This book is luminous green. Even the edges of the pages are luminous green. It looks like a Yellow Pages although is smaller and not yellow. It's just the sort of thing that would appeal to the young male readers it is intended for. Just flicking through the pages too there are pictures of the goblins poking their heads or a limb onto the edges of some of the pages inside further keeping the attention.
But they say don't judge a book by its cover so let me review the actual story too. I thought...more

It EXISTS. I found it! Six months searching, and I finally found the perfect fantasy children's book.
To begin with, the book is such a lovely shade of green. Even the edges of the pages are green. Scoff all you want, it's a delightful detail.
And then there's the story itself. Scarper is an adorable goblin, and Henywn and the others are proper three dimensional characters. The storyline is great, full of adventures and dangerous evil creatures and old magic, happy crazy mad things that are fun t...more

Reeve, Philip. Goblins. London: Marion Lloyd Books, 2012. Print.
It has been years since the powerful Lynch Lord ruled from the heights of Clovenstone's Keep. Magic once saturated the lands, but only a little of its power remains. The grounds around the keep are now in shambles and the goblins that once served the terrible wizard now spend their days killing and stealing from men and eachother. But Skarper, a young hatchling, is not like the rest of the goblins--he is much smarter. A little too...more

I think this is a very wonderful story. Yes this is for children, and the story is pretty much basic. But I can't help thinking that It feels like watching a new Disney movie, a good one (and of course I do think this is potentially can be made into a great Disney movie). There's so much good things to learn for the kids, and it has this kind of naive enthusiasm that defined me when I was a small kid, so it's kinda nice to feel nostalgic about that. So yeah, pick it up; it won't take much time,...more
A new book from Philip Reeve is always something to be excited about. For me, he is on a par with Tolkien or Pratchett. The Mortal Engines quartet, its prequel, Fever Crumb series and the magnificent Larklight trilogy are amongst my favourite books, as is Here Lies Arthur. So I was expecting very good things from Goblins.
For the most part, I was not disappointed. The book is a very humorous and imaginative tale, lovely characters, the lead, Scarper the goblin, is particularly good; an element of...more

Goblins - Loved the storyline, it's inventive without being cliched. Main characters are flawed, human even. The limelight is shared amongst 3 friends. It's humourous in places and has enough twists to keep a young reader engrossed. There's a few morals at the end, but this isn't overly stated, rather matter of fact.
A really smart, funny spin on the usual fantasy quest tropes; Henwyn, a young man of humble background, sets off to rescue Princess Ned from the giant Fraddon who abducted her only to find that all is not what it seems...
He must journey to the ruins of Clovenstone Keep, a site of ancient evil which is now home to tribes of goblins - where he meets Skarper, smaller, smarter and less brutish than his goblin kin. They become embroiled in fighting off the old, evil magic that is rising again...

Very surprised! Didn't know whether I'd like this or not, but it was quite brilliant.
