Most of the characters simply fell flat, but Kira was difficult to like and I never completely came around to her. What was there for me to like? Thieves who act entitled to what they stole are not fun to read about, nor do I care to read about characters who come off as terrible friends but seem like they're supposed to be seen as good friends. Everything is so convenient for her, almost to the point of becoming a deus ex machina, that it robs all obstacles in her way of conflict.

Even after finishing the novel and thinking it over, I lack an understanding of what drew Kira and Tristan together in the first place or what they see in each other. The grand, genuine connection they're supposed to have feels more like insta-love. One of the grand flaws of the novel is its lack of genuine connections between any of the characters. I didn't believe for a second Kira was truly friends with any of her "friends" and I felt the same way about her relationship with her family.

I'll cut to the chase: In regards to the writing, this is an insult, not a book. When I read a novel, I expect it to demonstrate a mastery of basic grammar, word usage, and punctuation in whatever language I'm reading it in. This is supposed to be a final copy of Ignite, meaning it should be the absolute best it can be, but there is nothing that can convince me anything more than the bare minimum effort required was put into this novel. Being self-published is no excuse. If I were an editor, I would never take something of this quality. Cheating at narration, horrible syntax, overly blatant foreshadowing,... It hits all my pet peeves at a reader.

Ignite follows the same basic YA paranormal romance formula and feels heavily derivative of more popular works. I've seen a lot of formulaic YA around; I'm not much for such books anyway, but at least most of them have a feeling of life to them, like someone really believed in that story. For all the forbidden romance and conflict Kira is supposed to have, I felt no life or passion from it. It does try to be a little original at times and that is appreciated, but they aren't necessarily good tries. The "channeling the sun" business still makes me spare a giggle or two when I think about it.

One of the problems with formulaic YA is that the same problematic elements tend to carry over without comment or examination and I'm sad to say that problem happens here too. Some of Tristan's behavior comes off as creepy, mean, and downright scary, but he is supposed to be attractive. I do not find it sexy or remotely appealing when the love interest creeps me out and the main character openly admits he is scaring her. Romanticizing such behavior is one thing I wish YA could stop doing.

This is a small secret of mine, but vampire novels have an advantage with me as a reader. I survived the flood of vampire YA in recent years and still love the monsters of the night dearly. Not only am I a big vampire fan, I'm a nostalgic one too--remind me of one of two kinds of vampires and you have me. Even with a handicap in its favor, Ignite failed to win me due to its lack of genuine connections between characters, formulaic and derivative storyline, and the apparent lack of effort put into it. When I pay for a book, I expect to read a book, not a first draft.(less)

I'm really glad IGNITE was only $.99, because that's really all it's worth.

The reason I didn't like IGNITE wasn't because of the characters. I didn't care about them that much, but I didn't hate them to infinity and beyond and want to blow all their heads off with an AK-47. It wasn't because of the plot, either. It rolled right along at a decent pace, though much of it was about the romance. It wasn't because of the length -- not too long, not too short.

I'm so grateful for Epilogues at the end of books - because Holy COW that was a bad place to end the book – but the Epilogue helped a lot  it’s also a GREAT way to look forward to the next one :) Can't wait now!

It's awesome to read about - Ok in the beginning we met Kira - she is home now in Charleston because her father was laid off from work and couldn't afford boarding school in New York anymore - she was ok with that. She loved her family and loved to be close to them, so she agreed to go to her senior year of high school at home.

When she got to the school, she got her schedule and walked out of the office door ready to conquer her day - looking for some sign to tell her where her first class was, she bumped into a chest "Are you new?" A handsome blond guy with a lanky build was standing behind her looking over her shoulder at her paper. ... He told her his class was next to her, so she started to follow him. "So you are new, right, or have my great looks made you speechless?" " Yeah I'm new, and what good looks? You're so tall I can't even see your face."

The friendship between Luke and Kira is great! I would love to have a friend like him - he is a protector, a big brother and a best friend all in one. He took pitty on her and showed her around. grabbed a hold of her at lunch and introduced her to the other 4 newbie’s in the school that haven't really found their place in the school. But the 5 of them were just happy to be in their own little group.

When Kira's eyes met the Misfits out in the courtyard , something strange happened. But Kira couldn't figure out what it was.
In their next class, Luke was in there with her. And so was the group of Misfits - when Luke was pre-occupied with the girl and 2 of the guys, the 3rd guy's eyes studied Kira - "who are you?" is what he asked... and Kira was trapped in his gaze could only answer her name.

Tristan *sigh* So dreamy, so sexy, so bad boy gotta have him, but know he's going to break my heart anyways but i don't care -

The story is fun, exciting and full of drama! Conduit's vs Vampires - her whole world as she knew it (nice and normal) turned completely upside down, inside out and every other twisted way imaginable - and she only could rely on 2 people to trust - Luke - the Protector, whose sole purpose was to protect people from evil Vampires and teach her about her new life - and Tristan, a Vampire whose sole purpose was to protect Kira from harm -

A girl involved in a triangle with two boys seems to be the norm for a typical Young Adult book these days, partially due to the popularity of the Twilight movies and books. However, because of the book’s description, I was excited to read about a girl who had powers of her own; a heroine who wouldn’t be the typical damsel in distress, but a young female who could hold her own.

However, because of the book’s description, I was excited to read about a girl who had powers of her own; a heroine who wouldn’t be the typical damsel in distress, but a young female who could hold her own.

We’re introduced to Kira Dawson, who’s recently moved to South Carolina after spending years at a boarding school in New York. She meets Luke Bowrey, a fun loving jokester, who she immediately takes a liking to. She and Luke develop a friendship, but it’s obvious that Luke has a bit of a crush on her. However, Kira has eyes for the mysterious Tristan, who makes her feel things she can’t explain. Tristan is pale, with cold icy blue eyes. His bruises seem to heal unbelievably fast and he exhibits supernatural strength. Her new friend Luke has unusual colored eyes, he strongly dislikes Tristan (and his friends), and he’s obviously keeping secrets from Kira. As all three characters get to know one another, secrets are revealed, and we learn that both boys are more than they seem, and that Kira may hold the power to destroy them all.

The plot was interesting and it moved along at a good pace. I never felt that the story was slow or boring. I was pleasantly surprised by the author’s take on vampire lore. It was unique and intriguing, and I wouldn’t mind learning more about her version of vampires. I also wouldn’t mind more exploration into the world of conduits. Conduits are superhuman beings who protect and defend society against vampires. There are two versions. Those who use their power to weaken vampires are known as Protectors. Those who use their powers to kill vampires are known as Punishers. It will be interesting to see how this world of conduits and vampires evolve in future books.

I really wanted to like and connect with the characters, especially Kira, but I found that some of the characters lacked a depth and exploration that is essential for producing dynamic and loveable characters. Kira made me feel a mixture of emotions. On one hand, I felt she handled herself quite well considering the nature of a couple of secrets that were revealed to her. She was by no means a wimp, and readily did what needed to be done in the face of danger and uncertainty. On the other hand, she spent a good portion of the book stalking Tristan, was unbelievably stubborn, and proceeded to fall in love with a “dangerous” boy she had only known for about a month.

Tristan’s characterization was even more problematic. He’s described as a dangerous bad boy on more than one occasion. In reality he was a broody and tortured soul. He spent most of the book making painful facial expressions and telling Kira how they couldn’t be together. I never really felt that Kira, or anyone else for that matter, was in any danger around him. He came across as one-dimensional and as a consequence, I didn’t buy Tristan and Kira’s connection or love for one another.

Luke was a delightfully strong and likeable character. I enjoyed him in the role of an older, fun, witty and protective big brother, even though he was romantically attracted to Kira. He has the potential to grow into a well-rounded character, if he’s allowed to be more than a third wheel in Tristan and Kira’s love affair. More background on Luke and his family in the next book would be greatly appreciated.

Overall, I give Ignite two stars. I had some issues with the main romance, the grammatical and spelling errors, and felt some of the characters fell flat. However, the mystery, magic, and plot twists kept me interested. I would recommend it to those who enjoy paranormal YA romances and vampires.

This book was given to me to read and review. I must say that I was sooooooooo happy that I got on the list in time and was given the opportunity to read this. I loooooooved it! Love the characters!!! The plot is awesome!! Any book that has people fighting for their love and fighting to be together is my kinda book. Loved Kira and Tristan. When I first started reading this book I felt like I was reading fanfic of Twilight. We have a new girl at school, a group of misfits that are vampires and a guy friend (protector) who loves her but she only feels like friends with him. It all felt like Twilight.

Couldn't finish. Couldn't feel connected with kira at all. To me she was whiny and immature. From reading the summary this just sounds like another vampire story with a love triangle....blah!!!

I want creativity! Not another twilight! This is why I hardly read vampire books anymore.

Really wish we could return kindle books, but this was not worth the 99cents I paid for it. Maybe I should have downloaded the preview since I didn't even get that far....oh well now I know to stay clear from this ser...more

Ignite is the story of Kira Dawson, normal teenage girl- or so she thought. Not only is she a super powerful being who can fight vampires in a unique way, she is a forbidden mix of races.

I absolutely love reading vampire books and everyone's different interpretations on which (if any) popular myths are true. I felt by offering us the Conduits - these light bearing protectors- Kaitlyn offered a new and unique glimpse into the vampire /paranormal world. As the story progressed, I felt myself waivering on who I wanted Kira to fall in love with : Luke - the all around good guy and fellow conduit who can help her learn to harness her powers or Tristan- the sweet soul trapped in a vampire body who understands what it feels like to be an outcast, yet can be killed by her very light. Obviously Luke is the easy choice and something in me wants her to pick easy just for once. I think it's because he's such a good guy (not that Tristan isn't) and shouldn't the good guy win once in a while?

Between the brewing love triangle, the search for the truth about her parents and the amazing fights with vampires, I was kept on the edge of my seat for the entire book. It moved along at a good pace and I was frustrated every time I was interrupted for any little need (don't the kids understand I can't feed them when I'm in the middle of a good book?). One thing that I really loved was the ending- while it could have left us completely hanging, waiting impatiently for the next in the series, I felt there was enough closure to be satisfied and not agitated like I can be sometimes. Naturally I was still yearning for the next book, but I felt there was some closure which to me gets an extra gold star ! I'll be back with reviews for the rest of the series as I get them read! Can't wait!

First and foremost, I've been seeing so much distaste for this book and bad reviews and I literally want to tell these people to SHUT UP! Just shut the hell up!

Ignite is the first of its kind and what some have failed to see is the originality in the plot and story development. If you want an un-whiny high school student, go read an NA novel and eat some cake. YA is YA. So what if the character whines or cries? It just makes her so much more REAL.

As much as I hate it when people compare books to Twilight, I really had no choice with this one. The beginning was so parallel I had to check the title and author several times to confirm it was, indeed, not Twilight. Keep in mind that, even though its similar, there are plenty of differences through the rest of the story. I wouldn't have given it four stars for being Twilight's twin. The beginning was so parallel I had to check the title and author several times to confirm it was, indeed, not Twilight. (view spoiler)[ It starts off with Kira starting public school in her home town. She's in her senior year and is the new girl. Of course, that means she is the center of attention she doesn't want. Luke, a really fun guy with a wicked smile (Jacob), sees her lost on her first day and decides to become her personal tour guide. When lunch starts she sits with her new found friend and is quickly taught of the cliques in the lunch room. There are the jocks, the Goths, the cheerleaders, the Cullens... uh, I mean the misfits, and then them. The new kids. Luke, Miles, Emma, Dave, and now Kira. They have all moved into the small town within the last year or so and feel the need to stick together. Well, as they get all friendly with each other, Kira can't help but to notice how the misfits are staring at her. This continues on for the whole week and, though she would like to confront them, Luke assures her they are just that rude to everyone.

One day, Luke and the gang invite Kira to La P- the beach, where they teach her how to surf. She then gets cocky and tries the bigger waves to show off in front of Tristan- the hottest of the misfits. She proceeds to humiliate herself by falling off her board and getting caught in the current. Baywatch's next star saves her life by smacking her awake. Literally. When Kira comes to, she wakes up to the beauty known as Tristan. Kira has a gash on her head that he acts weird about, but helps her anyways. By this time Luke has made his way over and then punches Tristan for touching Kira. Since Kira doesn't know why they hate each other so badly, she is appalled, but recovers and they leave.

Over the next few chapters of the book she hounds Luke for answers and, when she doesn't get anywhere that way, she starts to bug Tristan about it. They quickly bond, of course, because how can this be a great book without instant romance? Oh yeah, not to mention he tried to warn her away from him, so logically she feels the need to get closer. Classic.

In case you don't see where this is going, the misfits are all vampires. What you probably didn't expect is Kira and Luke are werewolves. Ha! Just kidding, they are conduits. That basically means they can channel energy from the sun and burn vampires with it. The flames they conduct are only harmful to vampires, but its too flashy, so they keep out of the human eye.

The conduit community is actually separated into two groups called the Punishers and the Protectors. The Punishers are redheaded angry conduits that use their powers to hunt vampires because they believe there is no solution to their evilness. The Protectors are blonds that think the vampires may have some humanity in them that is salvagable. The binding of the two sides is forbidden because if a vampire drinks a Punishers blood then said vampire is ammune to all Punisher powers until the blood runs from their systems. The only way to stop the crazed vampire is to send in the Protectors. And visa versa. Their powers aren't the same, so the vampire isn't ammune to the other side, too. Its the only way to keep balance. Unless the two conduit sides mix and have both bloodlines in one. Kira is the only mix known to man and she may or may not be the destruction of all if her blood is consumed by a vampire with ill intent. (hide spoiler)]

this book was free on amazon. thats the only reason i got it. and when i finally had some time to start reading a new book, i read the description about Ignite and was a little disappointed that it was about vampires. i dont read vampire books!
but i took a risk and it paid off.

I would like Kaitlyn Davis for giving me the opportunity to read her book. I liked that this was not the typical vampire book although at first it reminded me a lot of the beginning of Twilight. “Ignite” definitely had it’s own vampire twist like no other book I have read. Intrigued me with the superhuman “conduit”. I like how Davis has created this new twist and look forward to reading the sequel.

IGNITE started off a bit slow, but the characters were interesting from the beginning. I thought the dialogue was solid and realistic throughout. I loved the super hero debate early on, as that exact scene totally happens in real life everywhere. It's been a while since I have read a really good YA vampire book. They have become so cliche that I often avoid them. Imagine my surprise when I picked up Ignite and fell in love with it by page 17. I emailed Kaitlyn that minute to tell her how much I was enjoying Ignite. At this point, I wasn't even really certain that the book was about vampires but I suspected as much. But hey...these vampires surfed. I loved Kaitlyn's lore surrounding her vampires. It was unique and well thought out.

At this point, I wasn't even really certain that the book was about vampires but I suspected as much. But hey...these vampires surfed. I loved Kaitlyn's lore surrounding her vampires. It was unique and well thought out.

Kira make a great heroin. She is faced with adversity and doesn't back down. She knows what she wants and she's going to get him...no matter what anyone says. I loved that she didn't do the whole "which one do I want" thing. She loves Luke as a friend and respects his opinion but that is as far as it goes. Tristan is the one for her, the one who makes her all warm and gooey, the one she dreams about, the one who brings out the fire in her...literally.

I loved Tristan but I felt his character was underdeveloped. He was supposed to be the bad boy but I never got that feel from him. I kind of felt like he had no real internal struggle. He wanted Kira and he would make it happen. Easy peasy. Sexy - definitely, tortured - certainly, take home and have my way with - oh hell yeah. But things were just too easy for him.

Luke is great. He's the supportive best friend when he needed to be and the protective older brother at other times. I enjoyed his light-hearted interactions with his friends and fierce reactions to Tristan and his crew of misfits. Luke was completely believable in his role.

Kira and Luke are conduits. They are the only things that can harm vampires...ever. They don't do it by ripping their bodies to shreds and burning them, they don't decapitate them, they don't stake them. They draw the sun into their body and use it as a weapon. Kira comes to Charleston without any knowledge of who or what she is. She realizes that Luke looks similar to her ex-boyfriend from up north and that his eyes are "psycho" like hers. At least that's what one of their friends point out.

Luke refers to Tristan and his friends as the "misfits." Of course, Luke knows more about them than he let's on. Luke has been sent to protect and watch Kira by the council. She was born to a Punisher and a Protector. These are two groups of people who have the power to either kill (Punishers) or weaken (Protectors) vampires. Punishers believe that vampires have no souls and therefore possess no ability to control themselves and care for others. Protectors believe that maybe vampires do have a chance at normality.

Kira has the powers of both Punisher and Protector which cause her to be a concern to her people and vampires, alike. Secrets will be revealed that leave Kira frustrated and upset with those she is closest too. Kira will have to learn to use her powers in order to save herself and quite possibly Luke and Tristan from death.

Truly, I enjoyed Ignite immensely. I did feel like certain aspects of the story weren't fleshed out enough and from time to time I got a Twilight feeling. That is not a bad thing in my book except to say certain parts lacked creativity. Overall, I would definitely recommend Ignite to anyone looking for a good YA Paranormal Romance.

It took me a while to get into this one. If True Blood and Twilight had a baby, this would be it. (finally, an explanation for Sookie's glowing hands!) The beginning of the book played out too much like twilight and I really had problems getting into it because of that. I couldn't decide whether to give this book three or four stars but I decided that it was deserving of four. I enjoyed this book quite a lot and am intrigued enough to read the sequel.

Took me on a thrill ride! I LOVED IT! Kira is an amazing character who is not wimpy like most girls are and not afraid to go after what she wants no matter who don't like it. Let me start off by thanking Kaitlyn Davis for the awesome opportunity of letting me read her book. I am definitely look forward to 'Simmer' and any other books from Davis.

Her new friend Luke and Tristan are enemies but neither will explain why. After a few interesting events, including a near drowning while surfing and being saved by Tristan, Kira's crush deepens. She seems to keep running into Tristan although he does try to stay away from her. It isn't until she is attacked by the Misfits and exhibits strange powers that things start to come clear.

Kira is a conduit. Conduits are the only ones who can kill vampires which is what the Misfits are. But there are two kinds of conduits - Protectors and Punishers - and Kira is the forbidden child of a Punisher father and a Protector mother. Her parents were killed when she was little and she has been raised by her aunt and uncle not knowing they weren't her parents. Luke has been sent by the Protectors to guard and train her. They become good friends as he teaches her about conduits and she learns what she can do. Apparently being the child of both a Punisher and Protector has given Kira some unique powers too. She is able to use her powers to heal which Luke is reluctant to share with the Council that sent him to guard her.

Luke becomes her best friend but Tristan is the one she loves despite all Luke can do to convince her that all vampires are evil. She sees something special in Tristan. They get to know each other and secretly date. His companions and hers are both opposed to the relationship. She is convinced that he is not evil and that he won't hurt her. This was a nice romance and had some exciting parts for the action lover. It is also a story of a girl who learns that she has a hidden history.

I liked the story but felt it could have done with some copy-editing. There were a few wrong words and a number of grammatical things that were sort of jarring. I have a personal phobia about misusing "loose" and "lose" and the author was guilty of this. Also there were a quite a few instances when "her" was used when "she" would have been more correct. Here is example of the wrong word choice:

"Your foe confidence is amusing," Diana said and grabbed hold of Kira's chin.

I had to read that one a couple of times before I realized that the author meant "faux." None of these things hurt the flow or excitement in the story but they were a bit distracting.

I recommend this story for young adults who want to read one more story about vampires and the girls who love them. The concept of conduits who are able to kill vampires was a nice touch. And, naturally, the author has a sequel in the works.(less)

I found Kira to be likable, she catapulted the story forward by being fiercely determined, smart, witty, and fun. The other characters were just as enjoyable, but I have to say that I was disappointed in Emma's (Kira's friend) character. She had moments where she was superbly excellent, but her parts were mostly dominated by the cliche of the overly talkative friend. I also found a tiny inconsistency with Chloe's (Kira's sister) age, she was either four or five, both ages were stated once. There was a bit of unrealisticness as Kira's parents were never 'parenting', I understand the reasoning behind it, but she was constantly getting into trouble (ie. after curfew, not coming home), but never once suffered any consequences.

In the first half of Ignite, I was pulled deeply into the emotions surrounding the three main characters. It seemed, though, that near the end the emotions started to taper off, leaving me lacking, but still intrigued. Ignite is a fairly new take on vampires and conduits (aka really cool vampire slayers). The history was well thought-out and the plot had some unexpectedness to it, but at the end, I again felt that it became a little too predictable. The ending gives the reader a complete end, but the knowledge that there is more to come. There were still a few mysteries that were left unsolved that will most likely come to play a bigger part in the future installments. I'm curious to see where the story will lead. I'm crossing my fingers that it's not going to turn out the way the sneak peek suggests.

Also, I don't want to be too picky, but even though I LOVE the cover, once reading the story, it doesn't quite fit with Kira and the way I imagined her. I get it, it makes complete sense, but she is described to have strawberry-blonde hair. That is not strawberry-blonde(I would know, I had it until my early twenties. And, yes, it was natural.), I would call it copper. Maybe if the colors were mixed a little bit more, not so chunky? I don't know, but it is still a fabulous, eye-catching cover.
