Dark Water: Beaming Smile by Kevin James Breaux
This is a short horror story that is especially good. It runs about 30 pages so it‘s a quick read. Dark Water takes place during a flood and Sarah is a wife and mother that wants out of her life. She meets Jasmine who used to be a baby sitter for her several years ago and they have a heart to heart on the roof of Sarah’s home while waiting for rescue.
I have also read 2 other full length books by Kevin Breaux and loved them also very much, Soul Born...more

I'm not a big horror fan, but after a conversation with the author, he had assured me that this was not a full-out horror fest. I gave it a read and ended up being pleasantly surprised. I kept expecting something terrifyingly freaky (what with all that thumping in the night), but Kevin James Breaux managed to keep the scare-level just right. It's a story about human nature, of a person filled with thoughts of 'what-ifs' and life choices made. There is despair and regret, moments of joy, however...more
I wasn't really sure what I was getting into when I started reading this novelette. That's a good thing. Especially considering the fact that I was NOT expecting what happened! Just twist after twist! I'm not much of a horror gal but HOLY SHAZBOK, I wanna know if anything is coming after this! Sequel? Full length novel?
Amazing, Kevin! A-MAZ-ING! I loved it. I'll share it.
Five stars from me :)

This is the second book I've read by this author, and they were each very different in tone and genre. I think he has an amazing voice and reach.
This story is very short, a sit down read that takes about an hour.
But, it focuses on the fears and guilt that humans have to face when they've reached their breaking point.
Sarah is a mother, trapped in a life she never wanted. A life, exactly like the one her mother before her had.

Just got my first real Kindle, and this was the first thing I read on it. Wow -- what a way to indoctrinate my Kindle!! This is a fantastic short that you can feel with all senses and is disturbing on a multitude of levels. For every "Ah-ha!" moment I had there was another surprise, and the climax knocked my socks off. There's horror within horror, and I hope there is a sequel or full-length novel that comes out of this, because I want more!
