was amazing.

The problem, IMHO, was that the relationship took forever to ...more

If I could give 3 1/2 stars I would. The book itself was pretty good. I remember Jean-Luc as a minor character in an earlier novel in this series, and it was interesting to give the fashion designer his own story. That said, I felt that Sparks didn't quite rise to the challenge in this one.

For the most part the story was good, though it seems to be part of a trend I've noticed lately. Lots of sexual tension with little payoff. This may sound odd, but when I'm reading a romance ...more

I enjoyed the story of Jean Luc and Heather... and of course i liked that they had so much involvement with previous characters, it wasn’t just an all new cast and Jean Luc.

My only negative comment would be with how they handled the Phineas character, it was worse in the previous book. But it’s like every time they addressed his character it was "the black guy". They refer to everyone else with other characteristics... but with him it’s like "a black guy"

Another Fun Vamp Romance From Sparks

The fourth book in the Love at Stake series features the parisian designer, Jean-Luc Echarpe - a lonely vamp envious of the warm and loving relationships of his friends and facing a twenty-five year exile to quiet the media's growing rumblings over his lack of aging. He's got a big plan, but best laid plans of vamps and men oft go awry. Jean-Luc's plans go awry quickly and thoroughly when he stumbles across first Heather, a teacher and...more

So, a definite note of K.Sparks: the titles of her books don't reflect ANYTHING on what the book is about. Not saying that's a bad thing ... but if you forget the title and have to guess, there's nothing in the book itself that will hint to what the title is.

In saying that, this is the story of Jean-Luc and Heather. In the other novels [1-3:], I thought Jean-Luc was an interesting side-character but as a prime chara I wasn't so sure. Thankfully, I was proved wrong. Sparks made him un...more

Another great book by Kerrelyn Sparks. She reminds me of a combination between Sherrilyn Kenyon and Kresley Cole. Funny and heartfelt, Spark's books grab you and take you for a ride.

Hee-zair (Heather) has been dealt a lot of rough cards: an ex-husband from hell, a controlling mother, and an unfullfilling career as a teacher. But that all changes when she follows her childhood friend, Sasha, to a fashion boutique's grand openning.

Fashion in backwoods (or praire) Texas? W...more

If you're looking for an easy read that will make you laugh and sigh, Love at Stake is a great series for you. The fourth installment in Kerrelyn Sparks's series is about Jean-Luc Echarpe, French fashion designer of the undead, and Heather Westfield, human history teacher in a small town in Texas.

Jean-Luc has been in the spotlight in the human world for years, as a renowned fashion designer, and people are starting to question how is it he is not aging. To solve the problem, he has t...more

This one was...enticing. It took me a little bit to like Jean Luc, my version of a french guy, made him sound gay, and it didn't help that he is a fashion designer. But by the end, I could see his appeal. Since I'm in a similar situation as Heather, it soured the reading a bit. But the cockroach stuff was too funny! And totally made the book. The final battle scene was perfect! I think my all time favorite of five books I have read. (Not my favorite book, but my favorite battle scene for...more

The Undead Next Door is the fourth installment the Love At Stake series by Kerrelyn Sparks. I recently picked up a copy of The Undead Next Door and The Secret Life of a Vampire, and loved both. If your a fan of Lynsay Sands, than this is the next series for you. It's mostly based on vampires finding their true love, and always having a difficult time wooing their girl/guy.
The Love At Stake series always guarantees a good laugh and a hot, light read.

I was looking forward to this entry in the Love at Stake series because I liked Jean-Luc, but I was really disappointed in his love interest. In some ways, Heather is very realistic compared to some of the romance heroines out there and I appreciate that, but there were times when I wanted to punch her for being ridiculous. (view spoiler)[For example, she comes to the conclusion that he's not normal very early on (because you can find (and believe) anything on the internet)and then comes to the ...more

OK... hmmm. It was good until the middle, then it got... "Oh no you're dead. I can't love you. You're a monster"... well... since Twilight came out, who thinks that any more, and geez! Every one of these books so far has a lame girl who goes from totally smitten to "get away from me" because of glowing eyes or fang flash for 3 chapters to all of a sudden IN LOOOOOVEE in 2 seconds because of some "thing" they did... I may start lowering my stars if it becomes the sam...more

This book didn't hold me completely enthralled as some of the previous books in the 'Love at Stake' series did, but it still wasn't bad at all. Ms. Sparks has a very definitive writing style; she has a humor and wit about her writing and characters I haven't quite seen anywhere else.

I hadn't even been thinking about reading Jean-Luc's story until I actually got to this book. He took me by surprise though, I quickly fell in love with him just as I have with all the other awesome male pr...more

Just finished this book 4 of the Love at Stake series. This book is about Jean Luc and Heather. The book starts out with Heather drawing her own alterations on some of Jean Luc's designs at a fashion show. She is not a skinny model type and she wanted to design dresses and other clothing to fit the "normal" size woman. She is confronted by Jean Luc and instantly he is smitten with her. He asks her to work for him. The only problem here is that whoever Jean Luc dates, gets killed by...more

I'm so glad that I stuck with this series. The first book was good and all, but it was kind of flat and old-fashioned. It felt more like a Harlequin novel than a PNR novel. The stories seem to get better and better with each new book, though.
This one is tied with Angus' story for my favorite so far. I like Jean-Luc, but all of the fashion talk got old pretty quickly. It's hard to make a fashion designer seem like a big old alpha manly man vampire. Sparks did a much better job than I w...more

The Undead Next Door is the story between Jean-Luc and Heather. Heather is a teacher and single mother in a small Texas town. She has always dreamed of more from her life. Jean-Luc the Europe Coven Master has relized that he needs to go into exile because the public is starting to wonder about him so he opens a shop in Texas. He has been afraid of relatiships for a long time because of his enemy Lui who insist on making Jean-Luc suffer by killing the women that he loves. You also find out s...more

I chose this one from the six or seven Kerrelyn Sparks books I found in my local bookstore, because it seemed the least cheesy. The titles of the other books only made me want to run away screaming.

But this one seemed ok. And it was. It was exactly the book I expected it to be. A nice read, but nothing really good or awful about it. Kind of like the Vegas Vampires books.

This is a romance novel with a twist of Vampire versus human drama. Heather has lived all her life in a sleepy town. Suddenly the town is abuzz with the opening of a new designer store by the infamous Jean-Luc. During the opening, while Heather is copying the designs and then altering it to suit her full figure, Jean-Luc spies on her from above, through a two-way mirror. The sight of someone stealing his designs angers him and Jean runs off to catch the thief. Oh, did I forget to mention, Jean i...more

How can one not love a lonely French fashion designer vampire who is straight and thinks size 12 girls are the cats meow? Jean-Luc was everything I had hoped he would be from his introduction in previous books. Sauve, sophisticated with old fashioned charm. A beautifully written character. His love interest is Heather, a bit timid but trying not to be, history teacher from who knows where Texas. Ok she too is a budding fashion designer. Not one of my favorite heroines in the series I have to ...more

This is a really horrible review, but so much happened it was hard to include everything and make it all flow. This one definitely ranks high in my mind, however I'm starting to see a similarity in plots.

With the opening of Jean-Luc Echape’s newest fashion store should bring him great joy, but instead the knowledge of the store closing in two weeks, thus starting his 25 year exile only depresses him. With much of France’s paparazzi noticing he’s not aging, his only option is to hide o...more

Book 4 in the Love at Stake series.
We met Jean-Luc in the previous book.
This couple have been my favourites so far alongside Angus and Emma. I will say that the storyline that concerns Casamir was a little lacking but the sole focus was on Jean-Luc and Heather. Heather is my favourite Heroine to date, just above Emma.
There was a storyline that came with Jean. An old enemy 'Lui' has been following him for centuries killing off his girlfriends because Jean stopped him from...more

Another fun vampire novel by Kerrelyn Sparks. I love her vampires, first there was Roman & Shanna, then Angus & Emma and now Jean Luc. These 3 vampires have been friends for over 500 years. In this book Jean Luc follows the others into matrimony.

Book 4 in the Love at Stake vampire series. This story revolves around the vampire Jean-Luc Echarpe (coven master of Western Europe and world renowned fashion designer) and the mortal he falls in love with, Heather Westfield. Jean-Luc moves to a small town in Texas to open an Echarpe store and to escape the media world for oh, just about 25 years, since they have noticed he hasn’t aged for a couple decades, he needs to disappear and return as his own son. Unfortunately, an old enemy, Lui also...more

In a word: fun. There's witty dialogue, good chemistry between characters, and enough wackiness to keep things lively. The book is about Heather, a single mother full of stifled dreams, and Jean, a vampire fashion designer who must hide his true nature from the world. Circumstances and an old enemy bring these two together, and they must contend with both extraordinary events and mundane life. Sparks creates a nicely superpowered breed of vampire, though her vamps are not too distinct from other...more

The chemistry between Jean-Luc and Heather was hot and romantic at the same time. Jean-Luc is a French fashion designer who falls in love with Heather who is a mortal, and during the time Heather is clueless of his immortality she falls in love with him. But, after she finds out he's a vampire she starts to have her doubts, which makes things harder because Jean-Luc is trying to protect her from Lui, an old vampire that is set to kill Heather. Jean-Luc is compassionate, funny, and very macho in ...more

Heather Lynn was very happy. A world-renowned designer was opening up in her small town and she finds herself caught up in his world. He thinks that she's a rival designer but all she wants is inspiration, and clothes that fit. He's intrigued and a relationship starts, but they have to deal with the people who want him dead and the people who don't want their relatioship to happen.

It was pretty predictable and fairly standard in this genre, readable but nothing spectacular.
