America stands at a precipice; limitless consumption, reckless economics, and disregard for the environment have put the country on a collision course with disaster. It's up to a younger generation to rebuild according to new forms of organization, and Share or Die is a collection of messages from the front lines.

From urban Detroit to central Amsterdam, and from worker co-...more

Share or Die is a new book edited by Neil Gorenflo, of The Abundance League and Shareable magazine. It is a set of stories about modern life in a stagnant economy and various ways the rising generation is creatively adapting with methods that build community and repel corporate deadening.

Cory Doctorow starts off by noting that while the press is full of panic stories about how the Internet isolates us and makes us shun human contact in return for “likes” and “pokes” and “tweets,” they may have m...more

This is really three books in one. "Share or Die" is the theme of several essays in the book, and you will find inspirational stories about how people pool resources, from housing to knowledge, in order to live better than they would otherwise. You'll also find how-to tips about educating yourself, choosing a roommate wisely, and starting worker co-ops and housing co-ops. Implicit in these essays is a critique of consumption as a lifestyle and of capitalism as a system that demands consumption t...more

In the introduction to this collection of essays, articles, and a few comics, Cory Doctorow says that "There's a lot of anger and disillusionment in this book, and there's some blind optimism and more than a little naivete." I thinks this sums this book up well. The central theme is the need to create a future with more sharing and cooperation, and the articles range from ideas for dinner and housing sharing, to rebuilding communities in Detroit, to traveling the world, to what happens when you...more

I won this book on Goodreads First Read and what a wonderful book. A compilation of stories from people living their own versions of their own dreams. Inspirational, beautifully honest, brutally opinionated, and a must read for anyone wondering why they forgot how to be happy, while struggling to make it in the modern world, with the economy as it is. Although I think it is primarily directed toward those in their twenties, I think it works for anyone at all, regardless of their age, their aspir...more

A must-read if you give a damn.
Would like to see a follow-up comprised of stories from Gen Yers/Millennials that have been weathering the recession, who come from different demographics (especially non-college educated).

I thought that this book was a very good, informative book. While slightly depressing in some respects, in other respects it was very optimistic and hopeful. "Share or Die" tell a story about surviving today as a young adult. The book talks about college, co-ops, helpful websites, all revolving around the idea of sharing. Great read! I suggest everyone reads this.

I won this on First Reads.

This is a collection of stories that illustrate the point that we as a people tend to have a mindset to follow along like sheep. We are told this is the way to do it and more often than not, most people just go along. I enjoyed reading it and agreeing with some of it and learning some new ideas. Thank you, I will be sharing this one!
