It is often a challenge to find children's books with black characters that aren't overwhelmed with historical narratives or self-affirming gobbly-gook (be like Harriet Tubman! You're special! No really!) The little touches make this book unique and lovely: Lola's soft cloud of unraveled hair when she wakes up, the way she kneels on the floor during story time at the library, or how her mom spoons a little cappuccino foam in her mouth during their snack-time. I read this book to my daughter almo...more

How could I not like a book that mirrors the way I am with our girls? Faithfully, just about every Saturday we go to the library and return our old books and pick up countless more. Sometimes we go twice a week, visiting different libraries each time. And when our girls were younger, I would take as many Wednesdays or Thursdays off as I could to bring them to library storytime - I knew when each of our libraries had them and our girls loved it! And reading stories at bedtime...well that's just a...more

I used this story for a libraries/reading theme for Spanish story time. I used the English version, Lola At the Library, for bilingual story time. This story is for younger children. The story shows Lola getting ready for her visit to the library, what happens when she's there, and what happens afterward. It's a good example of a book that facilitates children's narrative skills by asking children questions about the beginning, middle, and end of the book as it is being read and after the story...more

The story is very simple: It’s about the weekly trip Lola and her mother make to the library, although it includes a bit about the rest of their day, including the bedtime story.

It may not be a flashy story, but it’s a great book for teaching kids about the library, and it’s a bit of a love letter to libraries and books, so of course I enjoyed it.

I really liked the illustrations too.

The author and illustrator are both English but it doesn’t have a particularly English flavor; this story could h...more

My family has fallen in love with this book. The text and illustrations are both top notch. But I must admit we fell in love with the illustrations immediately. They are superb!!!

Little Lola gets so much joy from her trip to the library that it truly is contagious. It's great for encouraging the love of books and reading. Thank yous to Anna McQuinn and Rosalind Beardshaw for giving me something I can feel good about sharing with my children. Something that positively reinforces our values (we ar...more

With this book we could discuss the library. For some students it may be one of their first times going to the library. We could discuss rules for when they are in the library. We could discuss that they need to bring the books they have already checked out back before they can get new ones. From our rules at the library it can build into other quiet zones in the school and zones that we whisper have conversational voices, or loud voices. We could talk about parents-children relationships and pi...more

I realize I'm some kind of negligent boob, but tonight was the first time I took my 2 1/2 year old to the library. In my defense, I have a very spirited and physical child so I dreaded shushing her and containing her gigantic force of will. So, with my 5-month-old strapped to my chest and my toddler in tow (and I mean she was towing *me*), we took our first trip to the library tonight. I was rewarded for my efforts with the following:
--Bella tore books off the shelf and attempted to misfile the...more

The toddler Lola loves Tuesdays because that is the day that she goes to the library with her mom. She loves the library because there is a special section for children, story time, singing, and books about everything! Plus, after she gets the books, her mommy reads to her every night.

The illustrations are done in acrylic, simply showing cartoon children. The picutres are from the child's view of the world and cut off adults at the knee. Lola, as well as the other children, are adorable.

Lola loves reading, and loves going to the library. Any time you have the opportunity to read a book that sheds a positive light on reading, is a good opportunity. This book would go great with a walking field trip to the local library and teaching kids about library cards and how to use the resources. This book can be tied to learning about community, librarians, libraries and many more. I would use this book in any classroom from kinder-second grade.

Very sweet little book. the book describes Lola and her moms Tuesday routine. Lola enjoys them beccause she gets to go to the library. This book is a very good book to use as a way of explaining to children the way to return book and look for new books, especially if they are not accustom to going to the library. This book also lets children know that their are differnt activites they can do at the library such as sing along time, storytime, etc.

I never take out books about the library. Going to the library is so ingrained in what we do that I never feel a story about it is necessary. But, thinking about it now, maybe Natalie would like it because it would be familiar. This was a nice story about the library. Colorful illustrations accompany the story of a trip to the library that covers all the important aspects, including reading the books at bedtime later.

Lola at the Libary is a great book to pull out before your class goes to the school library! I believe this book can show children the importance of a library and just how useful and fun going to the library can be! In the story, Lola loves Tuesdays because that's the day Lola goes to the library with her mom. Therefore, the teacher could start a writing prompt of, " I love Tuesdays because..." and the class could create their own mini books. Overall, I would recommend this book for children in...more

Tuesday is Lola's favorite day of the week. Why? It's library day. Lola gets to pick out new books, play, and even listen to a story. The library is Lola's favorite place.

What I thought: I like Lola from the moment I met her in Lola Loves Stories. Her first book doesn't disappoint me. I now know where her love of stories comes from--her weekly visits to the library. The illustrations are bright and colorful. The lines are soft and don't overpower the color. My favorite illustration is of story t...more

Lola and mom to library on Tuesday!

Excitement for this day

Sometimes storytime or singing.

She can pick any book.

Books in the family's life.

this "book (and the previous "Lola Loves Stories" present a simple and compelling (and adorable) portrait of the power of books for an imaginative child" - Thanks Julie B.

A sweet, adorable book, Lola at the Library is so appealing that I can't imagine a two or three-year-old who wouldn't want to visit the library after hearing it. The words are simple, the print large, and the paintings cheerful, bright, and always from a child's eye view. Lola is a cherub of a toddler having a delightful day.

Lola shares her library routine with readers. This librarian appreciated the inclusion of storytime and the bedtime story ritual featured in text.Acrylic illustrations have a softness to them that adds to that warm feeling text gives about the library.

Great read aloud, especially when talking about the library with kids.

What a great picture book for young kids! The reader gets to follow Lola through her weekly trip to the library; from waking up, story time, checking out her books, and having her mom read them too her at bedtime. This would be a perfect book to read before the class' first visit to the library!

This book would be perfect for reading to young children prior to their first trips to the library! Ina fun, creative way, readers learn about the process of going to the library, checking out books, and enjoying new stories, all while following Lola on her weekly library adventures!
Lindsay
I used this book for a libraries/reading story time theme. I used the English version for bilingual story time, and I used the Spanish version, Lola en la Biblioteca, for Spanish story time. See my comments for the book under the Spanish title.

One of the cutest books I've ever read! This book had great illustrations and allowed you to follow Lola through her experiences of going to the library with her mom! I'd love to include this is my classroom.

Lola loves going to the library on Tuesdays with her mommy. She enjoys reading books. At night her mom reads her a story. Students would enjoy this family-oriented and love for reading. (1st-3rd grade)

Lola goes to the library with her mother to check out books. Good to use for children who are about to get their first library card. Students can compare and contrast the character in the story to themselves.

I loved this book. Lola is so cute. She's excited about reading and exploring her local library. This has a great influence on young children because it makes them want to be involved in reading and visiting the library.

The illustrations went along with the book perfectly. The story was cute. The book helps add diversity to books. The story is easy to follow. I'd recommend this book to the younger age bracket.

This is sure to be a book I read to my future kids. Lola loves the library and she goes every Tuesday with her mom. A great picture book and I love the illustrations and Lola's hair. :-)

I like this book because it is about books. It makes children want to go to the library like Lola. This would be a good book to read before your first trip to the library as a class.
Robert
Unlike another book en espanol about libraries I read recently, this one contains the word "book", as well as "scan" and "return". This is relevant to my interests.
Jocelin
It is always fun to read a story about a little girl that likes to go to the library. The illustrations in the book were simply sublime. Fun, fun read.

I've always been into books and think I am so lucky to spend my time working with them too. I work part-time running parent and child activities at a local library (for under 5s) and the rest of the time writing, editing and otherwise working on children's books.
When I'm not developing ideas or editing someone's text or writing my own, I'm reading - what a wonderful life - it's no wonder I have a...more
