Gossie and Gertie (Gossie and Friends)
Gossie and Gertie are best friends. They splash in the rain, play hide-and-seek, and they dive in the pond together. Everywhere Gossie goes, Gertie does too. Or does she?
With charming illustrations and gentle text, Olivier Dunrea has created two lovable, sweet characters that will appeal to the youngest listeners.

The first dozen or so times I read this book to you, you had no interest in it whatsoever. Then, recently (around age 21 months), you started pulling it off the shelf and giving it to me. Presently, we are reading 4-9 times per night before bed, and occasionally during the day, if you happen to wander into your room and see it sitting out. Sometimes I bury it under your other books after you fall asleep, on the offchance that I might be spared a night of reading it. It hasn't worked yet...more

A little confusing, since the text is so simple. Maybe if Gossie had mud on her bottom when Gertie first started making her own way I wouldn't have gotten lost just because there wasn't a 'but' or an 'instead' in the segue. Even disregarding that, this isn't as strong as Gossie - there's just no feeling of dramatic tension and resolution, really. Judging by the condition of the two books from my library, the children agree with me that this isn't as desirable.
When followers don't always follow, leaders are apt to get upset. I liked that the leader at first learned to take a turn at following. Everyone is an expert in something and no one is an expert in everything. I loved reading a story to my kids to illustrate they do not always have to do what someone says they should. While I like obedience, I do not like absence of thought and the burying of oneself to appease another. I like that Gossie and Gertie were still friends even after an argument.

Gossie and Gertie is an animal fiction children's book about friendship. Gossie and Gertie are two ducks who are best friends and do everything together. They wear rain boots and follow each other everywhere. Gossie says, "follow me," and Gertie follows Gossie. The book is about two great friends who always stick together.
(Beginning Reader)
Gossie rhymes with bossy which is rather apt. I liked that Gossie and Gertie were identifiable by their different colored boots (Gossie wore red and Gertie wore blue) and a slight height difference. This was very cute, easy to read and teaches the lesson that it's okay to follow but it's also okay to do your own thing.

I love this book! It is the cutest little book! This would be great for read- alouds with your early learners.
The story of Gossie continues with his adorable friend Gertie.
Very cute and simple, both in pictures and text. Charming is the best word for the series.
Dunrea has a real gift at drawing emotions on geese. Even a very little child (and these books are just the right pace for babies and toddlers) can figure out what the geese are feeling by looking at the pictures.
And they're realistic, too. I can see an actual child bossing their friend like Gossie - and having a tantrum just like her too.

I love this one. So sweet, understated, and lovely. It reminds me of one of my favorite short stories: Summer Eve At "Rockall" by Karsten Hoydal, a similarly understated story of a pair of little siblings and the bond they share. I love to imagine these little goslings as my two little boys, following each other in their rubber boots, best friends.

No lesson to be learned, no moral to the story just two cute ducks in a clean, clean world. The illustrations are the complete oposite of Richard Scarey and Jan Bret. Closer to the Kipper books.
