The Distance Between reflects a woman balancing her own wild and reckless heart with the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood. It is both the drawing together and the completely falling apart; the slow dancing in the kitchen and the slamming of the doors. To write lines about the one you love such as "and what we have/isn't called sex anymore" and balance it with ...more

Julie Valin is a a poet whose work appeals both to poetry lovers and those for whom poetry sometimes feels inaccessible or pretentious. She writes simply (the hardest way to write, I think) and so from-the-heart that her poems the pierce barriers of our differences and let every reader in. This collection of poems shows that a poet doesn't have to choose between being a renegade and having a happy , healthy life. Valin sits on the precipice between her wild child, single girl youth and her ...more

Julie Valin uses the pen with effortlessly skill to put the reader into the skin and bones of being human with either a jolt of lightning or the brush of feather. Reading the poems of "The Distance Between" I was transported back to the shock of love in all its nuances, depth and humor. Read these poems to discover a writer in the full bloom of her craft, and then go back to them again for delight and wisdom. She's a poet who compares to Kay Ryan, Billy Collins and Dorriane Laux. I can't wait ...more

I was lucky enough to meet and spend an incredible weekend with this gifted poet in Newport, Oregon last September. Her poems are simple (not simplistic), and accessible...everything that I am utterly convinced that poetry should be. She tells it like it is, painting portraits with her words that draw the reader into her memories, her most private of moments. By the time you are finished reading this book of exceptional poems, you will feel like you have found a new best friend.

Applause for Julie Valin’s book of poetry, “The Distance Between” Her feisty and honest wallop will leave one a bit dizzy, comparable to downing a few shots of tequila. A drunken poetry evolving around a lusting, trusting and knowing one-too-well relationship while teetering in that step on an unfamiliar plateau of motherhood and lastly conveying that she truly knows who she is.
