"Come from the Shadows" is not about the Afghanistan we may think we know. It is not about the country depicted in urgent dispatches from embedded reporters; it isn't about the country evoked by anti-war protestors or the one that figures in heated political controversies over the treatment of prisoners. Instead, this is a book about the Afghanistan that lies outside the w ...more

Vital contribution to clear-thinking on Afghanistan! Terry Glavin exposes the mythology about Afghanistan, or the place created in popular imagination he calls "Absurdistan." Instead he focuses on key aspects of the "real" Afghanistan that rarely get any stage time, giving faces and names to a few of the countless every-day heroes of Afghanistan, such as Afghan activists for democracy, women's rights, and education. highly recommend for anyone interested in Afghanistan or r2p in general.

should be mandatory reading for anyone who has ever chanted, argued, or demanded that NATO or their country pull troops out of Afghanistan.

not the best writing style and a bit meandering at times, but this book is such an optimistic look at the "real" Afghanistan and presents the raw and nuanced conscience of a realist and intellectually honest self-proclaimed liberal.

The Canadian lefty journalist Glavin has dedicated himself to keeping Afghanistan free of the Taliban, by good work, by supporting the Canadian and even US forces at war there, and telling the truth. He is intimate with the men and women of the country and a relentless truth-teller and hero, and as such a complete pariah among English-speaking lefties. A good introduction to the completely winnable struggle in Afghanistan, a demolition of the BS - "grave of empires," "wants NATO out," US created ...more
