The Claimed by Caridad Pineiro is the second book in her Sin Hunters series. This book focuses on Victoria Johnson, a Light Hunter and Christopher Sombrosa, a Shadow Hunter. The Light Hunters and Shadow Hunters have been at odds for centuries, probably because the Shadow Hunters feed from their Light Hunter cousins.

I must admit that this book was confusing at first. So many terms are thrown at the reader: Anaru, Quinchu, Cadres, Equinoxes, etc. I had read The Lost and it still took me a while to remember and understand what was going on. A lot of information is dumped in the first few chapters. Once you get by that, the story flows nicely.

The world of the Shadow Hunters and Light Hunters is intriguing. Essentially they are beings of energy but they have been affected by the small pox virus. The Shadow Hunters, since they feed off the energies of other Hunters manifest this virus in their auras. Christopher and his cadre of Shadow Hunters do not suffer from the pox as they have found an alternate way to feed off the energies of the earth. Christopher’s father Alex wants no part of these new ways. He is power hungry and seeks out the Quinchu (leader) of the Light Hunters.

Victoria the Light Hunter leader is nearing her Equinox (sexual maturity). She was to mate with Adam Bruno (The Lost) but he found someone on his own. Victoria is attracted to the handsome Christopher but she is unaware that he is a Shadow Hunter. He too, is unaware of her Light Hunter status. Victoria’s personal guard Rafael is not too pleased that she is attracted to Christopher and wants to do anything that would separate the two. He turns to Christopher’s ex-fiancée Maya for help.

I enjoyed this love story. It was beautifully done. The relationship built up slowly as Victoria and Christopher learned about each other. The love scenes were well done and I loved the descriptions of how their auras blended. The battle scenes were exciting and I was at the edge of my seat throughout.

A few little niggling things did bother me. I understand that these are not human characters, so a coupling during an Equinox would result in a pregnancy. It was just a little quick for me. I would have liked to see these characters having some peaceful time together. The ending was a little abrupt.

I’ll be looking for the next book in the series.

I’m a big fan of paranormal romance, so when I read the synopsis for Caridad Pineiro’s The Claimed, I knew I had to read this book. The synopsis sounded intriguing, and all in all, this was a book worth reading.

This is my first book by Caridad Piñeiro. Although I didn't read The Lost (Sin Hunters), prior, I was still able to follow the plot and storyline of the series. So I think this could be a stand alone. However,I think I will read book one for the foundation of the plot. The Claimed is my first book by Caridad Pineiro, and although it was out of my comfort zone of normal books I enjoyed it. It was a well written trip into a world I have not experienced before. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the other books of the series, and knew the entire back story.

Light and Shadow, good and evil come together and no-one, well almost no-one, is happy about it. Victoria is the heir leader to the Light Hunters and Chris is the heir leader to the Shadow Hunters. Victoria has a lot on her plate. She has to forge new relationships with people she isn’t sure she trusts, finds traitors where she thought there were friends, defy her parents and everything she’s been taught, and more.

The story has everything you could want in a love story and more. We have lovers, villains, treachery, pain, bloodshed and perhaps towards the end another love story in the making? It is definitely part of a series. Though I have not read the first one (yet!), there was enough back story for me to figure out exactly what was going on. The ending was mostly satisfying, but there were several major threads left dangling so that if you really want to know how everything ends up, you’ll have to continue to read (something I really dislike, but understand). Still, the story grabbed me, held on to me, and didn’t let go until the end. If you like paranormal romance with a touch of heat, definitely pick this series up.

Between the hot and sexy plot and the interesting characters, Piñero kept me turning the pages until way too late. What is the thing about Caridad's stories that make them tough to put down? To be sure there are traitors on both sides of the battle of this series, there are heroes and there are villains. Then there are those too stuck in their beliefs to get past their prejudice. In fact, if you stripped away the supernatural element this could be any human conflict where the sides are mostly constructed of misinformation, prejudice and fear. And, maybe humanity appearing in supernaturals so we can relate is the secret to Piñero's success. Maybe the distance afforded by the differences allows us to step back and see the conflict in different ways.

This is the second in the SIN HUNTER series, so, Piñero has to dump a lot of back story and intricate world building in the first few pages. After that she deftly brings two inimical forces together. She is really great at plotting, pace and action. Throughout I was stunned by the detail and complexity of her species development. It did stand alone without much confusion except I felt I needed a little more in the energy exchange/illness issues surrounding the species.

Caridad has a unique voice too; sometimes it is fine and others it comes out as corny and overblown. For example this made me laugh:

Victoria experienced the coming of morning. Her Hunter body was attuned to the forces of nature around her, warning her that the day would soon arrive. (p. 137)

While I would certainly state it more simply, this is a matter of style and choices. It's not a huge detractor from the story, with its wonderful place by the sea and the atmosphere Caridad infuses into each page. I also quoted from an uncorrected galley and have asked for clarification that this is in the final copy and have not heard back.

I recommend this and other books by Caridad as fun reads and this series is great for pool or beach side reading and fantasy.

April 24th was the release date for The Claimed, and I was the happy recipient of an early review copy. I have been following and religiously reviewing this series since its beginnings. Sins of the Flesh, Stronger than Sin and The Lost were the first three titles in this series. These are all set at the shore of New Jersey. It originally centered on the wonderful Carrera family, and now has branched out to have us meet the Hunters, both Light and Dark.

Caridad Pineiro's Claimed is a wonderful new addition to the paranormal romance genre with its superb writing style and predictable but addicting plotline. It's refreshing because it has ~~vampires~~ Hunters, violence and romance, but the two main characters don't constantly fall all over or abandon everything else for each other. Both Victoria and Christopher are strong characters with important leadership roles and although they are very much attracted to each other, they try not to let it affect their responsibilities and once they decide they will be together, they still keep their friends and clans their priority. The romance builds slowly as the two would-be enemies learn to trust each other and fall further in love.

The obstacles they must overcome to be a couple are similar to what has been done before but the way the author writes it, it seems to be something completely original. Victoria's clan, the Light Hunters, and Christopher's clan, The Shadow Hunters, have been mortal enemies for centuries and blame each other for much loss and pain they have endured. So it's of course inconceivable that each finds the other harmless and attractive and GASP - good. But then they realize what their clans have believed for centuries are lies and must convince their followers of the same. Of course, the technical leaders - their parents - don't believe them for a second and Christopher's father actually wages war on Christopher's followers and attempts to kill Christopher to keep him from joining his clan with Victoria's.

The new words - Equinox, Quinchu, etc didn't throw me at all, they were so skillfully weaved through the story, I felt like I'd known those words my whole life. Speaking of which, I felt like I'd known the characters for so long too, they just pop right off the page. Even the evil character like Maya was so well-rounded, by the end, you don't know whether to hate her or feel sorry for her or even root for her! The pace was very quick and it had me turning pages well into the night, so even at 350 pages, it was a quick read.
The only reason this book got 3.5 stars instead of 4 was that it explicitly described the sex scenes which really made me uncomfortable and I had to skip a couple pages sometimes. Obviously, it was an error of judgement on my part and with such a cover, I should have anticipated such scenes, but I can't help but have them affect my rating and my enjoyment of this book. So if you don't mind the heated scenes (all the way), I would highly recommend this book, especially to fans of Gena Showalter.

The previous book featured the story behind how Adam Bruno got his powers, but you don't feel like you missed anything by not having read that book, so this one can easily be read as a standalone. I wonder if the next book (if there is one) will follow Maya and her past and future. Alexander's past and how he came to be so unemotional would also make for a great story.

I enjoyed The Claimed. I liked spending time with Victoria and Christoper, and the plot had tension and danger that kept me reading.

Victoria is a powerful Light Hunter, and as such she's a strong character. She doesn't hold back and let Christopher do the heavy work. Yet she's also a caring leader of her people. Sometimes she's a little too caring, and that's her flaw (that's a good thing in a novel).

Christopher is sexy and dangerous as a powerful Shadow Hunter. Piñeiro says he's a cross between Eddie Cibrian and D.J. Cotrona. Keep that in mind as you're reading and you'll be panting as you're turning the pages.

For fans of the series, Adam Bruno from The Lost (Sin Hunters, #1) plays a role in The Claimed. It was good to see him and Bobbie again. I also enjoyed getting to know Ryan and Sammie, and look forward to reading more about them in the future. The book didn't end on a cliffhanger, but loose ends were left hanging. I read and reviewed, The Lost (Sin Hunter's #1) by Caridad Piñero and really enjoyed that book. The sequel can be read as a stand a lone, but it is better to read them in order. You get a better feel for the world if you do.

But it's been several months and the world-building was a little murky as I tried to get back into the series. Our characters are a species similar to human, but more. Our heroine is Victoria, a leader for her (Light) clan, who takes her energies from the water. She was promised as a child to marry Adam, the hero of the last book who married someone else. Victoria is ok with the fact that her arranged marriage isn't happening. She wants a love match. But her body is reaching its mating stage and she must find a suitable partner soon, to help ensure the future of her race.

Christopher is the son of Alexander, the last book's villain. He is working to heal his fellow Dark brethren by returning to the old ways of feeding for his race. His group of followers does not feed from humans and almost all traces of the pox are gone. He crosses paths with Victoria as they both happen across a boating accident. They work together to heal an injured human and they are attracted to each other immediately.

Once we get into the romance part of the book, it really gets easier to enjoy. There's a great forbidden element to the growing relationship between Christopher and Victoria. Both are leaders who want to protect their people, but neither can ignore their feelings and attraction for one another. Each has someone in their own faction working against them, which ratchets up the tension and the danger. But I really liked watching their tentative steps toward one another. The sexual tension is great. And I love the way the sex is done. It's hot in a regular sense, but with all the "extra" elements of their species, it goes a step beyond.

I liked both main characters. They were really a great deal alike. Both are dedicated to their people, but with visions for a better future. There are also some strong supporting characters and I have my fingers crossed that the next book will feature Victoria's friend Sammie and Christopher's captain, Ryan. And as for that world-building -- the longer I read, the more I acclimated to it. So that by the second half, I was firmly entrenched. After the slow start, I ended up liking it quite well. Once you can wrap your brain around the bigger picture, it's a good story, filled with action and romance. I do recommend that you read The Lost first. 4 stars.

Una trama che ricorda molto un Romeo e Giulietta in chiave fantasy, ma bisogna dare comunque merito all'originalità dell'ambientazione. L'elettricità (letterale e non) fra Victoria e Christopher è istantanea... e problematica. Vedere questi due personaggi combattere contro la natura (è il loro Equinox, il periodo dell'accoppiamento), i propri desideri e il dovere fa soffrire e sperare per loro. Anche i personaggi secondari sono ben delineati e fanno sperare in futuri romanzi a loro dedicati. Un libro che consiglio a tutte le amanti del paranormal romance desiderose di una buona trama oltre alla storia d'amore.

Although, this is the second book in the series, this is the first book I have read by Caridad Pineiro, I missed the first book in the series. This is a fast paced novel that will not leave you bored, there is plenty going on to hold your attention. This is a tale of two natural enemies inexplicably drawn together at the worst possible time. Victoria is of the Light, she has immense power and a responsibility to her people to mate with a male of Light also with great power, the fate of her clan depends on her. She takes her duties seriously and knows what is expected of her, but the romantic residing in her heart wishes she could have more, could have love. All her life she has done what is expected of her, only this time she wants something of her own, someone of her own. She has that chance but all she has to do is go against everything she has ever been taught and stand up to her parents and lead her people in a new daunting controversial direction. I really like Victoria, she is kind and loyal. She has a vision she is willing to risk all on but mostly she cares about her people. You can’t really hate on someone who gives so much to those she loves even at the sacrifices of her own happiness sometimes. She befriends humans and her guard she treats like family. She isn’t a slave to tradition and while she respects that her parents are the current leaders she knows her strengths and isn’t afraid to throw her weight around a little.

Chris is one of the most powerful of the Shadows, hunters that a plagued with the pox, they crave the energy that the Light can provide them. Chris has parted with his father’s Shadow clan and is returning to the old ways of hunting and has set up shop practically right in Victoria’s back yard. He knows what is right and what is needed and doesn’t let fear guide him or stifle him. I like his fearless attitude, he is willing to turn away from traditions hundreds of years old and go on alone with his small band of followers, he inspires. That takes tremendous cahonies, but he pulls it off. He leaves his father and his people behind and starts all over, and his gamble looks like it will pay off as his people become less and less tainted. I love a man that goes big. If you’re going to do it go huge! Chris knows what he wants and he goes for it, even if it may seem crazy like his attraction to Victoria. He shouldn’t want her, but he does, and that little, ok big thing with her being a Light, ehh, he knows he’ll get past it and make her see what is right as well.

A chance meeting at a scene of a horrific accident leaves both Chris and Victoria longing for more, but neither knows what the other is, but they suspect something. This leaves Chris and Victoria dancing around each other with their intense attraction; they have plenty of lust which scorches off the pages but as these two dance around each other one eye is busy checking the other out and the other eye is looking for any actions to prove their distrust to of one another. When the truth comes out they know that they cannot have each other the distrust runs too deep but the possibilities could save both clans. Not everyone is eager to see the feud between Light and Shadow end; which, makes this situation ripe for betrayal and war. Before the end of the book both Victoria and Chris will lose those they love.

I enjoyed this installment; it was a refreshing read after so many vampires and were’s novels in the paranormal genre. Instead of harvesting blood they harvest energy. This is not necessarily new, but it’s not as saturated, so it’s nice to take a break sometimes and it worked in this installment. I’ll probably even go back and read the 1st book and am eager to see where Caridad Pineiro takes us with this series, we were left with possibilities for the future and the traitors are still loose!

The Claimed by Caridad Pineiro is the second book in the Sin Hunters series. I have not read the first book (The Lost) but was still able to understand and follow this one. It can be read as part of a series or as a stand-alone.

This Claimed started very slowly and not very much seemed to happen at the beginning. It was readable but not terribly interesting. From the half-way point and especially towards the end the book really picked up and become a lot more interesting. There were a lot of action scenes which was great but at times it was hard to follow. Most of the problems I had with not only the action scenes but the book as a whole were the use of aura and colours, something that is heavily used in this book. It seemed to be mentioned in nearly every description and I struggled to picture all the aura’s, flashing lights and various other colourful things these ‘Hunters’ possess. It did work at but was over used.

The characters were nice. Victoria is smart, she has a lot of pressure put on her but she handles it well. I really liked the tension between her and her parents (a storyline that was unfortunately dropped half way through) these moments really allowed you to see her strength. Christopher was a nice guy and a good leaded. The relationship between them is nice (I am a sucker for forbidden romances) it had all the right elements but I just never felt the chemistry between them. What I liked was that they didn’t do anything stupid. I never doubted their trust in each other and never though their relationship would fall apart. It made a nice change as that is something we tend to see a lot in romance books.

I feel like I got to know Victoria really well. There was a lot of effort put in to making her a well-rounded and complete character, but the same cannot be said for Christopher. I felt like I didn’t know much about him at all (even though part of the book is told from his POV) without his half everything was not as intense as it could have been and I didn’t care about their relationship as much as I should have.

The Claimed is an interesting take on the PNR genre but somehow doesn’t have the explosiveness of other books out there. It was good and entertaining enough but didn’t have that wow factor. Despite that I will be checking out the first book in the series and the follow up to this one.

The Claimed has it all as far as I'm concerned. It isn't a cookie cutter paranormal romance where our hero meets the heroine, realizes they are mates and proceeds to chase and seduce her. I spent a lot of time contemplating this review. I went back and forth on whether to review it now of after I read the whole series. I decided to give an honest review of what I read so far.

In The Claimed we have Christopher and Victoria. Both are the same and yet so different. They both are children of leaders. They are both Hunters. One is Dark and one is Light. They are attracted to each other and it's forbidden because Chris's people have been known to hunt Victoria's for their light. You can't stop fate. These two are meant to be together to merge the light and the dark. To bring the two clans together. Some people are against this happening. Evil is at play and sides have to be chosen. They have to work together to save everyone and their love.

One of the things I disliked was the pace of the book. It starts off slow, picks up speeds, slows down. It's a repeating cycle. It makes it harder for the reader to read the book. Then some of the supporting characters are annoying and predictable. Take Rafael for instance. He is Victoria’s friend and guard who is secretly in love with her. It is a predictable storyline to have the friend be in love once they think they may have a chance at winning their heart.

I'm not saying I didn't like the book at all. The author writes a story that is interesting and appealing. I loved the concept. True opposites light and dark coming together to join as one. The relationship between Christopher and Victoria is intense and simple all at once. I like how the author writes the romance. It is not one that happens immediately, but builds up in the story.

My overall thoughts are that I was not in love with The Claimed. While fans of the series may love the book, those who choose to read each book as a stand alone may feel differently. Book series are a blessing and a curse for the readers. The blessing is that we get the chance to catch up on our favorite characters with each book. The curse is that if it is not written well enough to understand in one book you are forced to buy the series or be left with a bad taste in your mouth. So at this point what will I do? I think I will get the series. I haven’t given up hope that it is good. I think to understand everything you have to start from the beginning. Do I recommend this book? Yes, keep an open mind. Not every reader feels the same way.

I have to start by saying I think this is a series you need to read in order. I made the mistake of picking up book 2 and reading it first. I will tell you I was a little, okay fine totally confused about the world that Caridad create. Not that the world itself is confusing. I just have a feeling so much happened in book one that I would highly recommend you read The Lost first. Okay with that being said now for my review.

I had a hard time getting into this book but once I got about a third of the way in I couldn’t put it down. I’m not sure why it was so slow for me at the start as I know this series and really enjoy it. I do recommend it and look forward to the next installment.

Amazing.
I ate this story up! It was such a refreshing read. The storyline is so unique and each page just kept me so into the story I never wanted to put it down.

LOVED the conflicts Caridad threw at the hero and heroine. The sense of honor and loyalty---and love--was so intense I found myself reading faster and faster to find out what happened next.

The characters are intelligent, strong, and sexy, causing you to fall for them all! Again Caridad has created a female character that is an exceptional role model. Victoria, our heroine, is a leader, who can rule her clan without intimidation or having to be the “hard, cold bitch” that some tend to believe to be criteria to rule. Victoria is torn between the love of her family and what she knows is best for the future of her clan. She struggles to find the balance and deals with the knowledge that in order for there to be a future for her clan, she must break tradition and walk towards the shadow.

We first met Christopher in “The Lost”, though the details of his true nature were not revealed completely. We knew he is a “Shadow Hunter”, which automatically made him an enemy of the “Light Hunters”. However, not all is black and white. Christopher and his best friend and second in command, Ryan have found an alternative way of hunting and want peace for their clan. Christopher’s father, Alexander has other plans and only wants power regardless of who he has to kill in order to maintain it. Christopher must do what is best for his clan and hope that an all out war between his father and himself can be avoided, but when evil powers cloud the mind, is that even possible?

“The Claimed” is a story of finding your independence and standing up to those you love or may have loyalty to, to do what’s right! Both Victoria and Christopher feel the connection between them, but are wary of each other and at the same time they know this is the right thing to do. They put duty before themselves and before their attraction!

Filled with tension, love, and action, “The Claimed” is a fantastic continuation of the Hunter Series. The great news is that there is more to come. Great new characters to get to know better and I’m sure we’ll revisit with some old friends. I’m really looking forward to the next installment, though we have to wait a while. In the mean time, I’m going to catch up on a new favorite author!
