bookshelves: 19th-century, dual-language-edition, french, poetry, queer-characters-or-themes, works-in-translation
Read in April, 2000
Rimbaud's poetry forms a heartbreaking crystallization of being a young tortured artist in late 19th century France. His poems are stunningly beautiful but it's maddening to think he wrote most of them before he turned 20. He's the quintessential enfant terrible, but he's so pretty, and his poems are amazing.

I like to read these out loud to my cats; sometimes in English but usually in the French. That's why I love dual language editions like these so much. It's a fantasy of mine to find a w...more

the cover reminds me of my punk rock childhood in berkeley when i first found this book and james dean and they mixed together i my mind, weird because james dean is so mostly speechless. what i liked about rimbaud is if you read about his crazy insane life you see he lost a leg (i'm pretty sure) and in a poem he wrote before her lost his leg he talked about his phantom leg, well that's not what i like about him, but i love him, i used to have a crush on him.

bookshelves: gave-up-on-reading
According to the receipt still in the book, I've had Illuminations for almost nine years. I know I've picked it up many, many times. But I've never been able to get all the way through it. I like reading poetry, but Rimbaud just goes way over my head. I just don't Get It. Maybe I'll try it again in a few years. Until then, it's back up on the shelf with poor li'l Arthur.

This is a great introduction to Rimbaud, in excellent English translations facing the French originals. These short, strange, aphoristic poems are some of my favorites.

bookshelves: books-i-want-to-be-buried-with, poetry
Rimbaud transmutes purely sensual experience into a glimmering (even when its grimy) poetry. A veritable box of chocolates for the decadent aesthete.

Read in January, 1990
I learned to stop listening to Jim Morrison. Seriously, though, it changed everything--and this is still the best translation.
