Mr. and Mrs. Deer didn't have a baby to "love and cuddle and read stories to". But they wanted one. Then one day there was a basket with a baby on their doorstep. They were so excited. When they didn't know what to do with the baby they called Uncle Duncan (an owl), Auntie Agnes (a bunny), and Dr. Fox (a fox) come to help the animals mysteriously disappear. One more phone call later Granny Bear (you guessed it, a bear) comes to help burp the baby. Once Uncle Duncan, Auntie Agnes, and Dr. Fox are...more

It's been a long while since my last review but this title prompted me to submit one. The girls and I truly delight in a twisted tale for children bordering on the edge (think Emily Gravett). In this story, Mr. and Mrs. Deer long for a baby. When one shows up on their doorstep, Mr. Deer deems it a bit "peculiar". Mrs. Deer is smitten. The baby has a unique "roar!". Then characters who they call on to help figure out what the baby needs begin to disappear. Children will laugh at the ending, just...more

Mr. and Mrs. Deer really want a baby and one day they find one on their doorstep. The baby keeps roaring and they can't figure out what it needs so they bring in different people to help feed him and change him. Those people keep disappearing and the baby keeps roaring. Finally, Granny Bear decides he needs to be burped and are they ever surprised what happens!

There is enough gross humor in this story to satisfy any little kid. The monster baby is cute and fun and Mr. and Mrs. Deer are nice and...more

A deer couple can't resist an abandoned baby whose note requests "I am a dear little baby. please love me and cuddle me and read me lots of stories". However the little antlered creature won't stop roaring. Various friends and family try to sort out the "dear little baby", but they all mysteriously disappear. Granny Bear sorts the problem with her burping cure, and the mystery of the baby's identity is solved! A fun story with funny illustrations.

This was just gross and a little weird. It had a "Fat Cat: A Danish Folktale" feel to it. Mr and Mrs Deer don't have children and a baby is left at their doorstep. It says 'I am a dear little baby. Please love me and cuddle me and read me lots of lots of stories. " Hum, their Auntie Agnes and Dr. Fox and a bunch of other all disappear. Where do all the care givers go??? Well when they are all vomited out you KNOW where they have been!

I read this book with my six year old and 2 year old. They loved it. For a childrens book, it has bold pictures and easy to enjoy language for toddlers, and enough clues and situational humor for a kindergarten student. For example, my 2 year old loved yelling "ROAR" with the monster. My six year old thought it was hilarious that all the helpers kept disappearing whenever they wanted to help with the baby.

this is pretty awesome storytime book to read aloud. Its a fun story about a deer couple who receive a baby... something. They ask their friends for help along the way, but their friends keep disappearing when they meet the baby. What is happening in the deer house? Read and roar to find out!
Goes well with Leonardo the Terrible Monster for a monster themed storytime.

Mr and Mrs Deer want a baby and one day, they find a bundle on their doorstep. The bundle has a note attached which says “I am a dear little baby. Please love me and cuddle me and read me lots and lots of stories. Mr and Mrs Deer try to do everything right but it turns out that the baby isn’t a baby at all—it’s a monster. Cute.

What a marvelously weird little book. I really thought I knew where it was going at one point, and then it completely surprised me, which is nice! Nonetheless, I didn’t totally love it–a little too quirky, maybe? Not sure. Regardless, it’s a fun book and I think would make a great readaloud.

Well, now. That's just not right. Childless woodland creature couple finds cute monster baby that eats their family, burps them up and is then traded in for a kitten. Nice. The one star is for the illustrations and the fact that it's a picture book that includes the phrase "special ointment."

This is really funny! It's about a Deer couple that finds a baby on their doorstep, only this baby is not what it seems. This book is full of vibrant illustrations that make it perfect for story time. It would be perfect for a Halloween or scary story time.

Very clever and I think kids will love being on the inside of discovering the truth about this new baby that appears on Mr. and Mrs Deer's doorstep! Love the ending as well, again I think kids will be delighted to figure it out!

Fun in an edgy way. Some might find it gross and a bit weird. I thought it was hilarious. If you would read "My Little Sister Ate One Hare" and "Bark George" to your audience, this might be a great one for you!

When a little bundle appears on the Deer's doorstep, Mrs. Deer thinks her wish for a baby has come true while Mr. Deer is more wary, but the little one will not stop roaring and those who try to help keep disappearing.

Grades Pre-K to 2. When a baby is left on Mr and Mrs Deer's doorstep, they decide to take care of it-- but they aren't quite sure how. A cute twist reveals that the dear baby is actually a little monster. Really.

This was too scarey for Natalie. I could see her face looking concerned when I explained that the baby might have eaten the owl. She was too young to find it funny or clever.

This one is a bit strange. Did anyone else think the "kitten" at the end of the book looked like a disguised monster? Maybe that's the point?!

OK- this is not a book for lower elementary. But, if you are reading to a group of 5th-6th graders, that need a good laugh, this book is awesome.

Hilarious picture book of Mr. and Mrs. Deer and their lovely new baby. So silly and the ending will have everyone bursting out in giggles.
Lynn
Loved this silly book! What a hoot - and probably best for the slightly older set ;-) An anecdote for sugary picture books.
Rachel
Quite funny, with the pictures adding to the story giving us the information needed about the baby to understand who he is.
Molly
Just the sick sort of humor that I love. Like it. I think K-1 will like it.

Love it! The monster is just so cute.
Amanda
Enjoyed the artwork right up until the burp, then it was a bit...graphic. Kids thought it was so funny.
