Here is authentic French cooking without fuss or fear. When we think of French cooking, we might picture a fine restaurant with a small army of chefs hovering over sauces for hours at a stretch, crafting elegant dishes with special utensils, hard-to-find ingredients, and architectural skill. But this kind of cooking bears little relationship to the way that real French fam...more

As per the title, what is the subject of this book? "Bonne Femme," literally, means good wife. In cooking, though, it refers to (Page vii): "the fresh, honest, and simple cuisine served everyday in French homes." This book, then, focuses on the casual side of French cooking. This is not Escoffier!

The book itself is organized in a fairly standard way--starters, salads, soups, cooking main dishes (sauté, braise, stew, roast), casseroles and pasta, side dishes, pizzas and tartes, eggs and cheese, a...more

This cookbook has become my go to cookbook for very tasty, easy and no-fail meals. Even better, Wini Moranville is a delightful person and so much of her personality comes through in her book. I've actually read the book cover to cover and love the helpful tips and memoirs that she's added to the book. As a person who doesn't always have the best luck in the kitchen, this book has proven to be especially helpful because it seems impossible to mess up the recipes. I find it rare to find a book (o...more

I have chewed over reviewing a cookbook for a few weeks, and I'm just going to go ahead and do it.

I forget where I first heard about this book, but my guess would be The Wall Street Journal style section. I stuck it on my Amazon wishlist a while ago and it arrived via my aunt in March.

I have since made almost all of the entrees, and several of the sides, a few desserts... this book is fabulous. It has practical, easy to follow instructions and pretty much everything here is delicious. My partic...more

Got this cookbook at the library and had to ask for it for my birthday. I have recently come (late to the party) to the realization that checking out cookbooks at the library is absolutely awesome (thanks Cristin!). So I saw this one in a catalog and took a swing for it because I've enjoyed Julia Child's work.
This is refreshing. Healthy, fresh, elegant, simple, delicious, fun to create. Not stuffy, filled with butter and cheese, boring, dull, or tasteless.

I highly recommend giving this cookbook...more

What a great cookbook! This volume is filled with recipes for classic French dishes at their basic best. The recipes seem so achievable that I can't wait to try them all. It also has sidebars with additional information about ingredients, the history of some of the recipes, shopping, and methods. I'd recommend this cookbook to anyone who loves to spend time in the kitchen.

My high hopes for this were totally not fulfilled. I found the recipes to be unoriginal; she relies a lot on prepared food and it was more a general cookbook, not really French. I did find her introductory notes interesting, and she's a good writer - I just wasn't wild about this cookbook. Maybe Dorrie Greenspan has ruined me for all other French cookbooks?

Page after page of amazing recipes- this book is also beautiful and rich in appearance with cute color illustrations. Though it does not have pictures of the food, it is appealing and I will frequently look through it for dinner ideas.

The author has also laced the book with little stories about her travels and experiences with French cooking. Delightful to read.

Ive buzzed through this quickly last night, i was delighted with almost everything I saw. This one might be a bit out of my skill range though.. but wont know unless i try. French recipes translated into Iowan, there might be hope for me yet. I wish there had been photos in this... but I will accept excellent directions in lieu of visuals.

I've made 3 different dinner recipes from this cookbook and they were all very good. Definitely something that I may purchase for my collection.
