This was a gentle and quick read, devoured in a morning accompanied by a cup of tea!
We enter the story with the murder already committed. The body identified by a fellow colleague. Readers are then taken along a journey of establishing what kind of character the deceased was, potential suspects, motive and then finally evidence.

When literary publisher, Laurence Barlow, is murdered, it is up to Detective Inspector Harriet Ware to find the killer. The title of this book intrigued me as soon as I saw it--and as I read the book I was drawn into the multiple story lines that Gervase Shorter intertwined to tell the story of the publisher's murder. And up until the very end, I was in the dark wondering who-dun-it--there is nothing better than that for me when I am reading a mystery.

Don’t be fooled by that title. This isn’t a step by step guide on how to write crime fiction but a murder mystery. Shorter’s novel offers one murder case that is a little complex and the detectives investigating the crime are certainly not short of suspects.

There is a lot going on in this book. I had a hard time at first with the transitions between the story and the other characters who were writing stories. I did figure it out and following was much easier from there. I found the stories the characters were writing as interesting or more so then the main story. I really want to know what happens in the Sci-fi story and I don’t really care for that genre.

This review is not for the entire book as I have only read the first 100+ pages. I tried reading this a number of times but I really could not get into the story. I thought the investigation to Larry Barlow's murder is too complex so the title is not right for me. I mean, if it is a crime fiction for the beginners, the story should be simple right? The story has too many characters and a lot of different situations are presented. I know they wouldn't be in the book for nothing but frankly, it wa...more
A story about investigating the murder of a publisher - interspersed with passages from books being written by peripheral characters - a trick which didn't really engage me, but overall well written.
