Cycling fans will enjoy this title a lot more than those who don't follow the sport, but even for those who are unfamiliar with the rules and tour names will be able to follow the plot line. High schooler Evan Boroughs happens to be at the right place at the right time and receives an offer to join a professional cycling team on the Tour of California. He'll need to miss school, cancel a skiing trip with his girlfriend and her parents, and disappoint his mother, but he simply can't turn down thi...more

Evan is thrilled when he meets biking legend Dash Shipley while working as a tour guide with a cycling company. At first, he is mistaken for someone else, but is still approached to be part of a racing team that Shipley is putting together. The training takes a huge amount of work, which makes it difficult for Evan to get through his senior year and have time to spend with his girlfriend, who wants to become a doctor as much as Evan does. Still, biking is what Evan loves best, so it is worth the...more

Senior Evan Boroughs never imaged that his part-time job at Arizona Cycling Tours would introduce him to the gods of his beloved cycling universe, but during Winter Training camp in Phoenix one of those gods, Tour de France winner Dashiell Shipley, approaches Evan and invites him to join his team for the upcoming Tour of California race. Being a lifelong cycling fan, Evan has no choice but to say yes, but in doing so he risks losing his right to walk with his class during graduation, his girlfri...more

"Racing California" is a must-read for fans of cycling, although prior knowledge of the sport is not mandatory. Even if you don't know a peloton from a domestique, its easy to pick up the lingo and get swept up in the fast-paced action. At a brisk 190 pages, the read is as swift as a downhill ride.

The book follows Evan, an 18-year-old Arizona high schooler who gets the chance of a lifetime to race in the Tour of California with his idol, champion cyclist Dash Shipley (think Lance Armstrong with...more

Evan is a senior in high school. He is a cyclist and works as a tour leader for bicycle tour groups when he is not at school. He draws the attention of some people on the pro racing circuit and he gets recruited to ride for a team. They want him to ride in the Tour of California race on the same team as his hero, Dash Shipley. Evan is overjoyed about the opportunity even though it means a lot of hard work – and possibly ruining his chances to graduate with his senior class. Despite his parents'...more

I really am not a big fan of sports novels, nor do I follow pro cycling, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this novel. It's about a regular highschool kid who gets the chance of a lifetime to take part in a cycling race around California on his hero's team. If you're like me and don't know anything about cycling or the terms used in the sport, you don't have to worry about becoming lost because the book makes it easy to understand.
