What a disappointment.
After the buildup from the previous books I expected Eibhear & Izzy's romance to be spectacular. Instead, they just came together, the end.

The book has lots & lots of world building. In order to set the scene for the next 3 books? IDK, but it took away from E&I.

If I had written this review a week ago when I read the book, I believe my review would have been different from what is to follow. My first impression was a mix of love and like. Not bad, right? Seven days later...

I've made no secret as to my feelings of Izzy's actions, and frankly, my feelings on her sleeping with Celyn haven't changed a bit. I loved this book.

I've made no secret as to my feelings of Izzy's actions, and frankly, my feelings on her sleeping with Celyn haven't changed a bit. There were issues not addressed in regards to Izzy sleeping with Celyn for the reader, but I had the advantage of re-reading the series shortly before reading this installment and if this book had contained tantrums and blow-ups or even concern about Celyn in the picture then I think as the reader I wouldn't have been convinced either Izzy or Eibhear had matured enough to get to this point. I know I can't have it both ways, so I'm pleased the romance was between two mature adults--although Izzy had her moments making her, still, one of my least favorite characters. What I do appreciate is Eibhear maturing enough to have apologized to Izzy for his actions and no groveling being involved.

Overall, I found Izzy and Eibhear's coming together appropriate and quite enjoyable for the persons they have become and not the characters they were 10 years prior.

What really made this a 5-star book for me was the overall story. Aiken's books have evolved into a series that not only has strong characters, but a strong plot to support those characters. Because Izzy and Eibhear's book has been so built-up many series would have difficulty following such a book. "How to Drive..." has only notched up my desire for more. More characters and more story. The twins, Rhi, Brannie, Aiden, Frederick...the more the merrier. I can't seem to get enough of this series.

Sidenote: What I missed in this book has no bearing on my enjoyment, but two lingering questions from the previous books.

1. Did Ragnar Claim Keita?
2. Has Brastias aged 10 years or did he get the Chain of Beathag as well.

If I missed the answers to these questions, please would someone let me know, because I can't stop wondering.

I know I will end up giving this book 5-stars. I love the series but mostly the author. I have to admit I' ve been irritated with Izzy for sleeping with Eihbar's cousin. I don't think she should have waited around for Eihbar, but his cousin...really? While I'm supposed to believe she loved him too. I think Aiken gave her a pass in book 5 and it has bothered me since. I' m looking forward to the series beyond this book because I think Izzy should have to work for Eihbar, not the other way around. Knowing this won't happen will not prevent me from reading the book or enjoying it. Needed to vent that, it's been bothering me.(less)

So worth the wait!!! How can I say enough about this book? This couple - Eibhear and Izzy - have been my favorite romance couple for a while. Even though they never had their own book! So to now have their story... there were a LOT of expectations hanging on this one. I am so glad that it delivered!

Izzy and Eibhear’s story has been building for many books now and within the scope of the series, many years now. How To Drive a Dragon Crazy picks up about 10 years after the events in the previous book, The Dragon Who Loved Me, and Eibhear is one changed dragon. He still has his ever famous blue hair, but he’s been fighting as a group leader in the Mi-runach. The Mi-runach are a deadly group of warriors who are feared and take on the fights and killing that other dragons would probably run from. Eibhear has been with this group for ten years until he’s ordered to go to the location where Izzy and her troops are currently fighting and escort her home. He does and it’s the first time he’s seen her in ten years, and their bickering banter picks right back up.

“This is King Heru,” Iseabail introduced them, eyes widening in warning at the Blue.

“Centaur shit.”

“Eibhear!”

“Why would the king of the Desert Lands kidnap you?”

“What does that mean?”

The Fire Breather frowned. “What do you think that means?”

“You know exactly what I think it means. And I think you know that what I think it means is exactly what you’re meaning.”

“That made absolutely no sense.”

“Shut up.”

“But-“

“Just shut up.”

My review will focus on two things, the relationship between Izzy and Eibhear and the series as a whole, which is always the biggest player in any Dragon Kin book. The world building is huge and things are set in motion for events to come.

First, the romance. This was disappointment for me. It’s not uncommon in this series for the lead romance to take a back seat to everything else going on. But with the build-up we had for Izzy and Eibhear, I guess I just expected more. Gone is the Eibhear from the past, always keeping Izzy at arms length. They bicker and annoy each other and then hello, start having sex. I’m honestly torn about how I feel. On the one hand, it absolutely fits with this series. Romance, while it’s there between the dragons and their mates, it has never felt like the main storyline. But I still feel like it’s a bit of letdown overall for them. Their dialogue, and the dialogue in general in this series, is always fast paced, snarky, sarcastic, and that’s of course present and had me laughing out loud many times throughout the story. But where there was conflict in the past (Izzy being with Celyn for example) that’s completely not present here. There are no other dragons or men in Izzy’s life to make a play for her affections and Eibhear and Izzy just kind of fall into a relationship. I guess I had higher expectations for how things would go between them.

This installment felt like a transition book in the series. There are a lot of things getting set up for the next phase, the main focus in this story was on the children, the twins Talan and Talwyn now 18 years old and Rhianwen. They still have that freaky connection between them, but for Rhi, her power is getting out of control and she needs someone to help train her in it. The only person that could possibly do this is her grandmother, who’s most hated by Talaith and Izzy. This provides the focus of the story, Izzy and Eibhear must travel into the dangerous Desert Lands to gain a meeting with the witch. There are also a few tasks handed down by the Gods, a few dragons to fight and a new family branch for Izzy to meet. It was an interesting journey for them, specifically for Izzy and one that set up the path for all three, now grown children, who by books end are finding their own way.

Dagmar faced the Iron, quickly bowed her head. “King Gaius, I’m sorry about the confusion. I’m Dagmar Reinholdt, Vassal of Garbhan Isle and Battle Lord – ”

“And my piece of ass!” Gwenvael announced from the other end of the table while he dropped into one of the chairs. “So keep you grubby Sovereign claws off her.”

“-and,” Dagmar continued desperately, “I’d like to welcome you and your companions to Garbhan Isle…”

As always, the dialogue and characters are just insane, in the best way. They fight constantly, they hurl insults and names at each other, kill random people and/or farm animals (if they need a snack), all this has me either laughing or cringing. I love sarcasm and I love snark and this series is full of both and the crazy fast pace of the scenes and dialogue, the quick cuts between scenes has me flipping the pages fast, start to finish.

This won’t go down as my favorite book in the series, but it’s still a wild ride and one that fans will want to read. I enjoy the overall arc of the series (a series best read in order, I would not call the books stand alones) and it’s a world where G.A. Aiken doesn’t hesitate to do things like put huge time jumps into the series to move things along. As usual, the ending isn’t clear cut. There’s an HEA for the lead couple, but who knows if they each be going off fighting separately for years to come or not. The ending is also a beginning of sorts for Talan, Talwyn and Rhi and I can’t wait to learn more about each of them now as adults. They were scary as kids and promise to be even more so as adults. Even with a romance that was a bit disappointing, it’s still a fun ride catching up with all the characters and seeing where this series is headed. (less)

Whoohoo Izzy & Éibhear! Now life is complete

Okay While I still really liked this book & series,

wasn't as awesome as it could have been. Izzy and Éibhear's romance was lacking somewhat. I felt Éibhear should have groveled a little bit more, Izzy was *gasp* too easy! Usually I actually like it when a heroine is just as ready as the hero, but gven their past, Éibhear should have had to work to seduce Izzy IMO. Still this book was as funny and witty as all the other dragon kin novels and...more

So many authors have gone this same route that G. A. Aiken (aka- Shelly Laurenston) has gone with this novel. For example Laurell K. Hamilton and J.R. Ward to name two popular authors. They take what starts out as a perfectly good series that mainly concentrates on one couple, if it's a romance, or one mystery to solve, and then down the road they feel that it somehow serves a better purpose to start making their books into what amounts to a series of short stories that vaguely interconnect. If it's the romance you are reading, like this series is supposed to be, you expect a lot of the story will belong to the main characters.

Unfortunately that isn't what you are going to get with this book which is supposed to be about Éibhear the Blue and Izzy, a tale that was started about 10 years ago and ended quite badly. With this book things should have picked up, but it took reading nearly halfway through before they even had relations. I grasp that things are not going to work out right from the very start of the book. But this is taking a ridiculous amount of time.
I am reading more about things going on with Annwyl's twins, Rhi, Izzy's sister and then Gaius and Agrippina, among other 'stories'.

The points of view change at a dizzying rate, although the narrative and descriptions remain steadfastly vivid. Peoples (dragons) opinions about things change at lightning speed. It is an amusing novel although not as good as the very first three or so in the series. My head spun as I tried to keep up with just who the story was supposed to be about at any given moment.

A book should not take this much work to be enjoyed.

At about 60% though it does start to pick up when Izzy and Éibhear reach the Sand Dragons land and some big surprises are revealed. I can see that this is a book that is meant to move the series along in perhaps a new direction, but still it pains me to have had to read so much that bothered me just to get to the good parts.

I have given up on JR Ward for doing this and now I think I will seriously think hard before I pre-order the next book. I think I will wait to see what other readers have to say first. (less)

The best parts of Book 5 were the fight scenes (Crazy, crazy Annwyl- Every book on the planet needs a crazy Annwyl) so I'm really hoping Book 6 has plenty of action and adventure and plot. It makes for a heftier, less cloying read than many books in this genre... more of a paranormal/fantasy in which the characters fall for each other than a plain paranormal romance.

I've always pictured Éibhear as a bigger version of Smallville's Clark Kent (big, gorgeous, bumbling, and sweet). Is that just me?...more

Keita says that Izzy is required back at home so she sends Eibhear to get her. Eibhear thinks that the letter he sent to Izzy years ago (in which he apologizes for his actions before) was sent to her and that she never replied. But in reality, his family burned the letter for his own good. I mean, really. You don’t apologize to a woman for being a douche in a letter. It’s cowardly!

So, when Eibhear finds out what his family did to his apology letter, he realizes how deep in shit he is in. Facing Izzy after ten years is going to bring back a lot of trouble. But it also brings back a lot of repressed emotions and chemistry.

As expected, Izzy does not forgive Eibhear easily. She makes him work for it...hard. For most of the book, they are fighting, but knowing Aiken and her writing skills, it’s always entertaining. Their bickering is almost like foreplay, just like Izzy’s parents.

I should mention that some people may be slightly disappointed in this book if they go into it expecting an epic romance. Don’t get me wrong, the romance is there, but quite a lot happens outside of the romance as well. With the book being 400+ pages long, there’s lots of page time for the build up of the next books in the series. Some would call it a “transition book” because Aiken brings minor characters into the forefront now so that their stories are ready to be told. Part of that takes away from Izzy and Eibhear’s parts. But to be honest, as I devoured every page, I never stopped to think, “Hey, where’s the romance?” I was completely enthralled by this book and simply couldn’t put it down.

Dare I say it? I thought this book was one of the funniest of the series. I tabbed all the pages that made me laugh out loud and now my book looks so colorful with all the post-it flags sticking out of it! Those pages are definitely going to be reread immediately.

All major characters are in this book and new characters are introduced as well. Frederik was a great new addition and I can’t wait to read more about him as well. Rhi, and the twins, Talan and Talwyn make some huge decisions in this book that will definitely be played out as the series goes on. I still can’t believe how much older they are in this book! Also, there’s a handy glossary at the beginning of the book that lists the places and the inhabitants of the Dragon Kin world. It was a nice touch and turned out to be very helpful.

In the end, although I would have liked to have more sexy scenes with Izzy and Eibhear, I really can’t complain. This book was epic and this series continues to be one of my favorite paranormals out there. Who can resist a dragon with blue hair? Just like Izzy, I know I can’t! I wish I could forget everything I just read and read it all again for the first time! Loved it!!

I wonder now that Izzy is older in this book....will she be more mature? when will Éibhear wake the hell up and realize his feeling to her is more than just kin-ship...

...

I never anticipate on couples anymore. They always become the worst couple to read... which is shame after so many books build-up.

Both characters are annoying. Hardly any interactions & communication between them and bang...they have sex!Then...claiming...! Eibear barely did anything that deserve Izzy attention and devotio...more

This is the second time in the Dragon Kin series that time has jumped, this time ten years which means there's still time missing as Talan and Talwyn are now eighteen.

I've been waiting to read this book for so long and well it was kind of a let down. It seems nothing got resolved although Eb and Is get together finally - none of the reasons keeping them apart were ever fully resolved. I enjoyed visiting past characters - it's always a joy to see them! I guess I just kept waiting for the one moment when all would make sense.

K, so spoilers from here on out...
First impression of the book was that I had to change my perceptions of Izzy AND Eib. Eib's always been my fave character bc he reminds me of Ailean with his blue hair and being HUGE. Izzy annoyed me to no end bc she really seemed to have no clue as to what the battle-fuck she was doing to him. Reading the part where Iz says that sex with Celyn was just kind of a natural progression clicked with me, that's when I got it and I understood why Eib had to apologize to her. I had been prejudiced against her, thinking that she had just jumped on his fave cousin to piss him off. ANYWHO, once I started to readjust who these 'new' people were, I really really enjoyed the book. Izzy is a bit like Keita at first: skittish, using annoyance as a way of covering her feelings (like calling him Uncle) and so not looking for an emotional talk after sex. Eib was totally cool with the last one and smartly kept his mouth shut... until it was on her and then it was SEXY!!!

Sometimes I felt like Eib and Izzy kinda got shuttled to the background of the story, bc there was so much to set up for the next books with regards to the twins and Rhi, which I get, but I wanted more of Eib and Iz lovefest scenes. The parts about the twins and Rhi were good tho and sidenote: I LOVE FREDRIK! Dagmar and Gwenvael's new ward is gonna be hilarious, I just know it. I love that Gwen and Keita yell at him all the time LOL.

The family scenes are great, as always. Eib 'dealing' with Fal (totes asshole, I hope his new name Brannie gave him sticks) was a great scene, esp the part after when you see that Iz has always trusted him and finally shows him how much, simply by calling out to him when she's in trouble, very sweet. Eib in general is really sweet in the book and proves that he's the only person for Iz, since she kind of forgets anyone around her when she's arguing with him (as it should be! lol). Eib is so sexy in his devotion to her! And the fact that none of the men in his family seem to recognize him at first is really funny. Oh and the scene were Talaith "finds" him after his "brothers beat him up" was downright awesome, bc c'mon, none of us were expecting that level of sneakiness combined with utter cuteness from our beloved blue dragon.

So all in all this book is one of the best in the past 3 books in the series. Not that I didn't like Keita or Rhona's stories, but they had kind of lost the humour I'd grown to love in Aiken/Laurenston's writing. This book was funny, sexy and sweet and totally re-readable (I'm already re-reading it and prolly will a few times like I did with the first 3 books). FUCKING FANTASTIC!

P.S. Oh, I just want to say that I feel like we robbed of the Claiming scene in this book, but the moment leading up to it was cute :) (Sept 11, 2012 - new note on this. Shelly has gone on record to say that she didn't write their Claiming scene bc it wouldn't come to her naturally and didn't want it to be forced. Although she admits to rarely going back to an old book for any reason, she said if the inspiration ever hit her and she got the image of it in her head, she'd definitely write it and post it online. Until then, we are left holding the disappointed, but resigned, proverbial Bag :( sadness)

P.P.S. just thought about this: Eib Claims Iz, but she still has the dragon god's mark (can't spell his name) - is that allowed? it's like she now has been Claimed twice...
(Sept. 11, 2012 - new note on this - I had someone explain to me that the Dragon God's brand on her arm is a lot like when she wears Annwyll's colours into battle, but she can never take these 'colours' off because she is always going into battle for the Dragon God. I thought that was a good explanation - what do you think?)

P.P.P.S. I'm really curious as to how Eib would react to Izzy's nights with Celyn & Brannie or if she hadn't got blown off course at the end and landed on Celyn's back, bc it never really says how Eib feels about Celyn now (that part of the triangle didn't feel resolved to me). Celyn says he's "pathetically curious" about if Iz saw Eib, being the strange person I am I wondered "is he curious about Eib bc he misses/admires/loathes his cousin or is he curious about Izzy's reaction to seeing Eib (bc Celyn is jealous or wants Izzy)?" This was a highly anticipated, patiently awaited, read for me. I’ve wanted Izzy and Eibhear’s story since they first appeared together on the pages. There was something so funny about the way a sixteen year old Izzy could continually rile Eibhear up with just a look or a few choice words. And, poor Eibhear, the way that he so desperately wanted to see Izzy as a niece—which clearly was never going to happen. It really did drive that dragon crazy.

I was pretty disappointed with this book. Izzy and Éibhear's story was probably one of the most anticipated books in the series, but it just did not live up to expectations. I adore this series. They put the fun in dysfunctional family and How to Drive a Dragon Crazy is no different in that regard. What is different is that this is NOT a stand-alone. This is Izzy and Eibhear’s story (finally) and it pulls strings from all the previous books. I’d imagine that someone picking this up without having read the previous books would get lost or really confused when reading this installment.
