Jonathan Hatcher has led an interesting life. Once the psychic protégé of Dr. Nelson Cagney of the Bureau of Psychological Corrections, he escaped and went on the run through post-World War Three Europe, scraping a living out of the ruins of civilization and avoiding the mindless vics: humans turned berserker by exposure to biological and chemical weapons.

This book is written with time-frame that moves back and forth from past to present -- the past portion is rather in dream or in Jonathan's musing. It makes it dizzying for me to read, and unfortunately also makes Sam (the supposedly other MC) becomes a two dimensional character that is never fleshed out. Especially because my interaction with Sam, as a reader, only come from Jonathan's memory. His meeting Sam is unclear and that 'building-relationship' part is even fuzzier. I can't cap

Aaaaand, stick a fork in me. I'm done. This is not some kickass X-Men-like story. It's more like a psychic version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest mixed with a dash of Cast Away (for all the imaginary convos Jonathan has with Sam). It's dark and depressing and the characters so far are either hopeless, insane, or diabolically cruel. Ugh. Double ugh.

Bottom line: Not for me.

I'm a big fan of Cari Z.'s writing and was really pleased when I found out that this novel was being published. Most of her other works are in short story form and I was interested to see whether she could sustain as story over a longer format. Her writing has always appealed to me being both engaging and with a lovely flow. That same strength in the writing is still present in A Blinded Mind, as is a story which is strong on character and setting. However, some of the choices in the narrative s ...more

Slash Readers: I couldn't put this one down. I wanted to see what Cari Z. could do with a longer work and I must say that I was not disappointed.

The story takes place for the most part as a cross cutting between Jonathan Hatcher's past and his current circumstances. If anyone had told me that you could take a character locked up in a prison cell for the most part of a book and make it a page turner... I would have been surprised. However, this was not the case.

There's a great deal of depth to Jo

Johnathon is a powerful psychic held captive by an evil organisation. He last saw his badly injured lover, Sam, just before he was taken and now, in his cell, he relives their affair at the same time he tries to survive his imprisonment. Written in alternating past and future episodes, I think this was an ambitious format for the author to choose but for me the reader it just didn't pay off. The relationship with Sam was confusing and by the time I caught up and became invested in them as a coup ...more

Readers used to Cari's more lighthearted style, such as 2014's Making it Work, may find A Blinded Mind, set in a dystopian near-future, comes as something of a surprise.
Jonathan Hatcher is a powerful psychic, his abilities having been ruthlessly groomed and exploited from childhood by the sinister PsyCo. After an experiment goes badly wrong he refuses to cooperate any further, and is moved to a high security facility. He escapes thanks to the gruesome intervention of another prisoner, a

I've read a lot of Cari's books and this is definitely the most complex story that she's written. The subject matter of the book is relatively dark (post-apocalyptic Europe is no fairy-tale world) but there are moments of real sweetness to be found (between Jonathan and Tai, specifically). I did find the transitions from Jonathan's past memories and present recollections of Sam to be hard to follow sometimes. I also felt that while Jonathan's character is well developed and complete, by the end ...more

An intense and complex history suspended between past and present, in post war that sees the destroyed world, ruled by organizations formed by people with psychic powers and other men survived the bacteriological and nuclear weapons. The protagonist is Jonnie has a strong mental power, but is not willing to use it to kill. He flees but to save Sam's life can be captured. And it's thought that Sam keeps him alive despite the torture to which it is subjected. And 'tragically and ruthlessly realist ...more

I did not have high expectations for this one, but it turned out to be a very well fleshed post-apocalyptic world. The main theme is a pretty popular one, with the presence of psychic powers and an autocratic government organization that abuses those who have them. The characters were rich and interesting. I liked that one of the love interests was a POC but it was not treated as a fetish. The overall story was interesting, if not really fresh or new. The downsides for me were a little bit of ti ...more

The writing was very good. The back and forth of past vs. present was separated well so I didn't get confused but every time I would begin to get into the story and it would snap to the other. The relationship was...strange. It just didn't click for me. I enjoyed the world that was set up but not enough background was given for me to really understand it all. Confusing. The character of Jonathan is a very well thought out character. He does draw you in and was the main reason I enjoyed the story ...more

3.5 stars This is a good sci-fi/fantasy novel set in the post WW III future. The United States doesn't exist, but PsyCo does, and it controls the psychics and uses them for its own purposes. Jonathan is a psychic, who was trained at PsyCo, and escaped. Then he let PsyCo catch him in hopes of saving his lover, Sam. The story is dark, as befits the dark future depicted here, and is vividly told.

A majority of the story contains flashbacks and mindsex but the plot was really interesting. This author always does a wonderful job with her stories and this one was no different. (view spoiler)

I really liked the world that the author was creating with this story, but the way that it was presented didn't work for me at all. Everything was through memory and visualizing discussions with his lover. We are only in the here and now during his time in the institution and that grew extremely repetitive. Great potential that never happened.

90% of the book was recalled pass and talking to virtual lover. Not something exiting as blurb promised. Plus everything was fuzzy from the Apocalypse world in the background till how the relationship developed.
