طوال يومين، وأربع مائة صفحة، توحدت مع فجيعة هذهِ الأم المكلومة بإبنتها، ومع خوفها، بكاءها، ومع عجزها وقلّة حيلتها.
أدركت بأن الأدب واسع، واسع جداً، إلى الحد الذي إحتوى فيه كل رهافة وعظمة هذه العاطفة الأمومية المُعجزة.
وإلى الحد الذي إستطاع أن يصف فيه كل هذا الكم من العاطفة، والماسأة، والحُزن، والغُربة، والفجيعة.
أنهيت الكتاب وأنا أحسِبُ أنَّ لا أشقى على وجهِ هذهِ الأرض من أمٌ تُمتحن في ابنٍ لها.

Isabel Allende starts this book as a collection of letters to her daughter who fell into a coma. She wrote this while caring for her in a Madrid hospital so that when Paula, the daughter who might be suffering from brain damage, woke up, she could read everything about her ancestry.

Beautiful in delivery, exquisite in prose. This may not be a book for everyone because of the subject. This book is written as a letter to the authors' daughter while she lays in a fatal coma. The beauty of the book is in it’s communiqué of the authors’ life as the niece of an assassinated ruler in Chile and her exile from her home country. Several years ago I read Isabel Allende's fiction and remembered liking it, so enroute to the library checkout I grabbed her nonfiction book, "Paula," on impulse. I have mixed feelings about it. It is a definite page-turner, alternating between the true story of Allende's daughter Paula and her terrible health condition, and the flashbacks of Allende's own very eventful life. Never has a book been written more from the heart...A cathartic story written from mother to daughter that brings you on an emotional journey.

When Allende's beautiful, 20-something daughter falls into a coma and is hospitalized in Madrid, Allende finds solace in documenting her own life story and family history in this moving novel.

Allende's talent for story telling made me fall in love with Paula and pray each night for her recovery (I know, what a sap!).

I was hooked with this novel. Allende's prose is beautiful and the story is powerful. I read this book before I became a doctor and before I became a mom, and I was able to feel the love and the sorrow she felt in this period of her life, though. After reading the book I decided to be a mom and to have a vaginal birth to experience what she describes, the explosion of love.

I almost can't believe it took me this long to read this book, but then I remember that I took a four-month hiatus from it because it was so depressing.

Yet, simultaneously, it was fascinating. Somehow, Allende has created a work that's part memoir, part biography, part history lesson, and part... something ethereal, I suppose. I would recommend reading some of her fictional work (namely House of the Spirits) prior to reading this since this is a memoir of sorts - Allende tells her life story as she tends to her gravely ill and comatose daughter. Isabelle Allende won me over with her family history. With a slightly fanciful twist this historical novel is interwoven with the drama of her current life. It is an interesting method, but the story of her family is an amazing one.
Isabelle Allende happened to be present for some of the most formative events/moments of Argentina's history. Even those of us with no former knowledge can recognize some of the names and events she throws out.

I can't believe I didn't read this sooner. Nobody is going to be shocked that this is about grief. All the books I'm reading this year are about grief. أجد بعد تجربتي القرائية المتواضعة أن خير ما أنتجه الأدب العالمي هو الأدب الروسي والأدب اللاتيني " أمريكا الجنوبية " .. وأجد الأخير بارازاً وممثلاً في أبرز أقطابه " غارسيا ماركيز " والآن " إيزابيل الليندي " ..

في المنتصف بين عالمنا والعالم الآخر .. وتقصّ من الجهة الأخرى ما يمكن أن نطلق عليه سيرة ذاتية لذات الروائية : طفولتها ، ونشأتها في بيت أجدادها في تشيلي ،
ثم اغترابها عن تشيلي بسبب سيطرة العسكريين على البلاد بعد اغتيال سلفادور الليندي .. وبالطبع التفاصيل الكثيرة بينهما في الحب وفشل العلاقة الزوجية بعد قرابة ثلاثة عقود من استمراره ،
العمل والبحث عن عمل ، الشهرة .. الكتابة .. الالهام المستمّد من الأرواح التي كانت تحيط بها " لعلها بالغت بعض الشيء ، لكن هذا لم يفقد الرواية واقعيتها وجمالها " إلخ ..
لكن لعل القراءة لأنثى متعة لن تحسّها إلا أنثى مثلها .. ولعلّ أجمل ما عبّرت عنه إيزابيل في اقتباس أذهلني :
" إن العملية البهيجة للحبل بطفل، والصبر بحمله، والقسوة في إخراجه إلى الحياة والشعور العميق بالدهشة التي تنتهي به تلك العملية لا يمكن مقارنتها إلا بإبداع كتاب.
إن الأولاد مثل الكتب هم رحلة إلى أعماق النفس حيث الجسد والعقل والروح، يبدلون اتجاههم ويتحولون إلى مركز الوجود نفسه "
هذا الكتاب يقترب إلى أن يكون سيرة ذاتية ، ولعلّ أجمل المقاطع تلك التي عبّرت فيها الروائية عن مشاعرها ..
وتكثّفت في نهاية الكتاب حين اقتراب ابنتها من الموت ..
كانت هذه الرواية مجموعة من الرسائل إلى باولا .. لم تستطع باولا أن تقرأ الرسائل ..
قرأناها نحن .. وهي تضعنا على مفترق طريق بين حقيقتين تتجاذبانا .. الحياة والموت ..
ولمَ سقطنا في الأولى وأغفلنا الثانية ؟!
الموت هو الشيء الوحيد الذي باستطاعاته أن يجعلنا نعيد حساباتنا في كل ما في أيدينا _ وصار في قلوبنا _ !
ووجود أعمال أدبية تعزّز هذه الأفكار مهم .. ومن المهم قرائتها ..
الرواية .. مثلما كانت فكرتها رحيل باولا ومرضها .. كانت ملئية بالحياة وبالحب " اللا مشروط " بين أطراف كثر في الرواية أو بالأحرى هذه السيرة الذاتية ..
من المهم قراءة أعمال تمنحنا نظرة أعمق نحو الحياة ، نحو آمالنا والأهم نحو آلامنا ..

هذا ما توحيه سرديات هذا العمل منذ بدايته حتى نهايته ، فالموت وحده من يجبرنا على سرد الأشياء التي تتساقط فجأة ً على الذاكرة ، كأن الحياة و الحب و الكراهية و الزواج و الطلاق و الأغاني و الأكل و الكتابة و القراءة و الجنس و النور و الظلام و النوم و اليقظة و الأرق و العمل ، بلا قيمة فعلية إلا في حضور الموت ، وحده الموت من يعطي الأشياء قيمتها الحقيقية و الفعلية ، سواه مجرد خطابة و قناعات عابرة .

أظن أن إيزابيل التي حاولت تحويل باولا إلى أحداث تاريخية كاملة فعلت هذا الأمر رغما ً عنها لأن باولا تحوّلت و هي متجمدة و ساكنة و بريئة و ميتة فعلا ً إلى سلسة من الأحداث الأخلاقية في لحظة ضعف ٍ إنساني يرغب بتجميع تاريخ قادر على إسناده و لو في أحزانه ، فإيزابيل الروائية و بسبب الحالة الإنسانية لباولا جمعت كل أدوارها الحياتية في هذا العمل ، كي تستيقظ ذات يوم لتملي تاريخ عالم ٍ بأكمله بصورة إنسان ٍ واحد هو باولا .(less)

تستعرض الكاتبة بينما تقوم البطلة برعاية ابنتها، حياته كشريط سينمائي كما يقولون. ويأتي باهتمام خاص تطور الحياة في بلدها تشيل، وفترة النضال التي سبقت الثورة والحكم الديقراطي القصير وما شابه من معضلات، كانت مقدمة للانقلالب عليه. وتصف لنا انعكاس ذلك عليها وعلى نشأتها، وخصوصية أنها إبنة اخ سلفادور الليندي، وتحكي عن علاقتها به. ثم الانقلاب، والديكتاتورية وهروبها وهجرتها إلى اسبانيا.
بالطبع الرواية بها مساحة كآبة حيث تتناول موت الآبنة وهزيمة الثورة، وآلام الثوار الذين احبطت أحلامهم، واضطروا إلى الاغتراب عن بلدهم. ولكن في النهاية في الرواية خيط آخر وهي القدرة على التعامل الإنساني المفتوح مع الآلام واستمرار الحياة بصورة غنية والاستمتاع بها
بالطبع لا يمكن تجاوز تحية الاستاذ صالح علماني على ترجمته القديرة الجميلة.(less)

انهيت رواية هي الدخول الاول لي الى عوالم هذه التشيلية المبدعة, رواية تختفل بالحزن و الفقد و الدموع و تصور الموت على انه قدر لابد و ان يكون جميلا

الكتاب مليء بتفاصيل عن ايام ايزابيل و طفولتها التي كونت معينا لا ينضب لحكاياتها في ما بعد
في الفصل الاخير الذي تفصل فيه ايزابيل احتضار باولا في كاليفورنيا وجدت رأسي يمدني بمؤثرات موسيقية تناسب ما اقرأ, اكتنفت مسامعي موسيقى حزينة تلاءم تلك الصفحات الملتهبة حزنا!!
تقول ايزابيل " اذا كتبت شيئا اخشى ان يحدث و اذا احببت احدا اخشى ان افقده, و لكنني لا استطيع مع ذلك ان اتخلى عن الكتابة و الحب... مع كل حب ينتهي فينا جرح, و انا ممتلة باثار جراح متكبرة,,وداعا يا باولا المرأة و اهلا يا باولا الروح"
تشاطرنا ايزابيل الليندي في هذا الكتاب الكثير من اسرارها الابداعية, " يمكن لأي شخص ان يصيب نجاحا في كتابه الاول الكتاب الثاني وحده هو القادر على اثبات انني كاتبة"
" لست انا التي احدد الموضوع, انما الموضوع هو الذي يختالرني و يتلخص عملي ببساطة في تكريس وقت كاف و عزلة و انضباط"(less)

Paula, by Isabel Allende, is a memoir written about the authors life, and her families lives. Written at the beside of her daughter, who is in a coma due to a rare blood condition, she writes this book so saying to her daughter, ‘Listen, Paula. A largely non-fiction, personal memoir from Isabel Allende, written during her daughter's coma and leading up to her eventual death. The present-day stuff, while at times (desperately) rambling, is incredibly heart-wrenching to read, especially when she writes about her and her son-in-law coming to terms with the gravity of Paula's situation. The memories are so well written and great stories in and of themselves.

It is an autobiography written during the watching over her dying daughter. But the book is not that gloomy due to the talented combination of dramatic moments, humour and wisdom. The writer tries to find out the sense of this suffering. كتبت بعد قرائتي لها العام الماضي:
ليس أمرًا هينًا (على كل حال) أن تتمكن كاتبة(أو كاتب) من جذبي لتفاصيل خاصة جدًا بتلك الطريقة المشوِّقة بدون عوامل قد تكون مساعدة كجودة اللغة (في العربية مثلاً) أو عنصر التشويق والمفاجأة (في بعض رواياته) أو غير ذلك، يكون الحدث مستكينًا هادئًا، وتأتي الحكايات والتفاصيل على مستوى متقارب ومتباعد منه، تشد وتجذب، وتجعل القارئ يتماهى تمامًا مع شخصيات العمل (وليس بالضرورة أبطاله) ..

أقرأ باولا، وأتذكر "سقف الكفاية" جدًا ..
لا لتشابه في حدث أو أحداث، ولا طريقة سرد (قطعًا) ولكن لحدوث ذلك الرهان الأخاذ المحبب إلى نفسي دائمًا، رهان الأدب السامي، والذي يصنع له أسطورته الخاصة وخلوده ...
ولا أكتب عن (بـاولا) .. ولا عن مدى واقعيتها، وجرأتها، وقدرتها على الحكي بهذه الحميمية الأدبية البليغة، ولا عن امتناني الكثير للمترجم القدير (صالح علماني) الذي نقل النص بحرفية وذكاء، وإنما أتكلم عن تلك المتعة .. تلك المصداقية والشفافية والقدرة على الجذب إلى ما لا نهاية!!

شيئًا مـا سيستكشفه النقاد بعد مائة عامٍ ، وربما لن يكتشفونه مطلقًا يجعلنا نقول بأدبية الأدب، شيئًا بين تناغم الحروف وتداخل المشاهد، طريقة الكتابة، .... السـرد ..
أذكر خدعةً متقنةً كشف عنها د.يوسف زيدان ذات مناقشة فريدة لروايته الرائعة (عزازيل) يوم قال إنه يختار مخارج الحروف التي تتلاءم مع نفسية الشخصية داخل الحدث، ودلل على ذلك بإحدى مقاطع الرواية، الحقيقة أن تفسيره ذلك أبهرنا جميعًا، ولكني أذكر أن الكتاب ليسوا سواء في طريقة الـ"سبـك" تلك، والكتابة، البعض منهم تلقائيون جدًا، يأتي منهم الكلام كما يفكرون به، وإلا لما كانوا مبدعين ...
هذا هو الإبداع
ليس الإبداع ملقى على قارعة الطريق، كالكلمات، ولكنه داخل نفس كل كاتب، وطريقة نظمه للعبارات، ورصده للمواقف والأحداث، بقصدٍ حينًا، وبدون قصدٍ أحيانًا أخرى ...
في كل ما أكتب أتمنى فقط، أن أصل لهذه المقدرة ...وليكن ما أكتبه عظيمًا جدًا (أقصد ظاهر العظمة) أو حقيرًا تافهًا ( قد يبدو كذلك) ... ثم لينصرف الجميع!
ولأن نفوسنـا ليست على "مـقاسٍ" واحد، فنحن بالتأكيد نختلف، ونتخالف في طريقة تلقينا، ... في البداية كنت أدهش عندما أجد ما أعجبني جدًا، قد ملَّ منه البعض، أو ضاق به ذرعًا فلم يكمله، بعد فترة، أو فترات أيقنت أن ذلك الاختلاف كشأن كل اختلاف من طبائع الأمور ... ولكنه كانت توقفني كتابات أجمع الناس على اختلاف مشاربهم على حسنـها !!

كنت أود أن أتكلم أكثر !
ولكني سأسكت الآن (less)

هل يبدو مشوّقاً الإصغاء لامرأة تحكي حياة الأشخاص،الأشياء من حولها
وحياتها أيضاً؟

بالنسبة لي لا ، بالرغم من أنني من ذات الجنس إلا أنني إلى الآن لا أشعر بأريحية تجاه أي امرأة تسرد قصصاً واقعية تخصها بإسهاب

إيزابيل هاهنا تقوم بذات الدور ، لا أسلّم بتصنيف هذا الكتاب كرواية إلا أن مساحة الاستطراد التخيلية التي تبثها إيزابيل ترشّحه لذلك
إيزابيل كاتبة وليست أديبة ... في هذا الكتاب
روح شخصية المرأة الثورية ذات القضية تستفرد بالعمل هذا بقوة تنمحي معها حضور أي شخصية أدبية

كم كمية النزاهة والشجاعة وربما الجنون نحتاجها لنشر غسيلنا على حبال العالم؟
أيّاً كان القدر اللازم إلا أن إيزابيل قد حازت نصيباً وافراً منه ، وكنت أجدها في محكّات كثيرة تستحق الوقوف دهشة لا إعجاباً فحسب على ما تبثه من صور التجلي مع الذات
لا أنكر أن لإيزابيل حيلة مكشوفة في الاعتراف ما يعتبره الآخرون خطايا لتُسكت بها الرغبة في التواري وعدم البوح وربما الخجل، هي حيلة المبالغة والسخرية
إن الآخرين لا يعرفون عنك سراً في حالتين
عندما تحجم عن ذكره تماماً
وعندما تذكره بطريقة ساخرة وبإيحاء مبالغ فيه بحيث يبدو صعب التصديق
وأعتقد أن الطريقة الثانية هي التي استندت عليها إيزابيل لتستطيع من خلالها أن تتجلى شخصيتها الصريحة جداً والصادقة جداً ، ما أنا متأكدة منه هو أنها لا تخطط لذلك ، هذا جزء منها ومن طبيعتها التي لا يمكنها أن تنفصل عنها

أحببت الأجزاء التي كانت تتحدث فيها من أعماق ذاتها ، تصف شعورها ، تلخّص حياتها ، تفلسف تجاربها ، وتثري بذلك دفتر الاقتباسات لدي
كان ذلك هو الجزء الأقل في مجمل سياقات كتابها
أما الجزء الأكبر فكان للصورة والخيال التصوري
لذلك صرت أرغب في مشاهدة عمل مسرحي لها، فهذا بالضبط ما تكتب إيزابيل على مقاسه

أحببت الابنة باولا ، وشعرت أنها تستحق كتاباً أدبياً آخراً يُكتب عنها وليس إليها(less)

I have become very interested in Isabel Allende’s books. She is a very impressive author and the facts that she integrates her Hispanic culture makes me eager to read her books. This particular book came to my attention from my older sister’s book stash. I have read The House of the Spirits which contained elements of magical realism, and the moment I saw that this was a memoir I wanted to read it all the more.
