What an oddity from the Marvel Comics company. No superheroes. Each issue has several stories, usually less than 10 pages, with no continuity between stories, each ends at the end. And it's all western crap.

That being said, it's diverting enough to read if you have a high level of Marvel Comics curiosity. The best part is easily the artwork. This is Jack Kirby with probably his cleanest and most painterly images, maybe because A) this was very early in his later Marvel career, just at the turn o

To be honest I was not expecting to like this all that much. As a child I did not read many western comic books and the only reason I decided to read this one was that it contained quite a bit of early 1960s Jack Kirby art and I had enjoyed his short run on Kid Cowboys of Boys' Ranch. I also have to admit that I was also interested in seeing how much of the original character had actually inspired Ron Zimmerman and John Severin's Rawhide Kid: Slap Leather, which was an unexpected delight. I enjoy Marvel's Essential collections very much. If you want to get into a new character without having to find and collect the vast backlog of old issues this is the way to go. Just the important and high points of the characters career. Recommended
