The 13 to Life series started of amazingly well for me and I was completely enamoured with this original werewolf story. But, books 4 and 5 were a complete let down. I felt book 4, Destiny and Deception, was just a long drawn out lead up to this one. Peter is a completely different character from the beginning after taking the cure, and not in a good way, the timing is all over the place, and just as things start to pick up, it ends on a cliff hanger.

The 13 to Life series started of amazingly well for me and I was completely enamoured with this original werewolf story. But, books 4 and 5 were a complete let down. I felt book 4, Destiny and Deception, was just a long drawn out lead up to this one. Peter is a completely different character from the beginning after taking the cure, and not in a good way, the timing is all over the place, and just as things start to pick up, it ends on a cliff hanger.

Rivals and Retribution opens where Destiny and Deception left off, with a rescue mission by the Rusakova's to rescue Jessie. Even at Jessie's kidnapping, Pietr didn't seem to be able to build up any heat or passion. Thankfully, fear for Jessie's life is enough to make Pietr's wolf overcome the cure, but my joy at that didn't last very long, as he immediately imprints with Marlaena, alpha of a rival pack who arrived in Junction in the last book, and is a really unappealing character.

The Pietr who appeared in the first three books of this series was hot, passionate, caring, tough, protective and all those things that I love in my book crushes, but this guy disappeared at the end of book 3 and unfortunately, never makes a reappearance.

Again, the timing in this book was all over the place and at times, it felt rushed. At one point, Alexei is struggling to find the new cure and doesn't know if he's going to have it in time to save Pietr, then within a couple of pages, he's on his way home from the laboratory with enough of the cure for everyone. It was just really off.

The last chapter was really annoying. Jessie wakes up after a few hours of sleep and thinks the whole book series has just been a dream!!!! WTF! She eventually realises it wasn't but this was just ridiculous.

I feel as if Shannon had completely lost interest in this series for the last two books. If she'd stopped after book 3, this would have been an amazing series, but unfortunately, that wasn't to be. With the result that I'll be reluctant to pick up anything by this author again.(less)

WOW!
So I finally finished reading Rivals and Retribution (The final book in Shannon Delany's debut series) and man, that was one hell of an emotional roller coaster!
To the point where I was crying, laughing, hysterical, and enraged. I even yelled at the book as if that would change the characters decisions.

I decided to read this book is because it really interested because the characters Jessica Gillsman and Peitr Rusakova were so mysterious. Wow! It's the last book...I can't believe it's over. Delany did an amazing job with wrapping up the series in my opinion. There were some slightly annoying things, but seriously, nothing major. Warning, there are some slight spoilers about the previous books in this series.

I enjoyed the first four books in this series, but for some reason, this book was very hard to get through. It almost felt like Shannon Delany just wanted to get through this last book so that she could start a new project.

In the prologue, we keep being told that Jessie is not like ordinary girls. The repetition of that annoys me no end, especially because she's like so many teenage girls. One of the biggest examples of this is ALSO in the prologue, when she admits that Pietr isn't as attractive...more

A brilliant conclusion to a wonderful series.

Jessie, Pietr and the Rusakova gang are back again. We have seen all the characters grow and now it’s time to wrap up their story. Shannon Delany’s 13 to Life series has to be one of the best Werewolf series I have ever read. Rivals and Retribution starts right where Destiny and Deception lets off and is as fast paced as ever.

I really enjoyed this last book- which was a relief because #4 felt slower until the last 1/3 of the book (and cliff hanger ending- glad I didn't have to wait for it to be published!!!) I'm not that fond of books that jump from this persons point of view to that persons, but in the end it tied the story together much better than I anticipated.

I was constantly irritated that key conversations and action seemed to be missing and I couldn’t tell how much time was passing or reconcile who knew what, when, why and how. I think I liked the first 100 pages because it focused on one story, there was no time-skipping or holes where conversations needed to be. After this, though, it was all downhill.

I thoroughly detested the (view spoiler) and I thought a lot of the revisiting of past (and current) loose ends seemed pointless and too busy. For example, the Derek stuff was completely ridiculous and seemed to be largely addressed just because it had been mentioned a couple of books ago and dropped--really seemed stupid to dredge it up again and try to force it to fit--or pretend that it “helped”--with the current story. And, a lot of loose ends were conveniently and quickly terminated--often in crazy and abrupt ways (e.g. (view spoiler))--seemingly just to make sure no little string was left hanging and everything was methodically checked off. There was no climax to the story, though there was some potential for a big one with (view spoiler)--instead, everything ended with almost a whimper. I thought the ending with (view spoiler) was so ludicrous!! And, though checked off, many of the endings were unclear and left me with questions: (view spoiler)? It bugged me, too, that we never got any big declarations of devotion from anybody--(view spoiler)! And, the (view spoiler) thing at the end was beyond ridiculous!!

This book was better than the last, but not by much. I’m just happy the series is over! It should have ended 2 books ago and, even then, it was so chaotic and littered with plot threads that I could barely sort it all out. I’m not sure what compelled me to continue this series to the end… One final note: I did like some of the tongue-in-cheek comments Jess makes/thinks in this series--overt comparisons to Twilight, comments about feeling like she’s in a paranormal romance sequel, etc. Those were fun, but didn’t make up for all of the things that weren’t fun… I doubt I’ll read anything else by this author in the future.

Well, I cannot believe this is the end...I am so sad that I will not be visiting my beloved werewolf family of Jess, Pietr, Max, Amy, Cat, and Alexi. The last book in Shannon's debut series and I am content with the story and how everything ended.

However, because so much was going on and all the different povs, it felt choppy to me. It wasn't a smooth fluid read like the rest of the series. The ending of the book kind of snow balled for my taste, but everything was wrapped up an addressed. I am so glad this series is over. It really went downhill the last couple books. This is much less a review and more of a rant (an all over the place, random rant). So be warned.

After all the time I invested into this series, the payoff was just not what I wanted. AT ALL. I felt as if the author gave up on the story and rushed the book to the end. I think if I read a book in one sitting, wriggling from suspense during the second half, I owe the book 5 stars. That was my experience. This is the finale! Shannon Delany's 13 to Life series comes to an end with Rivals and Retributions and I must say it was heart-pounding! Heart-stopping even! You all know I am in love with this series! From the moment I saw the first cover, I was hooked!

We immediately pick up where we left off in Destiny and Deception, to make it better, Shannon has the last chapter of that book as the prologue in this one! So while it was just a few months for me, it was still nice to get that little bit, and will be nice for you guys as well if you haven't read Destiny and Deception since its release as well!

So like I said, this was a pretty intense read! Jessie is kidnapped for a good 100 pages or so, and while still getting the multiple perspectives from Alexi and Marlaena, we get to know what's happening everywhere! We know Alexi and his family are rushing to rescue Jessie and Pietr is worried more than anyone despite his aloofness that he projected last time around.

We definitely see a new side of Marlaena and while we get a little better understanding of her, I can't say that I like her. At all. She was a wedge between Pietr and Jessie and I did not like that at all! But that right there, of course, is great writing! It's one thing to love a character, but it takes skill to make you hate a character I think. Even if you can understand their actions.

There's still the need for the cure of course, a more permanent one and Alexi is doing everything in his power to find one! Even if it means getting outside help.

Some things that weren't totally focused on were the events of the school and working with Wondermann Corporation. I understood what was going on, but I can't remember the details of their part in past books. Like what they did, besides the BIG main thing of course. Basically all loose-ends were tied up in this book and I thought they were done pretty nicely, even if some of them seemed a little too cleaned.

We also get a little bit of a closer look at Derek and what he did, but I was still confused on his overall identity...one of these days I have got to re-read the series back to back, as I have a poor memory for details once I've read 100s of books in between each! Again, I'll say that some of the other loose-ends that were secondary plot threads were tied up, just a bit too cleanly for my liking. I was all for another book!

The ending, oh the ending! Shannon really pulled a fast one on me! And even after my emotional reaction, I thought it was nicely done! Seriously, I'm still reeling with how she ended things! Shannon truly wrote a fabulous series here and as you know I love it all! From cover to cover of every book, this will forever remain one of my all time fave series! I will end this review with these simple words: The 13 to Life series was GREAT! ;)

I HATED the whole imprint thing between Pietr and Marlaena. It just complicated things even more between Pietr and Jessie. I mean, they'd already been having problems in their relationship and the imprint just made things worse. I am happy ,though, that at the end they finally found a cure that lengthens an oboroten's life and destroys an imprint without killing the wolf. Gabriel made me sick and I didn't miss him when Jessie killed him, though I'm not happy that she had to kill someone. Like so...more

Rivals and Retributions by Shannon Delany was an interesting addition to the 13 to Life series. I found it to be a bit lackluster after the trilling ending to Destiny and Deception. So while it was a decent read, I don't think it was my favorite book in the series.

I really enjoy the characters of this series. Max is so funny and just adorable, Cat is just intriguing and lovely, Amy is the best friend I wish I had, and so many more. They all are so real and I just love following their stories.

This is the final book in the 13 to Life series. I have enjoyed this series overall with books 2 and 3 being my most favorite. I really think that 5 books was just too long. The writing definitely wasn't on par with earlier books and I found myself getting increasingly annoyed with characters that I had previously liked.

Surprising of all was the turn Jessie and Pietr's relationship took. I knew it would change, with the fourth book's ending it HAD to change because Pietr had changed and certain folks didn't make it any easier for him to adjust to those changes. I should say the turn wasn't so surprising, more the way I felt about it. I thought I was feel...differently. More upset I suppose, like I was in the first two books and the problems their relationship underwent then. I think Delany handled this shift in dynamic better.

As for the other Rusakovas--no one is spared the insanity. Alexi undergoes quite a bit in his quest for redemption for his sins (perceived and otherwise). I forgot somewhere between books 3 and 4 how much Alexi made me ache for him. He really tries so hard and he's so under appreciated. He shines in this book, and deserves every moment of it.

Let me put this forth however, reading the last chapter's first page or two had me ready to tweet my displeasure from here to next year. I was almost ready to toss the book, no joke. I'm glad I kept reading though because Delany ties it up in such a way that I forgave her. Mostly. I demand those ten years I lost when I thought the worst idea ever was coming true.

As a finale to a series that I've loved more often then not, with a cast of characters I liked from the get go and a blend of genres I found irresistible this was good. Better than good. Some of it felt rushed; the final confrontation with the bad guys and resolution for instance. It was bam bam bam in such a way I had trouble digesting each new piece of information quickly enough to comprehend the next event.

This series did convince me that Shannon Delany is one of my favorite YA writers in the last five years and whatever she writes next I'll grab before someone can blink and say 'Hey!'(less)

So what did I think of the 5th (and final) book in the 13 To Life Series? To be honest, I was less than impressed. The first 70 pages or so were dedicated to rescuing Jessie (yes, AGAIN). With the story told from the same 3 POVs as book 4, and perspective changing literally from page to page, it was hard to get immersed in the characters or the story. I also felt that Marlaena's POV took too much focus away from Jessie and the Rusakovas.

Since I don't really like any of the new characters (the new pack), I don't care about them. It's hard to read a book that is one third (or more) about characters you don't give a shit about. I found myself wishing all of the Rusakovas, Jessie, and her friend, Amy, were written with the same care and attention that was in the first 3 books. The romantic relationships also suffered from lack of attention by the author. Jessie and Pietr were at a horrible point in their relationship in book 4, and it never improved in book 5 (which makes me sad.) Max and Amy didn't have anything important going on with their relationship. Alexi is over and done with acting like an ass, so we get none of the smoking and drinking and acting all Russian every time he thinks about Nadezhda. I thought he was more interesting (and hot) when he was dark and moody. Basically, everything that I had grown to love about these couples in the first 3 books was missing here. Also missing was the closeness of the Rusakova family, and that was something that I really felt the loss of.

I'm not at all satisfied with the final book of this series. So many subplots were introduced throughout the series that it was a little hard to sort through who knew what by the end. All of the goings on were cleaned up nice and tidy by the last page. I just wish things hadn't been previously dropped and then randomly picked up in book 5, only to have a simple, yet effective, resolution. It was just too easy. The ending was rushed and gave me no satisfaction.

You definitely need to read this book to have closure if you've read the first 4 books in the series. Why give up now, right? Overall, I did love the series, but I didn't always agree with (or enjoy) the the things that were going on. I felt a lot of ups and downs over the course of reading this series. I loved exploring the relationships, both personal and familial, in the first 3 books. The complete neglect that these relationships suffer through in the last 2 books is just wrong and it really breaks my heart.

I can't believe that it's the last book. The first 3 books in this series I loved, but the 4th one wasn't as good. Now at the fifth and final book I have to say I'm pretty disapointed. It took 100 pages just to save Jessie and so not much was going on. In the next 170 pages not much happened except Marlaene & Peter were acting strange and such. Then at page 270 Jessie finally figures it out and in about 20 pages they finally have a cure. I didn't understand how Marlaene always said she loved...more
