I loved Anastasia when I was little. She seemed endlessly cool and much less annoying than the girls in many of the other books I read. Plus she also felt like someone you might end up like, and might have fun being. And I took solidarity from the way she managed to live through people rhyming stuff with her name...

Reading this now, I suppose I'm mostly surprised by how current it still feels. I remember making lists endlessly after reading this, even though I suppose much of the point of the bo...more

How do I know the Lord is good? Because when things look absolutely grim an Anastasia book gets tossed in my lap. I found the last one at the goodwill and the one before that my sister bought me on a whim. I found this one in the Pomona Kids library last night after youth night. It is not my favorite of the Anastasia books, but it is a solid story told with wit and joy. As always the character of Anastasia is a delight. If I ever decide to get a Masters in Children's Literature (back-up plan) my...more

I think I might have to find more of this series! I always love Lois Lowry's writing, and this is no exception. Anastasia Krupnik tries to help her mom be a better housekeeper by creating the perfect schedule. But when mom goes on a business trip and Anastasia is in charge, she finds it's not that easy. Add in getting asked on her first date and her 3 year old brother getting chickenpox, and it's quite the chaotic and funny adventure! All the characters are clever and likeable and I found myself...more

Oh, Anastasia, the scrapes you get in to.

I didn't enjoy this book as much because it kept driving me bonkers that Anastasia's mother had to go out of town for a week, her brother got sick, and so Anastasia had to stay at home from school to take care of him...It felt like, Hello, Myron? Would you like to step up as other parent in this family, the other adult, and take care of your sick kid? You know, instead of letting your daughter miss tons of school so she can do all of these household chor...more

The Anastasia series was one of my favorite book series as a kid - partly because the main character's name was Anastasia, and partially because it's just such a cute series. I couldn't believe when I stumbled across one of the Anastasia books at a thrift store, and of course bought it & read it for the first book in my "YA of the 80's & 90's" book challenge.

The book is cute, full of kid-drama, and reminds me of life when I was that age.

In this Anastasia book, the mom has to go on a work trip and all of the housework and childcare is left to Anastasia, who is 13. That's kind of a weird thing to happen in a children's book which is not about having one of your parents die in your rural mountain home.

I like this one well enough, but I think the author is stretching to come up with plot lines.

Anastasia's mom has to go out of town, so Anastasia is in charge. She thinks she can handle taking care of the house and her 3 year old brother, but she is sadly mistaken. Her dad is not much help.
This is the most ridiculous and sexist of the Anastasia books. Although they make a big deal of titling the housekeeping schedule "Krupnik Family Non-sexist Housekeeping Schedule" it is pretty obvious that Mrs. Krupnik does all the work around there and that the rest of the family would be (and is) los...more

Anastasia is one of my favourite childhood characters. I love how quirky she is, and the books are pleasant, enjoyable, and have a wry sense of humour that I can relate to. They are- or at least the ones I have read are- suitable for younger readers.

Not my favorite of the series, because the whole plotline about the date with Steve Harvey is way too embarrassing. But I forgot about Annie! HAHAHA. And the tap-dancing lesson salesman helping her cook dinner!

I remember my mother reading this one and laughing her head off. It really is funny -- and probably nothing the actual intended audience is going to appreciate. Kids' books for adults!

I loved the Anastasia books as a young girl and really appreciated Ms. Lowry's distinct writing style. Everyone's a bit too clever with their dialogue sometimes, but I related to Anastasia as a slightly bookish but similarly naïve girl who wants to be a writer.

I loved the sort of realistic approach to hijinks in this volume. Normally "hijinks ensue" is really annoying in a children's book, but this worked out really well and seemed plausible. I love the character of Anastasia's father, and how...more

is the series losing steam, or am i? this and the next were disappointing...

Hilarious. Just plain funny as well as warm and believable.

Funny and appealing, like all the Anastasia books. Although the plot is a little more over-the-top than usual, the oddest part for me was how every Krupnik family dinner begins with a previously-frozen piece of meat (the issue being that they're constantly forgetting to take it out to thaw ahead of time). While the solution presented is a microwave, I kept wondering why they couldn't just keep a week's supply in the fridge instead of the freezer. Overall, though, I'm really enjoying rereading th...more

dated but awesome.

Anastasia's mom has to go to California on business, leaving Anastasia in charge of the house. No problem. *Except* Sam gets the chicken pox, dad's old girlfriend comes back into town, and Steve Harvey asked her out on a real date! How will Anastasia handle it all? And maybe housekeeping isn't quite as easy as it looks...

Anastasia'a antics are always amusing, and this is no exception. Her attempt at a romantic, gourmet dinner is hialrious, as are all her musings. Fun book!

Again with the Krupniks - I just love their household. There's just something about them, even though at this point I'm feeling too mature for her teenage first-time-for-everything antics. It's sad when I grow up and the books don't grow with me, but I can't pretend anymore that she's the same age as me, and still has no idea how to dye a tablecloth.

That doesn't stop me from loving them, though.

I don't remember how the conversation with Wendy started, but it ended with, "You MUST read ANASTASIA ON HER OWN." So I did. And I laughed aloud the entire time! Anastasia is as charming and quirky as always, but I also very much related to her mother and to the housekeeping chores Anastasia must learn to deal with. My children found the book less charming than I did, however.

"Anastasia in Her Own" is probably the most relatable story in the "Anastasia" series. Anastasia is the everytween in this book, wanting to prove her independence but finding that she stills needs to be taken care of. I really wish I could've read all the books in the series. I certainly enjoyed the ones that I did.
Jessica
Anastasia's mom goes away for a few weeks, leaving her to be the lady of the house. Not a problem. Even when Anastasia decides to hold a dinner party to try and woo the boy of her dreams. . . .
Wendy
This one is pricelessly funny. My favorite moment is when Anastasia calls the telemarketer back to get advice on the gourmet dinner she's cooking.
Kate
The one where her mom goes to LA, Annie comes back, and everyone gets chicken pox. Freaking funny. Poor Anastasia and her purple-themed dinner.

Great book and all, but a "nonsexist" family in the '80s was still pretty sexist.

Taken from Lowry's website:
"I’ve always felt that I was fortunate to have been born the middle child of three. My older sister, Helen, was very much like our mother: gentle, family-oriented, eager to please. Little brother Jon was the only boy and had interests that he shared with Dad; together they were always working on electric trains and erector sets; and later, when Jon was older, they always...more
