Noted evangelist and author Billy Graham, in his latest and perhaps last book entitled “Nearing Home” provides insight into what it means to grow old. This book is a valuable discussion on the essence of aging from one who has most certainly fought the good fight of faith and is looking forward to the next chapter in his life, namely spending eternity with the God he has so faithfully served.

Those who are older in age would probably benefit the most by this book. But I also believe that there is something for the younger as well. In one section he points out that our instant technological society with all its gizmo's while its a plus in some ways; its also made “Patience a lost virtue”. I hadn't really heard it expressed quite that way before. And if you are a follower of what Billy Graham has accomplished through following Jesus, it would be a worthy addition to your Library. Today I am reviewing Nearing Home by Rev. Billy Graham. The book offers lots of good practical advice not only for the elderly but for all adults. Rev. Graham covers the topics of sound financial planning, wills and living wills just to name a few. There is also advice concerning spiritual matters woven throughout the book.
Nearing Home reminded me very much of good grandfatherly advice being passed on to those he cares about. While the book is geared toward older folks, there are also pearls of...more

A Book About "Life, Faith, and Finishing Well!"
"But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.--Acts 20:24 (ESV)
Growing old has been the greatest surprise of my life," says Billy Graham, known by many as God's Ambassador. "I would have never guessed what God had in store for me, and I know that as I am nearing home, He will not forsake me the la...more

In his latest book, Graham provides a firsthand experience and somewhat of a guidebook for growing old and preparing for death. No, it doesn't actually sound like the most fun topic to read about, but it is well written and far from boring. Graham's firsthand experiences add so much depth to this book; without them, the book would be drab and boring. Graham covers topics such as outliving your loved ones, growing physically weaker and preparing financially as we age. He encourages the older gene...more
As Dr. Graham opens this latest memoir, he says "Growing old has been the greatest surprise of my life. I would have never guessed what God had in store for me, and I know that as I am nearing home, He will not forsake me the last mile of the way."
Like his other inspirational books, this is an easy but thought provoking read. Throughout the book, Dr. Graham explores the challenges of growing older. And not just growing older, but growing older gracefully. Full of personal stories, both secular a...more

93 and Counting
Billy Graham is 93 years old writing a book. That in itself is noteworthy. 93 years. That’s a ripe old age. However, what Graham argues is that aging in itself is not enough one most finish well. He says,
The Bible is dotted with other examples of individuals whom God used in their latter years--men and women who refused to use old age as an excuse to ignore what God wanted them to do.

Rev Billy Graham is one of the most well known and respected Christian pastors. I am so happy that he chose to write this book about how to live an honorable and useful life as we grow older. There is much useful information for those of any age, but especially those who are starting to feel the restrictions of age. Rev. Graham shows how God used men and women from the Bible when they were in their later years of life, and, of course, how He can still use us today.

This is not just a book for the elderly.
This is a book for everyone.
I feel like I understand the value of old age, and the wisdom and experience which comes with a long life, better now than before I read this book.
Billy Graham, the famous evangelist, shares nuggets of wisdom about how to finish life well.
But he has plenty of insights for younger people to consider as well.

A Conversation with Mr. Graham
This book was a conversation. It was a unique perspective from a man who has lived a unique life and has known a wide variety of people. This was a book that provided a wealth of history and the present that people do not think about - getting old. His discussion on never thinking about getting old whether it was himself or anyone else is how disconnected our society is from those who have limited connection to our aging relatives. He mentions people in his past tha...more

At first I admit that I was a little hesitant in picking up this book. However, Billy Graham reeled me in with his reflections on purpose, legacies, discipline and planning. He asks, “Why is aging a young person’s issue?” and the book talks about the importance of learning from others. It is full of wisdom and hope to readers of different ages. As a twenty-something year old adult, I find it a blessing to have read such reflections from a man who has lived life according to the Lord and now atte...more
Nearing Home is a delightful book by one of the most influential Christians ever. Billy Graham shares reflections on "finishing well" in life. Though much of the book is how to live in your senior years, Graham's wit and wisdom are applicable to any age. Here are several quotes to give you a taste of the gems here:
"Respect of others grows as we ourselves become dependent upon others."
"God says you are greater than your work, and your work is only a part of His plan for you."
"We should always b...more

Billy Graham is known by almost everybody around the world. He has been an evangelist for a long time. Millions have given their hearts to God while attending one of his crusades or watching them on television. Dr. Graham is a great evangelist with a great life story.

Billy Graham writes a touching book on growing older. He says that he was always ready to die for Christ but no one taught him how to get old with purpose. This book is part memoir (stories from youth and Ruth's passing), part practical advise (do a living will), and part Billy Graham preaching (make sure you are right with God). The theme is if God still has you on this earth, He has a purpose for you-not to be a nag or complaining, but to be fruitful in all seasons of life; retirement is not j...more
“There is so much the young can learn from those who have traveled the distance. Likewise, the elderly would be wise to consider the contribution the young make even to our own lives. They will see our mistakes, and they will see our triumphs. We will hopefully recognize their struggles and accomplishments and encourage them as they face the unknown future. The Bible says, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose…a time to gain, and a time to lose” (Ecclesiastes 3:1,6 NKJV). In...more

The truth is that instant success robs young people of the journey; but it is along the journey that we obtain knowledge, collect memories, and have a sense of achievement that makes life a rewarding experience. ~ Billy Graham

-Learn to forgive

I was interested in reading what will probably be Billy Graham’s last book, Nearing Home. The subtitle, “Life, Faith, and Finishing Well” is an apt one. This is not a book of theology, but a book of wisdom, written by a faithful servant of God who is facing the debilitating effects of advanced age with honesty and grace.

Borrowed this book I gave my Mom for Christmas, now wish I had my own copy. Usually with my own motivational books I highlight as I go so when picking back up could quickly scan through, but with this book would be mostly highlighted.Great insights, wisdom, and guidance on aging but I also think for the younger people to think about, specifically young adult age. I found it very interesting in one of the latter chapters he shared as he has gotten older that he had to chance to spend an afternoon...more
This book contains so much wisdom that if you didn't grow up in a multigenerational Christian family, you will not miss out in life and will know how to prepare for life's ultimate journey. I feel like he's a godly grandfather giving such nuggets of wisdom that I might have missed out.

I couldn't wait to start reading "Nearing Home" by Billy Graham. And from the first page, I wasn't disappointed. There are some people who are just truly gifted at telling stories. I savored every word.
"Nearing Home" is a book about growing older, and each chapter focuses on different aspects of growing older, from the physical, to the mental, spiritual, to preparing for the end of your life legally, and preparing your family. This book is not just for seniors! Written with honesty and love about his journey into aging; it is a revealing look at Billy Graham himself; especially his grief over the loss of his wife, Ruth. As Graham points out, your senior years are part of God's plan too, and while he deals with the physical and emotional aspects of aging in the book; the main emphasis seems to be on getting with the plan! Especially meaningful to me was his emphasis on the active role of grandparents in the lives of t...more
This was a pleasant book to read with lots of practical advice to get your life in order. "Be proactive so others won't have to be reactive." Probably a favorite Bible verse quoted was Psalm 92:14: "They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing!" Good news. Probably the best new thought was that Isaac waited too long to give his blessing to his sons and was "too old to ensure hisfinal wishes are executed properly, and this causes turmoil within the family." I would really give this a 3 1/2 if that were an option.I found the first half of the book especially helpful. My family went through the task of my mother's last year, and we are now dealing with my father-in-law who is 91 and in ill health. This book described accurately many of the difficulties we have encountered during those experiences. The book can be especially helpful for those who are or will be caring for aging parents or grandparents. I am hoping that I can learn from it, since I may...more
I read this book in conjunction with our sermon series on "Life Stages." It was very helpful to get into the world of older men and women -- their struggles, challenges, hopes, frustrations.
Positives:
- Sensitively written. Graham was 93 at the time of this writing.
- Full of Scripture. Barely a page goes by without Graham quoting a relevant Scripture. I was amazed at how many verses apply directly to or address an older generation!
- Emotional anecdotes. The book is sprinkled with illustrati...more

As you can tell by the title, this book deals with the issues of growing old. Billy deals with practical issues like having a will, etc. He moves on to interpersonal relationships with our family and loved ones. This is a great book for anyone to read regardless of their age. In the first full paragraph, Billy says, "All my life I was taught how to die as a Christian, but no one ever taught me how I ought to live in the years before I die. I wish they had because I am an old man now, and believe...more
Billy Graham’s latest book "Nearing Home" is about life, faith and finishing well. Although it address aging much of the practical advise that Dr. Graham shares applies to all age brackets. He discusses the importance of estate and living wills along with issues of family and the power of prayer.

Billy Graham’s newest book, Nearing Home, is an inspirational but sometimes bittersweet read. At 93 years of age, Billy Graham has surprised himself (and many others) that he’s still on this side of heaven. His longing for “home” and his beloved wife Ruth, is very evident all throughout this title but in no way is this a book about giving up and waiting to die. I was encouraged by the advice and wisdom he shares; most of it very practical! He shares many of his life lessons and personal reflecti...more

This is exactly the book on aging that you would expect the great evangelist Billy Graham to write. His writing is straightforward and plain, and his every thought is backed up by Scripture. Oh, and of course, there's an altar call and a sinner's prayer!

Billy Graham‘s most recent work, Nearing Home, is one of those thoughtful, peaceful sorts of books you can either read cover-to-cover, or stroll through at random and still come out ahead either way. It’s like memories of your childhood; you don’t have to bring them up in any certain order to enjoy them.
