It's very easy to criticize Barbara Cartland's work. They are formulaic and repetitive, and to a certain extent if you've read one you've read them all. That is true, but they can also be the equivalent of comfort food. I first discovered Barbara Cartland just before I hit my teenage years, and reading one of her novels takes me back to a time in my life that if not simpler was at least less stressful. A guilty pleasure.
