Proverbs by one of, if not the, greatest minds of the 17th century. I'm among the millions who have been influenced by this work over the centuries. The Pensees ("thoughts") were left individually on pieces of paper and have been compiled in different orderings. All the versions I've read are equally meaningful, so don't be intimidated. I found this at a used book store for a buck, and had to get it! This man was such a genius. The book is laid out in such a way that you can pick a topic like "Skeptics," "Philosophers," or "Christian Morality" and flip to that page and read. I've been picking and choosing AND enjoying! I must also say that I am SO Humbled by his God given brilliance.

From Section One:
"Jesus said great things so simply that he seems not to have thought about them, and yet so clearly that it is obvious what he thought about them. Such clarity together with such simplicity is wonderful."
"What a long way it is between knowing God and loving him."

Besides short bits of wisdom, this book is also a warning to perfectionists. Pascal never finished taking notes for his grand work--something I would have liked to have read!

On the religious side but when you subtract god this and god that, he has some really poignant things to same about human nature.

Aww, Pascal! The Heart has its own reasons that Reason knows nothing about... One of my basics

I read this for the phrases and thoughts more than the cynical religous view that drives it.

I still carry this around in one of my backpacks. Good aphorisms and subway reading.
