Judy Nunn’s Tiger Men is the dramatic tale of three families who lived through Tasmania's golden era and witnessed the birth of the Commonwealth of Australia and the horrors of World War I.

Judy Nunn is one of my favourite authors, but I did not find Tiger Men as enjoyable as most of her books. It is set in Tasmania's early days and tells the story of some of the early settlers. The first part of the book is excellent, with the main characters - Silas Stanford, a philanthropic businessman and his daughter Amy, Mick O'Callaghan, an Irishman fleeing from his past and Jefferson Powell, an idealistic American - all interesting and believable.

The research is as good as any - Nunn brings the place to life.
The first character was fantastic - I really was engrossed for the first half of the book.
And then it just seemed to spiral downwards. Too many lesser characters, I battled to keep up with who was who in this zoo - with a superfluous German family thrown in - seemingly to be able to illustrate the harsh treatment those of German descent received.
With great respect for the author - who does justice to this great land we live in - hal...more

Tiger Men the first book by Judy Nunn that I've read and the first of this kind of Australian-historical-family-saga type genre that I've read as well. I was curious about her novels and I also love reading stories set in Tasmania (the Thylacine illustrations sealed the deal.)
While I found the writing style a bit laborious to read at times I quite enjoyed the first part of Tiger Men. Mick, the Irish larrikin and the seedier sides of early Hobart were enjoyable and interesting - even if it was a...more

I always enjoy this authors work and this was no exception.
However, there are dissapointments in the second half of the book with a tedious recap of the horror of World War One, the meaningless inclusion of a German family and an all too neat conclusion to the story. There are a large number of charaters and the story is helped by the authors provision of Family Trees which I used repeatedly.
As an Australian I rceived valuable history facts regarding Tasmania that added to the saga.

This is the first Judy Nunn novel I've read. It was given as a gift and so for that reason, I really wanted to like it.
But I didn't.
I made it halfway and could not sustain interest past that. I think if it hadn't been given as a gift, I would have given up sooner.
On the plus side, it is really well researched. Aside from that, it doesn't have that much more going for it. The characters are inconsistent. The dialogue for one or two of them seems out of character at times, not at all what I woul...more

Perhaps I am biased because I am Tasmanian which is where it was set, but this book kept me enthralled from start to finish. It was such a fascinating saga and a real history lesson in itself in fact I found it very difficult to separate fiction from fact as I could identify so much with the place names and the surnames mentioned. The author must have done an incredible amount of research. Every Australian, particularly so Tasmanians, should read it!!
This is by far my favourite Judy Nunn! I was hooked from the very beginning. A saga that spans three generations - the amount of research that has gone into this book made me feel that i was there living the early Tasmanian years and also gave me a history lesson! I thoroughly enjoyed the story line - it spans from the end of the convict years all the way through to war years. There a quite a few people in this book, so pay attention to keep in line who belongs to what family. And easy five star...more
I have tried and tried to read this book but neither the plot nor characters are captivating. I struggled to get to half way. I thought it was going to be one of those books that took a little while to warm up but unfortunately it didn't get going for me.
There was no mystery behind the characters to keep me reading.
This was the first time I have tried to read Judy Nunn and I conclude she is not my cup of tea!

Enjoyed this one as it was based in Tassie (my home state); Easy read; interesting to learn the history behind how our Tassie Tiger was wiped out but also sad reading and being reminded of how our indigenous community was so callously and coldly wiped out in Tasmania.
A good read.
