Solid piece of work about the collective stumbling of America. Addictive, fast moving and often beautiful prose filled with the dull ache of life's trials and the keen combustion of the heart's engine to keep moving forward. Spilker crushes in his debut.

When looking back over his written work, my husband will say this is the book he had to write. The semi-autobiographical first novel that everyone gets out of the way. He and this book are enmeshed. I was not surprised by the cultural references, the irony, the pseudo-apathetic Florida kid narrator, the punk rock, the rebellious undertones, the idiotic workplace. I was surprised at the multiple love interests, the violence, the church signs, and the campaign references. Well done, Mr. Spilker. Y
