“Heartbreak Tango” Manuel Puig. 11/11/12

Elevated now to classic status, the book is an indispensable source of inspiration to me. The novel’s form is like no other—it is an exhilarating experiment done just exactly right. Cannot be recommended by me enough times—READ IT!

This was my previous review (11/18/11):

Manuel Puig: I immediately place him above Garcia Marquez and Bolaño. No, really. He insists on writing love stories in the least-possibly direct way, which is certainly a gust of fresh air...more

By far my favorite of all Puig's novels. He's at his absolute best in utilizing a variety of voices and forms (letters real and forged, phone conversations, death notices, prayers, photo albums, police reports) to tell the story of Juan Carlos and all the women of Vallejos he was involved with.

The serial structure of the novel--told in sixteen "episodes," like a radio drama or telenovela--highlights the way in which the characters tend to interpret their lives through the lens of sentimental po...more

I recently learned that Manuel Puig is one of Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai's favorite authors and his novel Heartbreak Tango was inspiration for Wong's classic Days of Being Wild. The novel concerns the sickly Lothario Juan Carlos Etchepare and those connected to him, family, lovers, and whatnot, in the fictional small town of Colonel Vallejos. It is a realistic tale told in an unconventional manner through the testimony of others in third person narration, stream of consciousness, interviews...more

Y como siempre unos diálogos excelent...more

La recomien...more

Though it took a while to finish the novel, it was a very interesting hybrid of prose, conversation, film dialogue that depicted a small town's obsession with the town lothario--Juan Carlos Etchepare.
The novel is structured similarly to that of the mind**** of one man whose seductive grip holds several women in his life in such a way that they will always be under his spell.

This book was so fun! The story of a young, ailing Don Juan and the women who love him in 40s Argentina, it's basically a telenovela told in a variety of fascinating ways, everything from correspondence to inner monologues to pure dialogue to minute-by-minute chronicles of a night from an invisible observer. I felt like I was eavesdropping the entire time and more than once had the urge to say, "oh no she didn't!" Excellent.

I lost count of the times I re-read this. I wrote my MA thesis on Puig, which should probably have put me off for life, but of all his novels this is the one I'd go back to again. It's nostalgic and perhaps even sentimental, but it's a beautifully written story love and loss.

This and "El beso de la Mujer Araña" (Kiss of the Spider Woman) are his best work.

Puig weaves together sources like letters, newspaper clippings, photo albums, confessions and even a few dialogues to write a charming, camp and very funny sad little novel about a small-town Don Juan and the women he loved. One of my favourite books ever; a masterpiece. (The title of the English translation is "Heartbreak Tango")

For Puig, this soap opera of a little novel serves as an experiment in perspective, and telling a somewhat convoluted interpersonal drama with "found" documents - letters, police reports, transcriptions of conversations - and some more post-modern devices, like lists of a characters emotions, or objects that might in some obscure way relate to a scene related in a more orthodox manner. Some of this is interesting, and Puig manages to create tension and a bit of suspense, even though the narrativ...more

Sometimes hard to follow due to it's structure, even though said structure is also what makes a pretty standard trope (lothario breaking many hearts) interesting and unique. I think I'd enjoy it more after another read through - now that I have a clearer picture. Great translation though IMO

i read this book in college for my Contemporary Latin American literature class. It was the first time i read the same story told by two and three different people. I loved it!

Parody(?) of radio dramas. Puig does well to have distinct characters and character voices (possibly because of its soap opera affect, that is, exaggerated action).

Book uses letters, internal thoughts, police reports, newspaper notices to tell story. Some of it is interesting and good, but sometimes it gets tedious and boring. Because of this, it took me longer than expected to finish this otherwise short novel. I wouldn't pick it up for days.

Keeping it its radio drama format, it keeps away from...more

Not an easy read and sometimes hard to follow, but compelling told story of a selfish and handsome man who died young and left heartaches in every woman's life he touched.

Otra gran obra.

This book consisted of several different forms and I found it somewhat confusing. Juan Carlos is definitely a rogue, juggling several women at a time but the women are the most fascinating. The interactions of Nene, Mabel, Fanny, Celina, and the widow are ripe with jealousy, envy, humility, arrogance, sarcasm, and ironically, social niceties.

this is my most favorite book from Puig, I have read it several times throughout the years and always find that the story fills me with emotions that i'm unable to describe. the underlying story relates the love/betrayal/jealousy often found in Puig's narrative. it's an engaging story, corny at times, but very enjoyable.

I enjoyed the various story telling styles of the author.
