Cute concept: famed international correspondent Georgie Anne Geyer promises her pet cats that she will learn their sacred histories by jetsetting around the globe to places where cats were once revered. The journalism that takes her Egypt, Burma, Thailand, and Japan is incidental-- a cover, really-- for this study of the history and myth of sacred cats. Geyer's love for her cats and chatty, meandering tone were enjoyable, but the books got a bit too self-indulgent by the end. And the last sectio ...more

Recommends it for: Anyone interested in cat lore and sappy cat stories
Georgie Anne Geyer, a foreign correspondent with vast knowledge of world affairs, lends some of her globe-trotting expertise and connections around the world to pursue the origins of the domestic cat. If you care to sift through the author's overly sentimental, fanciful speculation on the history of her pet cats, you'll find some interesting tidbits on the history of domestic cats worldwide. Contains a one- to two-page description of most of the commonly accepted cat breeds, with something about ...more
I had big hopes for this book. It's been on my to-read list forever.

Unfortunately, it missed its mark. Or the mark I had hoped for. I wanted a history of the biology and cultural significance of cats and what I got was a book written by a woman who was only interested in her own two cats' origins. She journeys around the world and along the way, speculates how her two felines are connected.

I never got any real sense of the various locations she went to, or any new information regarding cats, onl
Considering I am a huge cat-fanatic, I was overly ecstatic when I picked up this book. However, I barely made it through the first section where the author takes an achingly long time to describe her own cat, in terms that I rarely agreed that a cat should be seen with. I lost count of the number of times she used the word "languorous" and I was deeply disappointed with the overall theme of the book. Again, this is coming from a lifelong lover of cats. Very disappointed.
Excellent weaving of the dicatspora of the Cat and human history.
