Those who are older in age would probably benefit the most by this book. But I also believe that there is something for the younger as well. In one section he points out that our instant technological society with all its gizmo's while its a plus in some ways; its also made “Patience a lost virtue”. Today I am reviewing Nearing Home by Rev. Billy Graham. The book offers lots of good practical advice not only for the elderly but for all adults. Rev. Graham covers the topics of sound financial planning, wills and living wills just to name a few. There is also advice concerning spiritual matters woven throughout the book.

Preaching in Print

What Graham does well in this book is offer practical advise on you can near home well. Often what he says is balanced and he writes in a readable prose style. Nearing Home not a robust theological treatise on dying well. It’s written more like a memoir or a letter to a friend with practical wisdom. The topic of aging, finishing well, and death is such an important topic I wish some of the theological pipework was exposed more explicitly.

Reading it reminded me of the many sermons I’ve heard from country evangelist’s sermons (not preoperative at all) filled with anecdotes, Scripture’s woven throughout, and practical application. He talks at length about managing your finances well in old age, about learning from the younger generation and sharing your wisdom with them, and also covers topics like death of a spouse, retirement, forgiveness, and even technology. And what would you expect from a former evangelist but a clear presentation of the gospel (Kindle Location 1992 of 2637) and also an invitation to pray for salvation (2545).

He argues strongly for finding ministry opportunities in retirement. He says, “Retirement isn’t something that just happens if you live long enough, and it isn’t even a reward for your years of hard work; it is a gift from God. Once you understand this, you will approach your retirement differently” (700). I found this perspective refreshing. In one of the more moving paragraphs Graham says,

Christians are not to be preoccupied with death; God has put within each of us a will to survive. But neither are we to shrink from death or act as if we must fiercely resist it until the last breath. The time may well come, in fact, when life’s burdens and pains overwhelm us so much that we will welcome death as a friend--and that is as it should be. If we know Christ, we know that Heaven is our true home, and (like the saints of old) we are “longing for a better country--a heavenly one” (Hebrews 11:16) (1017 of 2637)

If you’re looking for a ground level book that’s approachable, devotional, & practical than Nearing Home would serve you well.(less)

This is not just a book for the elderly.

This is a book for everyone.

I feel like I understand the value of old age, and the wisdom and experience which comes with a long life, better now than before I read this book.

Billy Graham, the famous evangelist, shares nuggets of wisdom about how to finish life well.

But he has plenty of insights for younger people to consider as well.

This book was a conversation. It was a unique perspective from a man who has lived a unique life and has known a wide variety of people. Billy Graham is a national icon. Even non-Christians know him. He’s a powerful force in our time, bold in his proclamations for Christ. Even at 93 years-old, Graham exudes the same spark that I have witnessed on video clips. Sadly, I have never read a Billy Graham book until now and I have never heard him speak.

The book talks about growing old, finishing well and bridging the gap between young and old. The quote above I highlighted. There were so many quotable items and good points that I wish so many young and old would read and take to heart. Perhaps if we followed Billy Graham’s example we could have a chance at bridging the generation gap. Our young people need to learn the lessons of our grandparents and our seniors need the young people for flexibility and youthfulness. Graham also spoke about preparing for death, and not just in the financial sense.

“Don’t give gifts you can’t afford. This often happens when grandparents try to buy the affection of children or grandchildren by showering them with overly generous gifts. Harsh as it may sound, some parents use money almost as a weapon, attempting to control their children with it or using it to try to bridge the gap between them and an alienated child. They have forgotten the Bible’s wise words: “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). Guard against unwise financial decisions as you grow older.” – Pg. 62

Nearing Home is an excellent book for all adult ages. My husband said, “I don’t want to grow old.” He doesn’t want to feel helpless or dependent on someone else for survival, but like Billy Graham said in his book we have every day to prepare for old age. Our bodies are deteriorating. Psychologically, the people my age aren’t prepared. We’re too busy fighting old age, the inevitable, instead of aging gracefully. He also says that none of us were meant to retire.

A widow left behind has a purpose to do His work. She is not done yet because her husband is gone. Think of the widow who worshiped at the temple. At one time, seniors were honored, and now we think of them as useless. They shouldn’t drive and they can’t do anything, some say. With our attitudes we drive that point into their psyche until they believe it. No one is useless. And while there is nothing wrong with a senior who loves to travel or who is able to retire well, some seniors stop helping. Graham drives in his point that there is no retirement in this world or in the next.

One of his friends joked with Graham about heaven. His friend asked Graham what was he going to do in Heaven since he spent his earthly hours evangelizing? In heaven there will be no need for evangelists. Graham joked that God might appoint him as choir director. Graham also speaks about his enduring love for Ruth and how difficult it’s been for him since her passing. I enjoyed reading his words, and being that this is my first Billy Graham book, I am not disappointed. It exceeded my expectations and gently gave me insight into the older generation that at times have befuddled me. Young or old, everyone needs to read this. Like Billy Graham, I, too, want to finish well. We’re all nearing home because death is uncertain and none of us know the day or time when death will knock on our door. We can be assured that Christ has conquered death (those of us who believe). Graham spends most of the end of the book evangelizing and talking about having a relationship with Christ; not merely believing in Christ, but living it.

This is not a book of theology, but a book of wisdom, written by a faithful servant of God who is facing the debilitating effects of advanced age with honesty and grace.

Although organized into ten chapters, the book takes a meandering course, as if you were sitting down next to Graham and he was relaying his thoughts informally to you. This is not a book of theology, but a book of wisdom, written by a faithful servant of God who is facing the debilitating effects of advanced age with honesty and grace.

Although organized into ten chapters, the book takes a meandering course, as if you were sitting down next to Graham and he was relaying his thoughts informally to you. There are passages of scripture exposition, and some just practical advice (like the importance of a will), but the bulk of the book is simple wisdom about the realities, physical and spiritual, of aging and how to deal with them.

Over and over he circles back to several key themes: the importance of coming to peace with the limitations and realities of aging, of continuing to minister to and impact others around you, and of keeping Christ the foundation of your life. Scattered throughout the book are nuggets like:

“What testimony are you passing on to others following you? Remembering what God has done for you will invigorate you in old age. Others are watching your actions and attitudes. Don’t diminish the impact you can make; pass on foundational truths of God’s word.”

“No matter who we are, retirement presents us with two choices. Either we can use it to indulge ourselves, or we can use it to make an impact on the lives of others. In other words, the choice we face is between empty self-indulgence and meaningful activity.”

“Life is seldom easy as we grow older, but old age has its special joys– the joy of time with family and friends, the joy of freedom from responsibilities we once had, and the joy of savoring the little things we once overlooked. But most of all, as we learn to trust every day into His hands, the golden years can be a time of growing close to Christ. And that is life’s greatest joy.”

Although I am only 47, I found much in this book to reflect on and consider. It was a joy to read, & I heartily recommend it to anyone who is aged or is hoping to be someday.(less)

It’s like memories of your childhood; you don’t have to bring them up in any certain order to enjoy them.

The focus of the book is on the challenge, and the beauty, of aging well. It deals with recognizing one’s value and responsibilities during a stage in life when it may seem like there’s little left to do, or fewer places where one’s value will be recognized. And it’s as much a pep talk for older readers as it is a guide for younger readers on the importance of respecting their elders for the wisdom and experience they can provide. It reaffirms the importance of standing fast in one’s relationship with God regardless of the inevitable challenges that accompany the changes of time.

Reading his commentary on dealing with the pains of aging and grief (Ch 5: “Fading Strength But Standing Strong”), and on providing wisdom and counsel to younger generations not only through words but through actions (Ch 7: “Influencing the Impressionable”), I was reminded again and again of the Godly examples set for me by my grandparents through their love for the Lord and for their families.

It made me think of my Mimi, in particular, and the way she boldly- daily- lives out a hope shared by Graham that her children and grandchildren will “become men and women of compassion, honesty, morality, responsibility, selflessness, loyalty, discipline, and sacrifice… trusting Jesus Christ as their Savior and seeking to follow Him.” (p. 120) In fact, multiple times throughout the book I heard the words in her voice instead of his. I guess you could say my Mimi served as my litmus test on whether or not what Graham was saying checked out as worthwhile advice. (Way to go, Mim. ;)

A few words of advice Graham shares with his readers on “bridging the gap” (p. 121) between generations hit home for me in terms of my own family because I regularly see them living out this guidance in realistic ways. (Way to go, fam. ;) I’ll share it with you here, and trust you’ll also read beyond the list’s disarming simplicity: Pray Consistently, Keep In Touch, Encourage [Your Family], Remember Your Place, and Be An Example.

There were times I found it difficult to stick with the book, as it speaks to a decidedly older demographic than my own. While I appreciated the sentiments the author shared, it was a bit like reading about dealing with grief when you’ve never lost a loved one, or about bonding with your troubled teen when you’ve never had children. I know there is value in his words, but for now I’m just filing them away in the hope that they spring back to mind about forty years from now.

A good summary of the book appears on page 48: “One day you may not be able to do everything you once did or everything you would like to do. Instead of feeling guilty or frustrated or resentful, however, thank God that you can still do some things- and make it your goal to do them faithfully and do them well. Commit your time- and your whole self- to Jesus Christ, and seek to do His will no matter what comes your way.”

Words to live by.

And it wouldn’t be a Billy Graham book if it didn’t end with an alter call.

“No one ever grows too old to accept Christ’s forgiveness and enter into His glorious presence. When we look back over our experiences along life’s journey, we may have regrets about the choices we made, but remember, that was then… this is now. … “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2 NKJV).” (p. 180)

While I wouldn’t want to discourage younger readers from attempting to tackle this book- there is a lot in it to appreciate and learn from, and so many insights into perspectives it’s impossible to gain oneself until later in life- it is most definitely geared toward an older crowd. It is to them I would recommend this book. I think anyone dealing with the issues presented in it will find it encouraging, and will find its sentiments expressed in such a humble, straightforward way they will want to pass along to others Graham’s uplifting take on a potentially difficult subject: that of moving closer to our promised time with God, to nearing home.
