What I really loved about Wicked Nights was the slow building of the romance. The change in Zacharel, his curiosity, Anabelle's determination, her tenacity. To be honest it's a slow read, more an introduction to the world of the Angels of the Dark, but I found I did not mind. I didn't want to jump into a story where I had no idea what was going on and everything needed to be explained at once so I could play catch up, making it even more confusing. Paranormal romance used to be my all-time favorite, numero uno, top choice when it came to reading... and it still is to some extent. However, it seems like the genre is just so overloaded with mediocre and crap books these days, it's hard to find and latch onto something exciting and new. That's why I've been branching out of my comfort zone and have thankfully discovered some ah-may-zing reads in other romance sub-genres (*cough Kristen Ashley cough*). Oh, I've still got my favorite go-to, auto-buy paranormal romance authors and Gena Showalter is among them, but sometimes their books even fall a bit short off the mark (*ahem* 'The Darkest Seduction'). So when I found out GS was coming out with a LOTU spin-off I was both super excited and a tad wary. Turns out, there was no need to be wary. 'Wicked Nights' was fresh, exciting, sexy, action-packed and one of the best books Gena Showalter has written to date.

We first met aloof, sexy badass Angel Zacharel in 'The Darkest Secret' and it was a panty-melting experience. His arrogance and continued cold-indifference have landed him in trouble with the Deity and he now finds himself leading an army of badass Angel misfits. (ROWR! - There are a LOT of tortured bad-boys to love here!!) These guys have been f*ck-ups for a while and this is their last chance - if Zacharel and his demon-fighting crew of Angelic warriors don't manage to redeem themselves within a year then they are Fallen. Trouble is, there is little to no respect between Zacharel and his new army, and they are struggling (and pretty much failing) to work together. When they are called in to defeat a horde of demons attacking an institution for the criminally insane, Zacharel meets a beautiful inmate, Annabelle, who manages to crack his ice-cold facade. She is the intended target of the demons and while he can't understand why he's drawn to her, he decides to free her anyway... And when Zacharel begins to feel for the first time in eons, trust and respect begins to grow between him and his warriors.

There were a lot of twists and turns in 'Wicked Nights', and the last 100 pages were especially gripping. I'll admit that I believed I knew where the book was heading fairly early on - and it does indeed turn out somewhat like I expected... but it also doesn't. Showalter manages to pack in a few unexpected surprises and follows through with a thrilling climax. When all was said and done, I was left completely satisfied and antsy for more! I can't wait for Koldo's story - bring on more 'Angels of the Dark'!

This was amazing! I felt skeptical about reading it, mostly because it's connected to Lords of the Underworld. Actually, all that is connected are the characters (or so i have concluded - and yes LOU characters do appear) so it really isn't necessary to read LOU first. (But because of this book i will definitely read LOU now). And it's my first Gena Showalter experience!

There were definitely some similarities between the characters (Koldo-Amun, Paris-Thane, possibly a Xerxes/McDonald's guy-Qhuinn/Blay storyline) this was a wonderful story. Since this author is sort of a pop author of PNR it makes sense that the reason her books do so well is partly because the woman can freaking write (don't get me wrong, she's no Dostoyevsky, but she can craft a good story), but also partly because we know how the books are going to go and it gives us even more feel-good rushes when we are able to predict the twists. Obviously there is more to it than that. I'm just saying. That could be part of it. Showing male skin on covers probably helps too, as the female brain can process arousing images within hundredths of a second. So, before you even realize what you are seeing your brain is like "Gimme some sugah bay-bee! Woo!" And with that I really think I need to go to bed. Man I suck at reviews. Oh well, maybe I'll reread this later and wince and just edit it. You can do that you know. I didn't know that until recently. Anyway, I edited one review, what was it? Blood of Eden I think. Had a bit of a weak ending so I fixed it. I'm pretty proud of myself for that new ending. It's pretty clever if I do say so myself. You should check it out, and put the book on your don't-touch-if-it's-the-last-book-on-earth shelf. Which sounds like a shelf I need. No, not really, it just sounds cool.

Just finished it and while I'm not completely sure what to think, I thought it was a good read. I mean, I finished it in one sitting or two, and there were several memorable moments. Despite that there were also two or three things that bothered me a little. So.. 3.5, I think? If you enjoy PNR, you'll probably enjoy this.

I’m beyond addicted to her Lords of the Underworld series, and when I heard she had written a spin off series, called Angels of the Dark, I was more than happy a start to what looks to be a great new series.

A few angels have popped up in her Lords of the Underworld series, specifically, Lysander. If you read The Darkest Angel from the Heart of Darkness anthology, then you have a good idea what Zacharel, the angel hero of Wicked Nights is like. Zacharel has the same mind set as Lysander. He’s cold, calculating, has a massive ego and refuses to feel any real emotion. He’s in charge of an army of angels who have angered the Deity, a type of spirit or god they all follow. These angels are all rejects, and Zacharel is in charge of keeping them in line while they battle the demons of the underworld that cause havoc on Earth. Zacharel’s angel warriors are a bloodthirsty group and they don’t care if there are human casualties. Zacharel does care because his Deity takes it out on his hide, literally, if any angels kill innocent humans while taking down demons.

During the latest battle on Earth, Zacharel ends up at a mental institutional for the criminally insane. For some reason the demons want to get inside. When Zacharel enters the building, he comes in contact with a drugged woman tied down to a gurney. He thinks nothing of her until he notices the demons want to hurt her. She’s Annabelle, who was found guilty of murdering her parents when she was eighteen. Annabelle sees demons everywhere. They stalk her because she has been claimed by a powerful demon. She has no idea how or why this has happened. Zacharel decides to take her up to heaven and keep her safe in his cloud until he can figure out why Annabelle has been marked. Soon enough Annabelle breaks through his defenses and he starts developing feelings for her. He doesn’t know why he enjoys being with Annabelle and helps her train in defending herself, including the way his body responds to her. He’s confused and worried that if his feelings continue to grow for Annabelle, his Deity may punish him. But Zacharel can’t stop wanting Annabelle, and while she teaches him about love and trust, he in turn teaches her to fight back. Together they join forces and soon their lessons become passionate and all consuming where Zacharel will move heaven and earth to claim his Anna forever.

Wicked Nights is wicked awesome. Gena continually gets better with every book she writes. Annabelle is fierce, strong, no weeping hides in the corner, TSTL heroine. She fights back with everything inside of her. Her strength is what attracts Zacharel to her. Watching him fall for Anna is beyond delicious. Zacharel has never felt passion ever in the thousands of years he’s lived. Annabelle reaches deep inside of him and makes his heart beat, as well as bleed for her. Also Zacharel is a virgin (loves me some virgin heroes) and those scenes where he and Annabelle engage in heavy make our sessions and foreplay are full of sexy erotic fun.

I also love the idea of Zacharel’s home being a cloud that will grant you anything you want. This was shown in The Darkest Angel and Annabelle makes good use of Zacharel’s cloud. Can I have my own cloud with a side of Zacharel, please?

Wicked Nights is a total winning read for me and cements my belief that Gena Showalter is one of the best authors out there writing addicting paranormal romance. Do yourself a favor and read Wicked Nights ASAP. It’s one book you’ll not only read once and sigh over, but end up re-reading many times over.(less)

He definitely didn't let me down and I thought he was a good start to the series as the leader of his very own band of warriors. I liked the idea that he's the leader of basically the bad-boy-misfit angels. That would be who Gena's readers would want to read about. *wink* lol

I can already tell it's going to be a fun series. However, as the first book in the series it wasn't a book that I loved as much as I love the LOTU books. But, I think that's a lot because it is the first book in the series. I'm not giddy at getting glimpses of my fav angels yet because I just met them. So I think as the books progress I could easily become just as attached to these guys as the LOTU guys. I'm particularly intrigued by the relationship between Thane, Bjorn, and Xerxes, which seems to be quite a complex bond that I'm so curious about!

When it comes to the relationship between Zacharel and Annabelle, I thought it was sweet for the most part. Annabelle has had a very rough and abusive past and so it was rough going for them in the beginning, but I thought it was handled pretty well given those circumstances. However, I did think that Zacharel fell for Annabelle a little too easily. I mean, he's been celibate for like a thousand years or something thereabouts, right? What about her made him want to break that so quickly? I get that she was "meant" for him, but I wish there had been a little bit more time before he started falling all out for her to make it more realistic.

Overall though it was a good book and I'm looking forward to getting to know these angels-gone-almost-rogue a little more in the coming books. I definitely recommend it for Lords of the Underworld fans because it's Gena doing what Gena does best -- hot n' sexy warrior males gone wild with love for their leading ladies! ;)

I'll be honest, I was disappointed in this book on a lot of levels. Showalter is not my favorite romance author by any means, though she has her moments. I LOVE Anya and the Harpies in Lords of the Underworld (in fact, my favorite scenes in Wicked Nights were their cameos). I often call LotU the 'poor man's BDB.' LOL

Alright, so to say I was excited to finally get to read this book is an understatement. I absolutely adore Gena’s books and count them amongst my faves. There’s nothing of hers I’m yet to read that I haven’t loved and devoured and I find that her writing never fails to entertain and her stories to enthral. Wicked Nights kick-starts Showalter’s new Lords of the Underworld spin-off series feathering some of the angels seen in LOTU and others we’ve yet to meet.

As with her LOTU series, her characters are tormented and somewhat broken, with harsh, painful pasts; all shrouded in mystery and secrets. While this novel does feature cold, emotionless leader Zacharel and his lady love, Annabelle as our main characters, we are also introduced to the other rugged angels that make up his army. Thane, Xerxes, Bjorn, Kolodo, and the female Jamila are standouts and feature Showalter’s trademark anguish and misery and are clearly haunted individuals all with unique back stories that are yet to be told. The small glimpses that we have of them throughout the book already point to strong, powerful stories of their own, as seen with the Lords of the Underworld books and I for one cannot wait to learn of their lives.

Our main hero in Wicked Nights is Zacharel, the strong, but emotionless angel we first met in LOTU. Finally allowing him to have is own tale in Angels of the Dark, Showalter tells of his guilt and pain at the loss of this brother and the events that fuel his actions now, along with the choices that will ultimately be his salvation or destruction. Zacharel is far from perfect. Even throughout this book his makes mistakes as he learns of his feelings for Annabelle and what it means for him. Actually feeling and desiring is new for him and while instinct rules him for the most part, he’s not without his faults and bad choices. And I liked this. It’s always lovely to see a character such as Zacharel learn and grow so much.

One of the best parts of the novel was our heroine Annabelle. While I did love Zachie, Annabelle is the kind of power-rocket heroine I’ve come to love from Gena, with all the flair, vulnerably and strength I adore. Having witnessed her parent’s deaths and then having been blamed for the, the attitude she took during her horrific incarceration managed to keep her going. So many people would have given up, but Annabelle fought the demons constantly and even the atrocious humans who thought to harm her. It’s amazing that she managed to remain so unbroken aside from some understandable trust issues and fear when men were concerned.

In typical Gena Showalter fashion, this book is action and danger packed while also featuring the romance and sensual love scenes you expect from one of her passionate books. From beginning to end this is an enjoyable read that every PRN should give a go. As the first book in the Angels of the Dark series, and even though it features no horrible cliff-hanger ending, Wicked Nights left me desperately craving the next story and eager to devour the entire series! Always a fan of anything from Gena Showalter, Wicked Nights did not disappoint! Angels of the Dark had a whole new feeling to it then what we usually find in Gena’s Lords of the Underworld series, a lot darker and more descriptive. You’ll recognize the main character and leader of the rebel warrior angel army, Zacharel from the past few books if you’re a fan of the Lords of the Underworld series. But if you have yet to pick up a LOTU book (I’ll be nice and not hit you over the head with my Stridey) have no worries because Angels of the Dark can more then stand on its on feet as a separate series.

I loved delving into Zacharel’s character. From the LOTU books he seemed incapable of emotion, cold just like the snow that falls from his wings. But in Wicked Nights we learn that this emotionless state stems from the death of his brother and the snow on his wings is punishment for letting a human die in the crosshairs of a battle. Annabelle balances Zacharel’s serious side out superbly and their dialogue together adds some wicked humor to this dark and gritty story line, especially how Zacharel has the tendency to take everything Annabelle says literally. Annabelle was a captivating heroine as well, feisty and strong despite being a mere human. She has many demons to fight, quite literally, and isn’t afraid to face them head on.

Gena’s writing flows from the pages with intriguing characters and in-depth world building that makes the story fall into place and defines the series as a whole. Heart-stopping twists are woven into this Angels vs. Demons adventure that will keep you turning the pages for more.

LOTU fans will not be disappointed as several cameos are weaved into the story. However I did find in Wicked Nights that, though the passion was there, it was slow to develop and lacked the intense sexual spark that I’ve come to expect from Gena’s works.
All in all, another amazing read from author Gena Showalter and I can’t wait to get my hands on more of these sexy angels. I think I’ve found a new addiction! If you're a fan of paranormal romance then you simply must pick up Wicked Nights today!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I have been a fan of Showalter for some time now and firmly believe that her writing has improved with each book. I noticed this in her last release, THE DARKEST SEDUCTION, but in WICKED NIGHTS, Showalter really shows her strength and growth as a writer. Her writing has become more descriptive, more tighter and the proof is in the pages. Gena has been working her butt off and you can totally see the improvements in each subsequent book.

Probably the biggest reason I loved this book is because I adored the hero and heroine. Zacharel is a virgin – need I say more? And Annabelle is a woman who has faced a tough life, but doesn’t allow her past hurts to haunt her. I adored her spunk and fiery spirit and added to Zacharel’s more serious side results in some hilarious dialogue. Here, case in point:

Annabelle alternately marveled at the change in him and at the luminosity of the full moon. Other humans gave him a wide berth, nearly flattening themselves against the building walls to widen the distance between them. Annabelle danced around him, grinning. “Can I just say what a bad boy you are right now?”
“Of course you can. You just did.”
“No, I mean – Oh, never mind, you spoiled it. “ Her lips dipped into a pout.

Zacharel is adorable!

While I thought the book lacked the thread that should have pulled the plot forward, I found that I really enjoyed the ending. Showalter pulls a little twist at the ending that I really enjoyed and it really stirred the pot up! For fans of the LOTU, there are a lot of cameos in this book. You’ll be happy to note that Paris and Lucien and some of the women and more make regular appearances. It was hilarious to read Annabelle’s reaction to Paris’ hotness.

Now I am jonesing for a taste of Koldo and Xerxes. Out of all the other angels, they stood out to me the most. If Showalter continues to write like this for her next books, there is no doubt that the Angels of the Dark series will be just as successful as the Lords of the Underworld. Watch out now, Lords ‘cause the Angels have arrived!

Anabelle has been imprisoned in a mental institution for four years, for murdering her parents but she is innocent, a demon killed them in front of her, but who would possibly believe that story? She is used to seeing demons and monsters in the institution, they come to her constantly and she is so tired of fighting all the time. So when a beautiful angel called Zacharel shows up to rescue her, she can't quite believe her luck!

Zacharel is the leader of an army of dark angels that are all as beautifully broken as each other, they are on the verge of falling forever if they don't try and chance their wicked ways. He has no feelings, he is emotionless but when he claps eyes on Annabelle he gets the first stirrings of emotion for the first time in his long life. Annabelle has been marked by a demon, so demons track her everywhere she goes, Zacharel is her only hope of staying alive, but he is one tough guy to try and get along with. The pair are drawn to each other, but can they manage to save each other along the way?

The ending is fabulous, it is full of little twists, turns and is jam-packed with kick-butt action, just the way I like it! I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book in this amazing new series as I am missing this brilliantly intriguing new set of characters already! I am now really, really looking to get my hands on and start the Lords of The Underworld series too!

As punishment, his Deity has tasked him with leading a group of misfit outcast angels who are also in danger of falling due their lack of sympathy and care towards humanity. They are now tasked with protecting humanity against demon attacks. If a one of the Angels kills a human during the battle, Zacharel is severely punished for it. If Zacharel can't get his army to listen and follow his lead, they are all in danger of falling together. Only problem is, Zacharel thinks the same way as his Angels and cares not for humans. Annabelle, the heroine of the book has endured many horrors. Only Annabelle knows that demons are the ones that attacked her family on her 18th birthday, and that's because she's the only one that can see demons. She has spent the last 4 years of her life abandoned by her remaining family and friends because they believe she committed the crime. She has endured horrible abuse at the hands of the doctors and staff at the hospital and from the constant attacks on her by the demons, but her spirit and will to live never die. She fights with all that she has left and that's what make Annabelle a kick-ass heroine. She does not wine or cry. She always fights and never gives up hope.

Zacharel and Annabelle together are the perfect combination for the two balance each other. Zacharel has never felt much emotion and has never felt desire. Annabelle has an amazing survival instinct and her will to never give up despite the odds, impresses Zacharel. Zacahrel makes Annabelle feel safe and protected which is what she needs most right now. Being that Annabelle faced some sexual abuse in the asylum, their getting together sexually was slow in process but, the chemistry between the two throughout the book was electrifying.

I am also intrigued by all of the other Angels in Zacharel's army. I am looking forward to Koldo's book which is scheduled to be released in February 2013. And I can't wait to learn more about these tortured Angles.

If you're a fan of the LORDS OF THE UNDERWORLD series you will be happy to know that Paris and a few of the other Lords make an appearance to help Zacharel, along with some of their mates.

Wicked Nights is a dark paranormal romance with all of the awesomeness that Gena puts into every book. It has strong alpha heroes, kick-ass heroines, smokin' hot romance, secondary characters that will leave you clamoring for the release of their books and a crazy twist of an ending that leaves you with your mouth hanging open.

Gena amazes me in how she has written so many books and they never get dull or boring. EVERY book is better than the last and she blows me away with every book she writes. She never disappoints me and I can't wait for the next installment of the ANGELS OF THE DARK.

I suppose I should be suprised that she'd able to produce so many amazing novels, but I'm not. Showalter is stunningly talented!

This novel had me hooked from page 1. The fact that our heroine had such an interesting back story really added to her appeal. I like that she was strong and brave, a fighter, even though she had such a damaging past.

I love the set up for the series. Zacharel has been given the task of commanding an army of misfit Angels that no one else will work with and who are seriously working their last chance. They've got to prove themselves trustworthy again by carrying out missions to protect humans from evil but one more screw up and these fierce warriors will lose their wings forever. Gah. So good! I LOVE a dark Angel. You just know there's going to be some delicious attitude and drama going on. Even better when their mission brings a demon plagued human into their lives and their leader, who has absolutely no use for humans, can't seem to walk away from her or the evil that's determined to ruin her life.

I really liked Annabelle and Zacharel both as a couple and individually. As a heroine Annabelle was wonderful. Life has seriously smacked her around but she's a total fighter and rolls with the punches. She's sarcastic, determined and refuses to give up. Since I haven't read LOTU I didn't really know what to expect from Zacharel but I absolutely love him. He's arrogant, emotionless, hardened and tough, can be scary as hell and is brutally honest. [Yeah, I know he sounds like an utter jerk but he's a fantastic one I swear!] He's been denied so many experiences during his life that he almost has an innocence about him (waaaayyyy under that tough exterior) that so got to me.

Loved the chemistry and heat between the two and how they worked as a couple even if there were some bumps along the way. It was amazing to watch Annabelle crack his cold exterior and bring out his emotions and lovely to see Zachie's respect for her grow over time. One thing I appreciated about the writing was that even though things were extremely dangerous for them as they battled Annabelle's tormentors there was still a good bit of humor between the two that kept things from feeling too dark and heavy.

Wicked Nights was a fantastic start to a new series. It's dark, gritty and the perfect mix of heart pounding action, sarcastic humor and a wonderfully satisfying love story. All of the support characters, with their bad attitudes and dark passions, were nicely used and left me so damn curious about their stories and eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.(less)

Luck for her Zacharel knows the deal, and helping her may be his last chance at redemption lest he lose his wings forever.

This is the first book in the spin-off of the Lords of the Underworld series. Admittedly I have not yet read those novels, but this book seems to stand on its own just fine. The world building is great and the development of the pair is well done, making it easy to root for them. Zacharel is the epitome of arrogant and self-absorbed. He is a fierce fighter, but seeing as the only love he's ever known was in the platonic sense towards his brother, his growing feelings for Annabelle present new territory to him.

It feels like young love at times which is something I don't see all that often in PNR, so it was a little refreshing. Their awkward moments and banter are entertaining, but there's also a fair amount of action to keep the book from being overly sappy. Annabelle doesn't want to be a damsel or a victim, so I found her to be admirable at times.

One of my favorite aspects was reading about the angels' typical living quarters. The can live on the ground, but they can also live in the clouds, literally, and I felt like Showalter put this to good use. I enjoyed the scenes there just to see what she could cook up.

The final villain came as no surprise to me, and neither did the ending of the book. But I wasn't really anticipating too many crazy twists. You don't always need that for a good read.

I like the writing, so I think I will continue to follow this series as well as eventually read her Lords of the Underworld series in due time. Perhaps in 2013. I don't know if this is the right book for every PNR fan since it isn't too heavy on the sexual content (with a few tweaks this could probably be classified as Urban Fantasy), but as someone to generally prefers UF to PNF, it worked for me.

Zacharel’s appearance in “The Darkest Seduction” really intrigued me to read his story. I pre-ordered his book in January, and after months of waiting, I was looking forward to knowing "ultracold" Zacharel's behaviour in romantic situations...

Annabelle is a tortured heroine. She’s spent a large chunk of her life in an asylum after a demon brutally murdered her parents in front of her, but because nobody believed her, she was accused of the crime herself. Taken advantage of at every turn and rejected by those tasked with taking care of her and her family she’s becomed hardened but is thrown into a world of feeling when she meets Zacharel and his flock.

The two together are magnetic. Zacharel is an angel who has never felt much of any emotion, let alone desire. When he meets strong willed Annabelle and is faced with her instense survival instinct, he can’t help but warm to her. Not to mention the passion that is undeniable between the two.

LORDS OF THE UNDERWORLD fans will rejoice in a cameo by our favorite demon infected alpha males and a few of their feisty females, and have no fear… while this series doesn’t have the light moments that LOTU has (at least not yet), you will still get your sexy alpha males, strong females, steamy romance, and all of the intrigue we’ve come to expect and love from Gena. You’ll also encounter a multitude of other secondary characters that you will want to know more about instantly, which is brilliant for a serial author, because it just makes us want the next installment that much more.

The world is dark, engaging, open for intense growth, and steeped in deep philosophical undertones that I found utterly fascinating.

LITERAL ADDICTION gives “Wicked Nights” 4 ½ Skulls. I can’t wait to see which angel we’ll learn more about next. There’s a trio that I’m dying to delve into pronto. ;-)
