Postcards from Elsewhere eases off with a boat trip through the swampy cultural soup of the fabled Deep South. Reid’s first encounter is with that great staple of anecdotal writing about the US – the Great American Obsessive. He visits an unofficial Elvis museum called Graceland Too and meets Paul, the museum’s warped curator. Reid gently ridicules this verbose fanatic and compares Paul’s brain with a shaky pile of crockery.

Graham Reid is a veteran Kiwi journo and clearly something of a culture
