A love story that slowly blooms from a friendship borne of tragedy and one man's voyage of self discovery!

tumblr_m283uvKWEW1r90vylo1_500

It was hard for me to put this book down, it was one of those "just one more chapter" books. I have had this sitting on my Kindle for a while "to read" like so many others! but with the second book in the series released on Friday, I thought I had better get a wriggle on and read it!

K.C. Burn is a new author to me and I have to say I loved her writing... It drew me in and had me totally eng...more

Lovely, fantastic story.
Usually, I'm the first person to complain when the MC lose the partner and they move on to quickly.
Although, in this case I was so happy that Davy did just that, as Ben was a controlling, philological abusive prick.

I like also, that the story focus around Kurt and Davy, and we didn't get to know much about Ben and his controlling behavior.
For me this story was perfect.

The relationship between the 2 characters gradually grew from friendship to love, it wasn't insta-love,...more

Started very promising, I loved both of the MCs. Kurt and Ben were cop partners, when Ben died in duty. Kurt was shocked when he learned that Ben had a life parter, Davy. Oh, Davy was such a sweetheart, who just ached to be loved. I loved reading about how Kurt took care of the grieving Davy. How they built a strong friendship.

But a little past halfway in, the book started to drag for me. When there was no reason for Kurt to suffer so much. (view spoiler)[Okay, Davy didn't want to be wi...more

Nice story about Kurt, a supposedly straight cop who had always thought sex was sometimes too much effort for the pleasure you got from it. He'll learn why when he falls in love with Davy the 10-yr lover of his deceased partner. He was gay all along.

What I liked about this book:
- The building of the friendship and intimacy between Kurt and Davy (nearly half the book)

What I didn't like:
- A disturbing aggression scene etc. (view spoiler)[ Davy quasi-rapes Kurt, throws him out and for months igno...more

This book was so very good! A love conquers all story born out of tragedy. Kurt is a police detective and his partner Ben dies in the line of duty. Kurt thought he knew Ben after being partners for three years. He trusted the man with his life and thought Ben trusted him. At Ben's funeral he finds out Ben had a life he never talked about. Kurt feels betrayed that Ben never shared his ten year relationship with his lover Davy.
Kurt wants to help Davy with his loss and shows up at Ben's house to o...more

A little bit of angst and a little bit of sap!

I loved it! I think on any other day, I would probably not give this 5 stars. But today, it was exactly what I was in the mood for. I devoured it! Could not put it down. Its the usual cop gfy/ofy drama..."straight" cop falls for dead partner's lover... But I just adored the friendship between these two men and how they were somewhat able to help each other heal. There was a fair amount of sexual tension and when they finally had "angry" sex it was ho...more

Kurt has lost his partner, Ben, and discovered Ben had a secret life that he never shared. Davy is the said secret life. Kurt befriends Davy trying to help him overcome his grief over Ben's death. While his friendship with Davy deepen, Kurt finds himself attracted to Davy. Is Kurt gay? Will Kurt be able to "come out" to everyone if he is? Will Davy want him if he does?

I enjoyed the story. Kurt's struggle to accept his sexuality especially so late in life has a ring of truth to it. I had a hard...more

My first thought was " Why did I have this on my tablet for four months?"

The story that K.C. Burn wrote was very, very interesting. The writing, full of emotion, humor and a lot of self-discovery, brought these characters together in a way that you could not help but cheer them on. It started out slow, but after I read a while I thought it added to the story since Kurt and Davy were slowly getting to know each other too and had so many things to sort out.

I appreciated the author's pace and how i...more

Why oh why did I wait so long to read this book?! I REALLY REALLY REALLY LIKED IT!!!

It had such a different pace to most books out there, whether stories with a GFY theme or even cop romances. I also really enjoyed the very hard look it gave into what it can be to live in the closet not only for the person that chooses this but for the partner that goes along with it. It was kind of chilling to read about the traumatic effects living like your life in secret can have on a person.

I wavered between a 3 and a 4 for this book.
I want to give it a 4 because I liked the main characters, supporting characters, story and how it was developed. But a 3 because the book is a bit slow in the beginning but I felt rushed in the end. So a bit of weird pacing of the story.

Kurt is a cop that after the death of his partner (Ben) finds out his partner was gay. Davy was Ben's life partner and is totally gutted by his death. After Kurt finds out about Davy and notices how bad he is doing he...more

I really enjoyed this book. I have read it a few times now & I enjoyed it just as much the second time round. I loved that the author took the time to write a story of decent length...allowing for a slow & satisfying development of the characters. The characters were very easy to like & I really wanted them to get their happy ever after. The sex was beautifully written but it didn't dominate or overwhelm the story either.

My only 'complaints' were that I found the character of Simon t...more

Cop Out by KC Burn is a coming-out drama that may delight readers who love Gay-For-You or Out-For-You storylines. It features one third-person viewpoint from an appealing character. Kurt is a big, tough cop, who has been struggling through lackluster dates with women, too busy to question why he can’t seem to click with the right person.

Beneath Kurt’s brawny exterior and straightforward demeanor, he is a deeply caring man with a strong instinct to reach out to people in need. This connects him w...more

Ah, another Cop M/M story. How I love thee! *grin*

Detective Kurt O'Donnel is on a raid with his partner Ben when every thing goes down the shit hole. The building that they are raiding is blown apart killing Ben and seriously injuring Kurt. During and after, Ben's funeral Kurt realizes that his work partner was practically a stranger to him - Kurt didn't even know that Ben had a life partner for over ten years - and that too a guy!

Read this when it first came out and really enjoyed it, just read again as I've bought the follow up and found I enjoyed it just as much the second time round. KC Burn has managed to pull off a much used plot in m/m romance that can very easily leave you thinking hmmmm? GFY story lines however enjoyable, can be a bit too hard to believe but I really bought into this as instead of the usual ' I'm straight but suddenly I'm attracted to a man within minutes ' trope,...more

As soon as I started this book, I was regretting that it had taken me so long to do it. Cop Out is a very nice “gay for you” story, but it was not “pushed”, it didn’t feel fake: Kurt may be straight, or at least he has never had any interest in guys before from a sexual point of view, but then he meets Davy, and it’s love, a love that doesn’t distinct between gender.

Starting from the assumption you shouldn’t speak bad of the dead, I shouldn’t say that I really disliked Ben; he is Kurt’s detectiv...more

I chose this book because I really enjoyed some of the author's other work and the blurb sounded really keen too. And this story did not disappoint.

Kurt is a homicide cop who ends up on a special task force with his partner. The mission goes wrong and Kurt is injured and his partner is killed. Kurt comes from a big boisterous Irish family and he is brought home and coddled by them all as he recovered. It is as he attends the funeral that he realizes that his partner was not just private, but se...more

Three Crow Press Review by Lyne23

From the very first moment this story is full of angst. When Detective Kurt O’Donnell and his partner Ben answer a tip from an informant things go to hell in a hand basket very fast. When Kurt awakes in the hospital and learns of his partner’s death, the survivor’s guilt he suffers from comes across very realistically. Unfortunately these aren’t the only hard times Kurt has to overcome. The author went out of her way to bring out every emotion from Kurt as he lea...more

I must be honest and say that I didn’t expect this book to be so good. I don’t mind reading M/M books but I have found that often times the story lines are all very similar. Cop Out really stood out on its own in that regard.

The plot line was solid and very believable. I really felt like the characters had depth and chemistry.

This book is a complete package. We get to go through all the emotions and uncertainty that Kurt feels as he goes from being a friend to Davey to eventually realizing that...more

I love a 5 star book that surprises you. While I loved the blurb I have recently found a heap of great blurbs but found the story itself lacking. Well this book lives up to its blurb and surpasses it.

Some Highlights

* I think this is in my top 5 GFY I have ever read. I loved how it was a slow and believable progression. Kurt had only slept with woman but there was an obvious passion that was missing. I also liked how it took Kurt awhile to acknowledge his desires.

* I loved how Kurt dealt with h...more

A slow starting gay-for-you (out-for-you) story about a cop, Kurt, who loses his police partner/mentor in an act of violence, only to discover that his mentor had a life partner he had not known about... A life partner who was male - Davy. Realizing he didn't know his partner as well as he had thought, and feeling guilty that he hadn't realized it while his partner was still alive, he befriends the grieving man, helping him to find his feet in world now completely different.

I really liked this story about a man, a cop, coming to terms with his attraction to another man, who happens to be his dead partner's lover. I thought it started out really well with Kurt just trying to help Davy through his grieving and becoming friends along the way even though the more he learns about Ben (the dead partner) the less he likes the man. I felt the more I read, the more I could see the love growing between them first as friends then as something more. Reading about Kurt falling...more

I suppose this could've been a 3 star book instead, but somehow most of it just warmed my heart enough for 4, so I decided to be generous, lol.

Cop Out is a lovely story about finding your way after things change drastically in your life, getting over grief and finding yourself when your identity is suddenly put to a test.

My problem with this book was that I really liked the secondary characters more than the main characters. Davy found his spine after Kurt did something really extreme and shocki...more

I added this book to my to-read list after reading First Time, Forever by Burn. A blogger and fellow tweeter told me to reaad Cop Out stat! so I heeded her advice and purchased the ebook and started reading immediately.

I really liked this book. Kurt and Davy's relationship was beautifully and wonderfully written. They both bonded over the loss of Ben. I loved how Kurt took care of Davy and helped him through the mourning process by just being there and being his friend.

Kurt is a Police Detective that helps out the widow of his recently deceased partner. The fact that the widow turns out to be a man by the name of Davy catches Kurt off guard as he had no clue about his partner Ben being gay. Yet Kurt is able to look past that and begins to help Davy deal with his grief, gradually forming a friendship that turns into more.

I really liked that instead of jumping straight into bed and a relationship, the two characters took their time to develop their frie...more

I liked this book. Kurt was an interesting character with a huge Irish family around him, and obviously grew up knowing he was loved and had back up should he ever encounter any problems. Davy was a solitary person, forced into being that person by his relationship with Ben (Kurt's former cop partner-Ben insisting that they stay in the closet), and upon whose death, Davy went to pieces as most people do, but the difference here being that no-one knew of Davy's existence other than his sister, an...more

When his police partner is killed in the line of duty, Kurt O’Donnell realises just how little he really knew the man when he discovers Ben has been living with a male lover for the past ten years. Determined to find out more, Kurt visits Davy and is shocked to discover the extent to which Ben hid the relationship and feels duty bound to look out for Davy in honour of Ben.

However, once Kurt realises the damage Ben’s closeted lifestyle has had on Davy, he starts to hate his former partner and enc...more

This is one of those books I have been a little intrigued by, but still never picked up because it might be to angsty, and I was very curious how the whole "Your first life partner died and now I swoop in and take over" would work. I am really glad though that I finally actually read it.

When Kurt´s partner on the force dies in a raid, he realizes that he had trusted Ben, his partner and mentor, with his life, but that Ben had not trusted Kurt with even a little about his private life. Kurt´s se...more

“Those words should have sent Kurt's hackles up, but he was starting to realize a relationship meant protecting each other, because you couldn't bear for your partner to hurt.” 3 people liked it
“Who the fuck are you? Davy, were you on a fucking date?" Kurt wasn't sure how to express the anger coursing through him without an assault charge, and even though the asshole was no longer kissing or touching Davy, he was getting more irate.

"What the fuck Kurt?"

Ripping his mouth away, Davy panted. "What the fuck are you doing?"

"Kissing you." Or perhaps devouring.

"What makes it okay for you to kiss me and not Andrew?" The words weren't a simple question, but a sneering mockery. Kurt's anger returned full force and his hands moved to Davy's hair, yanking his mouth back within easy reach. "You're mine," he snarled before shoving his tongue back in Davy's mouth.”
