A great collection from early in Ríos's career. In my opinion, Ríos is the most accomplished Latino poet working with the traditional lyric today. This collection includes two of my favorites: "The Vietnam Wall," and "A Photograph from the Revolution: Guaymas to Nogales."

I love when Rios takes a folk tale, a mythological creation, and brings it to the page: when the singer confronts the tornado, and in another collection, the woman whose hair tangles her in a tree.

There are some beautiful endings to poems in this volume: "A fever moves / among these mothers, making noise" in a poem about sons who are hanged from telephone poles; "A voice comes out like scarves" in a poem about Edith Piaf.
