Jag’s Review: You know when you start a new book, it takes you a while to get ‘comfortable’ with it, to get to know the characters, the setting, the story. New Blood isn’t a book that falls easily into a literary category for me. It has the light and humourous qualities found in Chick Lit but it’s got an edge of Paranormal to it. Chick-anormal? Para-chicklit? LOL I don’t know what to call it, but it’s a great mix and quite unique from other books in this genre.

When we first meet Emma she’s going through the motions of her life, punching the clock on her night shift job, dealing with her lacklustre long-term boyfriend and keeping up with her friends. Her life is stuck on cruise control until, under some very unusual circumstances, she ‘meets’ Alex. When Emma falls victim to an accident, Alex is strangely nearby and quick to change her into a vampire and that’s when her life shifts from boring to well a little crazy.

Emma is a great character, I could absolutely relate to her insecurities, her boyfriend woes and her quick wit, in real life I think we’d be friends. I really love how she handles her new vampire status, with humour and a casualness, like this is not going to change who she is. She makes mistakes, learns to deal with her new situation and grows in confidence as a vampire as the book progresses. The realism with which the author tackles all of these changes is a really refreshing departure from the usual dark, serious tone of vampire novels.

I found the storyline in the first half of the book to be entertaining but maybe a little light on plot. Little did I know, but this was just a set up for the second half which was action-packed and full of twists and turns. This book was not predictable and it didn’t take me long to realize that many things weren’t what they appeared to be. Throughout New Blood the characters, the dialogue and the situations has me smiling and laughing. This is most definitely not your typical vampire novel, and that’s a good thing.

The only critique I have for New Blood was the lack of chemistry and sexual tension between Alex and Emma…I just wasn’t feeling it. I’m a huge fan of the build up, the flirting, the longing, the unresolved sexual tension…the swoony boy and the girl who wants him. I missed it here. I do however, sense that we may get a love triangle in this series’ future and I’m looking forward to that RAWR!

At the end of New Blood you won’t find a nail-biting, omg cliff hanger, there was something even better…mystery, unanswered questions and fun, relatable characters that you’ll care about and want to read more about. This first book is a great start to this series, I’m putting it on my second shelf!(less)

For a cheapy book on Amazon (less than £1 when I bought) this book was an ok deal. The story was nothing new really and was reasonably ok, but it was not as spectacular as I thought it would be based on other reviews.

I really enjoyed this light, entertaining and occaisonally surprising read. It’s a short novel, a length I really like because you can read it in one evening when the rest of the family is watching TV.

The Review
Wow, I loved this book, Donna pulled me in from the beginning, the characters were ones that will stick in my mind for a while, Emma had balls, there is no other way of saying it, I thought that being changed would make her more, well, like a vampire, but no, she tried very hard to keep her humanity in as much as she could, this book goes against the grain where vampires are concerned, firstly she has a friend who is a werewolf, that does not happen much, well not in anything I have read, secondly, her best friend could not be put under a compulsion, which was funny, and her friend stood by her too, which was nice to see, thirdly, there was no major Vampire love story, there was some romance in this book, but not loved til the end of time kind.
I didn’t like Alex towards the end, I might be wrong but he seemed a little weird to me, I can’t wait to read the second book Wild Blood, I hope we see more of David in that one, I loved David, won’t say no more, I had one small issue which I can’t really discuss in a review, it’s not a bad thing, I just wanted more of a back story on Alex and Michael especially after the revelation ¾ of the way through the book, can’t say too much, spoilers ruin it for some people, You will know what I mean when you read it, so go on and get yourself a copy, Would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes their vampires slightly different, 4.5/5

I love a good vampire book, they are what got me into the genre in the first place. So when I get a vampire book, I get excited in general, they always seem to enhance my love for the genre. I think part of the reason why I enjoyed this is because it is not just a straight up vampire action packed story, it's one that has more than that, it has a little bit of humor in it, and I love when there is humor in a book.

I want to start off by saying to book has a great pace to it. From beginning to end I was interested in what was going on within it's pages. Not only that but I didn't really find a lot of lag time or places where I felt anything was lacking. I appreciate books that keep me involved and invested in them from beginning to end. I also thought the writing was pretty good as well. It's hard enough to write a book that fits the parameters of a paranormal book, what with all the world building that has to be explained to the reader. But when an author can do that and add a bit of humor into the story, I find it only enhances the books appeal.

Emma is someone who I think anyone can relate to. We have all pretty much had those moments in life when things are just so routine, and you are just praying for a little bit of excitement to come your way. Although I'm not sure Emma would have ever wished for the kind of excitement she found, but either way it definitely changed her routine and opened herself up to a world that certainly changed her life.

Emma is a great character, and I think mainly the reason why she is such a great character is because she is able to grow so much over the course of the book. She starts out one way and then by the end of the book she has grown as a person while still maintaining the fundamentals of who she was to begin with. In some ways she reminds me of one of my friends, with the way she responds to some people, she has a great quick wit, one that I think I would enjoy.

I thought overall the plot really got super exciting in the last half of the book, and it was from that moment that I literally couldn't put the book down. I love a book where I can't see what is going to happen next, and I get so wrapped up in what might happen next, that I can't help myself but to start guessing. Sometimes I felt like I had things figured out and then I curve ball would come my way and I would find out I was wrong.

Overall, this was a really fun read for me, from beginning to end. I think the humor really helped "sell" the book for me. I think without it, the book would not have worked nearly as well. If I had to complain about one thing is that I wish that there was more between Emma and Alex. It's not that there wasn't an attempt, just something about it didn't feel as organic as it could have. For that reason the book gets a "good" rating. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a little humor in their books, but especially for those of us who are partial to vampire books! (less)

Her night starts normally enough. Emma spends the evening at work. Her job at the advertising agency is not like they portray on TV. Most of the work is tedious and time-consuming. Then along comes the night supervisor, dropping on her desk a rush job which keeps her late.

When I first started this book I did a lot of eye rolling. It was pretty corny and cheesy. I thought the main character was kind of stupid and irritating. I enjoyed reading this book. Starting a new life as a 'recently turned' vampire, Emma has a lot to think about. The humor throughout New Blood is quite entertaining. The characters are likable. The story is quite good. This book gives a different take on vampires. Add a human roommate, a werewolf and a vampire to the mix, and you end up with quite the combination. I recommend this book. Now on to read the next book, Wild Blood.

I loved this book to no end. I was giggling constantly through the whole thing. This takes a bit of a fresh look at vampires and what happens when a human becomes one. The story zips you right along until you notice that you're done with it.
