IRONICALLY, I began reading this book on the eve of the Lebanese joint committees approving the Orthodox Gathering Law.

A familiarity with the work and thoughts of John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and John Stuart Mill will greatly help your reading and experience. Though this is not an easy read by any means and is an academic publication.

A fantastic book on the topic of separation of church and state. The book basis the majority of it's examination of the issues on concepts originally put forth by John Locke and John Stuart Mill, as well as existing case law in several countries. The issues covered include:

A Short History of Religious Intolerance
Hobbes, Locke, and their Legacy: Models of the Modern State
Religious Impositions and Endorsements
Religion-Based Morality and the Secular State
Persecution, Accommodation, and Con

Written with Blackford's customary clarity, this is a balanced, reasoned and ultimately persuasive treatment of a tricky and topical subject. A devout unbeliever and fringe member of the 'new atheist' movement, he displays a degree of nuance and even-handedness that's sometimes missing from the more polemical works, at least from Sam Harris or Christopher Hitchens - even quite regularly finding common cause with conservative Christian commentators like Ahdar and Leigh. Some of this content will ...more

This was aggravatingly hard to read. Like, the words were almost perfectly formulated not to be read or retained in your brain.
