Much earlier Verdi, it is much easier to like than Otello. One can enter into this experience expecting lyricism (granted the singers are lyric). The arias for all the main roles are well constructed, but difficult sings. The lyricism eventually ends in tragedy, typical of opera- but a tragedy in opera leaves me moved and wanting to see it again.
