The American is a memoir about the author. This book is about Franz-Olivier through-out his life and how he became the man he is now. He has been through pain and suffering, going around the world with his abussive father and his quiet mother along with his brothers and sisters.

During reading this book, i made a text-to-text connections. Franz-Olivier's abbusive father and his lonley life reminds me of You Dont Know Me by David Klass, a book about the same situation except the chara More...

The author's father was one of the American military men who landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy on June 6, 1944. It proved to be the most defining time in his life. The father is abusive to the entire family. The author spends a great deal of time being so angry with his father because of the abuse that he fantacizes how he would like to kill him.
