Calvin and his Mom's boyfriend, Ledward, are good friends. When Ledward wins plane tickets, he invites Calvin to go on a man trip—they'll fly to Hawaii, the Big Island, for a day, and go deep-sea fishing. Wow! Calvin's never been on a plane, or any boat but his skiff. What a day—Calvin catches his first big fish, an ono. But that's nothing compared to what happens when Led ...more

Up until reading this Calvin Coconut book, my interest in this series focused mainly on the immersion in Hawaiian culture and the boy-friendly humor that have been at the center of each of the books I've read so far. In Man Trip, however, author Graham Salisbury shows us a whole new layer to Calvin's character that elevates this book from simple fluff to true literature.

Calvin begins the book faced with a dilemma. He's been asked to mow the lawn, but there are a bunch of bufos - or toads- lurkin

This is the first book in this series that I have read and I can't wait to read the others. In "Man Trip” Calvin and his mother’s boyfriend, Ledward, go on a fishing trip to the big island of Hawaii and Calvin has the time of his life. Calvin and Ledward, meet up with Ledwards friend Baja Bill who is deep sea fisherman. Calvin catches a forty pound Ono, which he keeps, and a huge Marlin that they tag and set free. Baja Bill says, "They’re beautiful creatures. To fight it and win? That's enough. ...more

This is a great addition to the Calvin Coconut series, and I think it will be just as accessible to those new to the series as Calvin's dedicated readers. In particular, I like that Ledward teaches Calvin to think twice about how he is treating the creatures around him - toads and fish - and to realize that being a man doesn't mean being cruel (even unintentionally). As always, I like that Ledward is supportive of the entire Coconut family and encourages Calvin to respect his mom. Although the d ...more

I continue to enjoy Calvin & his adventures a great deal. Boys will continue to love Calvin, the gross things he does (the book opens with toads & a lawnmower - enough said), & his boyish enthusiasms - this one will especially get any kids who are aspiring fishermen. From an adult perspective, I'm really enjoying seeing Calvin's relationship with his mom's boyfriend, Ledward, develop & grow. It's an important message about the real difference having a positive relationship with a ...more

I liked this book because Calvin went on an adventure to Hawaii and he went fishing for the first time and he caught an enormous fish called an Ono. And Calvin also got to tag a Marlin which is a big fish that can be up to more than 21 feet and it is really big. It is bigger than three Abraham Lincolns. Calvin is really funny and his enemy in this book is Shayla and Shayla likes to fool around with Calvin. The book is called Man Trip because Ledward took Calvin on an adventure to Hawaii. I think ...more

Calvin is the man of the house. His main job is mowing the lawn. But do you think he does it without his mom nagging him? What about the bufo toads, that he runs over in the tall grass? His mom's boyfriend Ledward wins plane tickets, he proposes a man trip for himself & Calving to go deep sea fishing. Calvin is so excited cause he's never flown before or gone deep sea fishing. After a wonderful day of fishing and fishing tales, can Calvin step up and become the man he needs to be for his fam ...more

I always enjoy the Calvin Coconut titles but this one is especially notable for the warm guy-to-guy relationship between Calvin and his mother's boyfriend Ledward. Calvin doesn't realize it of course, but Ledward is quietly looking out for him, serving as a positive male role model in the absence of one. Kids reading this one will wish for their own Ledward...or be reminded of the Ledwards in their own lives.

The 7th in the series about 4th grader Calvin, his family and friends in a small town in Oahu. This time the message is one of being kind to animals, from Calvin not squishing all the toads that live in his lawn to returning marlins back to the sea on a deep sea fishing trip with his mom's long time boyfriend. I've always liked this easier level series for its seemingly authentic portrayal of Hawaiian life.Illus. by Jacqueline Rogers are also great.

This was my first time with this series and I'm so glad I read it! It's a great read for reluctant boy readers as well as younger, avid readers. The setting is interesting (Hawaii), Calvin has typical feelings and problems (procrastinating on chores, looking for a male role model) and the story moves along nicely.

Calvin has just enough attitude to be man of the house despite being in 4th grade. His mom wants him to mow the lawn but Calvin does not treat the frogs in the yard kindly. After a fishing trip with mom's boyfriend, Calvin learns to appreciate and respect nature a little better. Boys will enjoy this next addition in the Calvin series.

Cute story about a 4th grade local boy in Hawaii who goes on a fishing trip with his mother's boyfriend. The added environmental/animal activism element is a nice touch. Good easy reader for boys age 7 and up. I'll probably try to find this series in the library and see if the 2nd grade boy I nanny enjoys it.

Graham Salisbury comes from a 100-year line of newspapermen, all associated with Hawaii's morning paper, the Honolulu Advertiser. Although a career as a newsman could have been possible, Salisbury chose to imagine rather than report. "I enjoy writing about characters who might have been. To me, exploring fictional themes, situations, and lives is a quietly exhilarating experience. There are times ...more
