A lot of material is covered in this book, setting up the world and the pasts of both Hunter and Christian, but I felt it was done deftly without coming across as “sit down and let me fill you in”. A lot of material is covered in this book, setting up the world and the pasts of both Hunter and Christian, but I felt it was done deftly without coming across as “sit down and let me fill you in”. This is set in a today’s world, but with people who have special skills, predominantly it seems in the psychic realm, but some people such as Hunter have others. He’s a pyrokinetic, he can light fires at will. He now works for an organization who finds other new psychics, usually teens, and takes them to a special school where they can hone their skills, as most people still freak out when they find their child with powers. There is also a dark side, who wants to get these people for use in criminal activities. Hunter goes in and gets the kids out or finds them before the bad guys.

The book starts with a bang, literally, as Hunter has to rescue a young woman whose criminal boyfriend has kept her captive. There are explosions and shooting and running through cornfields, and it sets the scene for the type of work Hunter often gets caught up in. However his next assignment pairs him with Christian. He thinks Christian is hot, but an ice-prince and probably dating the head of the school, so off-limits and also seems to be without any skills. However you don’t disobey the boss, and off they go to find a young pyrokinetic who the boss knows will lose control soon and someone could get injured.

The heat between the two men is smoking, but both think the other dislikes him – or at least is not interested - despite their flirting. It was interesting to see Hunter change his opinion about Christian when he sees him outside of the office and more unbuttoned, as well after he learns Christians power. I enjoyed reading Hunter’s Cajun accent and seeing how it betrayed his emotions at times. It gave you a good feel for him while fleshing him out as a man, perhaps better than Christian who was very reserved. There is a lot happening here, but it was kind of like a wild adventure movie, it’s not meant to have lots of time to sit around and ponder life and relationships, they are trying to find these kids (or young adults) before they kill someone either accidentally or on purpose, before the bad guys do. So I was okay with it seeming pretty action packed, that’s the point.

There does seem to be a set-up for more books. I think it would be interesting to see Hunter and Christian working together to find kids. I would like to get more background about the bad guys and see it more of an us vs them series with Hunter and Christian as the good guys, rather than Hunter vs Christian with the relationship as the centre. So for those who like everything wrapped up tidy at the end, perhaps not for you. Sure, Hunter and Christian get together, but it’s on the beginning and the world building was interesting enough to me to want to dig deeper. On the whole I was pretty content with the story as it was and enjoyed it.(less)

I liked this book. Even though it is a very short story I think the author managed to present and let us know the two main characters and some of the psi-world. Of course I wish it was a little longer, both because I want to read more about Hunter and Christan and I want the world to be developed a little more.

The Heat Is On is a short novella in which a paranormal world is presented like it’s the start of a new series. I haven’t been able to find information about that, so I don’t know if it’s really the start of a new series, but it does feel like it. I definitely would be interested in more stories set in this world. For now, I’ve read it as a standalone story.

We meet two men in The Heat Is On who both work for some sort of agency, The Claremont Foundation. All employees of the Foundation are psychics with a variety of gifts (telekinetic, pyrokinetic, pre-cognitive, etc) who are trained to find, help and place other psychics where they can use their abilities without fear or harm. The two men, Hunter Babineaux and Christian VanValkenburgh, are sent together on a mission to find a pyrokinetic kid, who has just discovered his ability to set things on fire but can’t control it yet, so he’s becoming an explosive fire hazard for his surroundings.
Hunter is a pyrokinetic himself, and Christian has the rare ability to cancel out other psychic activity. Hunter and Christian have never been on a mission together before and they are like fire and ice – on first appearance. They turn out to be highly attracted to one another, while they always were under the impression the other one disliked them. Sharing a hotel room together brings out their more deeper feelings and they soon burn up the sheets, which makes for some very hot scenes. We get both their points of view, so their feelings are right there on the surface for the reader, while the heroes are kept in the dark a little longer.

As said, along with this sexy and romantic plot-line we get an investigation angle as well: the search for the boy. This second plot-line is helped forward pretty swiftly by some convenient coincidences which make that the heroes find the boy rather fast and are able to ‘solve the case’ to everybody’s satisfaction. Both story arcs move ahead a bit too efficiently rapid, but given the number of pages this novella counts it’s not surprising. Nevertheless, I would’ve liked the story to be more elaborate to give it more depth in both the world building as the romantic developments. As it is, it packs quite some interesting details and a lot of promise for a few more tales set in this world. However, as a standalone story, it is *just* an entertaining, fast and light read. One that is worth to be picked up for sure, but one that will make you crave for more at the same time.

3.5 stars Short story with loads of sexual tension as our two MC's fight their mutual attraction. A pyrokinetic (Hunter) and a psi-negative (Christian) are forced to team up to retrieve a young gifted child. But neither of them realise their feelings are reciprocated. Shame this story isn't a bit longer.:(

Oh man I really wanted to love this cause I love X-Men and stuff but this… I think it was just too short and undeveloped. You don’t really get to know much world/powers/relationship wise. Maybe too much word count was spent on all the fantasy sex and day dreams but this was just a so-so read for me
