From debut author Cassie Alexander comes a spectacular new urban fantasy serieswhere working the nightshift can be a real nightmare. Nothing compares to being Nightshifted.

Nursing school prepared Edie Spence for a lot of things. Burn victims? No problem. Severed limbs? Piece of cake. Vampires? No way in hell. But as the newest nurse on Y4, the secret ward hidden in the bow...more

3.5 stars

Never judge a book by its cover. Based on the cover alone, you’d think Nightshifted is a light, borderline fluffy urban fantasy about one chirpy nurse and her supernatural patients. You’d be wrong. Nightshifted is dark, twisted and often extremely gory, and the strongest emotion I got from it was an overwhelming feeling of loneliness.

*edit* take two on this book. Buddy reading with Dee.

*edit* and I failed again. I don't know what it is but I can't seem to get into this book. It has a dragon, a zany nurse working the night shift on the "creepy" floor of the hospital, and a hot Brit. This should be a recipe for success.

Sorry, Dee. I tried. I feel like a buddy read failure.

It was strange being there, eating dinner with them. They knew that I knew, and I knew that they knew, and there we all were, a zombie, an assortment of werewolves and/or weredogs, and me, a nurse who was getting used to dealing with vampires. I was struck by how completely normal it felt to be with them, for all of our differences.

Dragons and vampires and zombies… oh my!

Pre: There actually is a nurse on the cover with a dragon-shaped thing in the background. This book will either be full of win or fail, and I want to find out!

Post: Okaaaay. So, this was good. Not perfect, there were some flaws that coulda been avoided, but. :D

There are several things I liked about Nightshifted, and others that I didn't like so much. It's not that there were obvious 'flaws', but sometimes I wish the author had executed particular elements of the story differently.

Nightshifted, while it is a somewhat accurate title, isn't the one I would choose for this book. It's too clever to reflect what's inside. I would at least add a subtitle, something along the lines of "Nightshifted: Crazy Nurse Antics, Random Sex, and A Somewhat Boring Mystery." I think that's a lot more fitting.

Let's delve a bit deeper into the title I just made.

Section 1: Crazy Nurse Antics
Nightshifted was filled with a lot of terminology I wasn't quite familiar with. While I understo...more

This is more of a 3.5 then a 4 but all in all a good first book and an enjoyable read.

I started out with the audio for this book, which I do not recommend. The narrator was not great with any of the accents and while she was not reading in a monotone, it more just matter of fact...there were no inflections or emphasis in her speech....and it made the story slow and boring to listen to. I returned the audio and picked up the book to finish Edie's adventures as a Y4 nurse.

I wish there was a bit m...more

Edie Spence is a nurse on Y4 – the secret ward of County Hospital dedicated to paranormal patients. What’s worse than being a new nurse, let alone new to treating vampires, weres, zombies, and shapeshifters, is that Edie is contracted to work here indefinitely. Her brother Jake was one shoot of heroin away from his last overdose, so Edie did what any loving sister would do: she signed her life away in order to protect him from any future ODs. Still, Edie makes the best of...more

It's like paranormal/urban fantasy is recycling all of the previous genres of women's literature. You can find modern romance, historical romance, horror, thriller, mystery, quilting club, and any other form of chick-lit reworked with vampires and werewolves and marketed with a sexy cover. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Nightshifted is the modern-day paranormal update of the nurse story. Edie is a registered nurse who, in a deal with the... umm, are they devils?... has agreed to work...more

I picked this up at the library due to its cute cover - my cousin is a nurse so the idea of a supernatural hospital wing sounded pretty fun.

However... I am really glad I didn't pay for this book. Why? Well... (view spoiler)[Our nurse in question, Ms. Edie Spence is not especially likable. Or, well, smart. A nurse runs out and has anonymous unprotected sex with some random dude? Good job, there, lady. Then dates and *sleeps with* a ZOMBIE? Call me old-fashioned, but sex with a zombie isn't sweet...more

One night when I was looking for a book to read Nightshifted jumped out and said "Read Me", and I am very glad that it did. I found it to be a very enjoyable book.

Nightshifted has enough of a different premise from the usual vampire/urban fantasy story that I was intriqued and interested right from the beginning. I spent the first half of the book wanting to finish it as quickly as I could so that I could start to read Moonshifted as quickly as possible. However something undefinable happened i...more

As so often I can't decide how many stars to give, two or three. If I take the stars literally, two stars - it was okay, especially considered all the crap the genre came up with lately. there are vampires and werewolves and there's a human girl - but - surprise - there's an actual plot and a story, the characters aren't stereotyped, there are some really nice ideas included and the story moves quickly. solid writing as well, an easy, entertaining read. sounds good, doesn't it?

I purchased this book somewhat on impulse when it was listed as a deal on Amazon. I am very much not sorry that I did. There are some limitations, for instance: the world building was not overly strong. I hate it when people do massive info dumps to tell you what is going on and Ms. Alexander did not commit that sin, but erred too much on the side of leaving things out. In the kindle edition, there is a formatting error in the html coding at the very beginning, but I did not notice any other err...more

First time reading this author and I really enjoyed the book. I do have my normal cover complaints - The dragon in the story did not have wings. The heroine had gained 10 lbs working the night shift and unless she was starved before this woman could not lose 10 lbs and be standing. The heroine's hair length was shoulder and her eyes were blue, not middle of the back and not brown. I wish publishers would have the cover artist at least get this information from authors or read the book first, the...more

I am going away against the crowd a little in my review of "Nightshifted". I loved the synopsis of this book and bought it as soon as I ran across it at the store. It is about a nurse named Edie who works in a secret unit of the hospital. Her unit cares for paranormal creatures. The cover is enticing; showing a nurse with a dragon outlined in a room behind her. Yes, please!

Parts of the book are wonderful. I loved all the scenes at the hospital involving Edie's care of the supernatural creatures....more

SHORT Review: Revolting, horrid, atrocious... other big words for bad.

LONG Review: This story relies on supposedly smart people making incredibly bad decisions for extremely nebulous reasons.

LONGEST Review: I can suspend disbelief about vampires, werewolves, zombies and Shadow-things but hearing about a Nurse having unprotected sex with a one night stand gutted my faith in this story. That may even be a realistic scenario of people doing crazy things under stress, but the author couldn't sell it...more

Simply said, I liked it.

Slightly less simply: I really enjoyed it a surprising amount.

First, an interesting premise: Main character is a night shift nurse who works in the secret wing of the hospital that treats the city's supernatural population.

Second, new twists on old tropes: Yeah, there are vampires and Were-things. But they're different. What's more, we don't spend a whole lot of time learning everything about them. This does two nice things. 1) It keeps the story moving. 2.) It actuall...more

Who takes care of the paranormal when they get sick? Edie Spence is a nurse on Y4, the unit that takes care of them. It is a secret floor in County Hospital that not too many people know about. Edie is just trying to survive and learn the ropes, when “Mr. November” turns to dust before her eyes. His last words were “save Anna.” Now, it is up to Edie to figure out (1) who Anna is, (2) what she needs saving from and (3) how to save her.

Feeling guilty over the death of Mr. November, Edie sets out t...more

I recently picked this book up at my store because I was quite intrigued by the concept, and Cassie Alexander, the author, seemed like such an awesome person. I blew through this book incredibly quick, because the pacing just makes you want to keep going. The protaganist is a great character full of fire and wit, but still with the vulnerabilities we seek to align ourselves with when following along with a character.

The book follows Edie Spence, the new nurse on Y4, the secret underground ward o...more

The concepts behind this book have a lot of merit but there are major flaws.

- Editing was horrible. Found several typos and numerous structure issues.

- The author struggles with scenes that are complex and/or involve multiple people interacting. The scenes are confused, lack description, and the characters move but the surroundings stay the same (or vice versa) most of the time.

- The main character, Edie, is an obnoxious idiot. She knows very little about the human world then finds herself in th...more

If you have been missing Buffy the Vampire Slayer as much as I have and feel that there has not been anything since that has been able to give you that "Buffy fix," then look no further! No, Edie Spence is not a super strong girl who is picked by some weird being to save the world, but she does know how to handle her own in the supernatural world.

Edie Spence had finally graduated from nursing school and landed a sweet job at a private hospital. All of those student loans that she acquired were...more

Sometimes I try a new book/author and I'm less than impressed, other times I feel like oh WOW and yet other times I'm left with a feeling of ...hmmm - good book. Maybe I'll try the next one. I liked Nightshifted - And there is going to be a next one, in just a few months.

Basic premise - Edie Spence is a registered nurse, one who has recently been working at a upper end hospital (i.e. private pay). Problem was, she had this brother who has a certain problem. A stranger offers help if she goes to...more

Nightshifted is about Edie Spence, a night shift nurse in the supernatural wing of the local county hospital. Edie is a good woman with a junkie brother and a reasonable set of quirks. The hospital isn't fancy (it's literally "County Hospital"), the ward isn't whiz-bang nor is it falling apart and ignored. The rest of the staff are characatures with just enough about them to tell them apart.

The plot revolves around Edie committing a newbie mistake in the ward, and having a vampire die because of...more

Nightshifted is my latest read in search of an urban fantasy that is at least half as good as The Dresden Files. And it's ok, a solid three stars. I liked that the protagonist was something other than a cop or a private investigator, as is so often the case in these books. Setting much of the book in hospital ward for monsters is a fun idea, and the author does a good job with it. The protagonist, Edie Spence, is likeable enough. The side characters are largely forgettable, though the preview of...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this!

Alexander creates a universe that is dark yet everyday. Edie has some problems most people can't relate to but can empathize with (her druggie older brother) and other problems that make her a more fleshed out human character. She's down on her luck throughout this whole book, struggling to find a way to escape the Vampire justice hunting her down.

The Good:
-Edie: She's believable, she's a decent person who does what she needs to do to get by. Her decent streak is what g...more

Edie is a nurse who recently took a job with the super secret Y4 section of County Hospital that caters to non-humans. She’d done this as part of an agreement for an entity group known as Shadows who protect the hospital, in exchange for them preventing her drug-addicted brother from overdosing again.

We learn as Edie does about the various non-human species, such as were-creatures, shifters, zombies, vampires and daytimers; sort of like a human servant, who if they live long enough, would eventu...more

I think I hit my limit of medical inspired-anything thanks to the popularity of them on television over the years, but the sight of Edie Spence on the cover of this book, with her Ellen-Page-resemblance and the shadow of a dragon behind her was too good to resist.

The book does not disappoint at all – I only wish those medical shows on TV were even half as interesting. Edie Spence is a nurse on Ward Y4 of County, the ward where all manner of supernatural cre...more

“I nodded. Everyone at the hospital wanted to think that their case was special, and if you were a good nurse, you helped them keep that illusion alive. Knowing that someone down the hall had it worse than you never stopped your own paper cut from hurting, at least not until they came in and bludgeoned you senseless with their amputated leg.” 2 people liked it
