This book is not quite as advertised. I was expecting a strong woman bringing a man to his knees sort of thing. When I found out that the woman in question wasn't going to be a crazy man hating dom but a gentle torture-them-with-pleasure type I was even more intrigued, but that's not quite accurate either. Instead Devnar and Melania are a very typical strong, aggressive, dominate manly-man and feminine somewhat helpless damsel. When I found out that the woman in question wasn't going to be a crazy man hating dom but a gentle torture-them-with-pleasure type I was even more intrigued, but that's not quite accurate either. Instead Devnar and Melania are a very typical strong, aggressive, dominate manly-man and feminine somewhat helpless damsel. They are both extremely likable characters and I really enjoyed some components of their romance but just be warned: HE spends far more time dominating HER than the blurb would have you believe.

Other than that my feelings were rather mixed. I liked the story, I liked the characters, I liked their cat-and-mouse game (especially when she had the upper hand on him), I found the setup sexy (if sometimes a little contrived) but I basically hated all of the sex scenes ^_^;;;; You see ... I have issues with the word cunt. I don't find it sexy. At all. And using it in a sex scene is like flipping a switch for me, complete and total turn off. I can be seriously into a pairing and itching to read them getting it on only to have the c-word appear and-- Game Over.

Which was a problem here because the author uses it a lot. Practically bludgeons you to death with it, in fact. Cunt cunt cunt cunt cunt ... all the way through. I simply do not understand the appeal.

Mind you I'm not a huge fan of the word pussy either, but I can deal with it ... I mean, you got to call it something right? *sigh* I should probably stick to m/m ... but it *is* possible to write m/f smut without using words that most people associate with disrespect and/or violence against women .... just saying.

Also vaginal lubrication is frequently referred to as "cream" here.... ummm ew. Ladies, if that wetness in your panties when you read one of these books is "creamy" please see your doctor. That's not arousal, that's an infection. I find the word "juices" likewise silly to the point of unsexiness, but again that's something I can deal with. Cream... mmmmm not working for me. I kept thinking MonistatMonistatMonistatMonistatMonistatMonistat ^_^;;;;

But I did sincerely like Devnar and Melania's relationship. Particularly the bit towards the end when Devnar is pretending to be the perfect submissive slave in order to protect Melania (Raaa~~~ this was hot ^.^)

One last thing. You know those scenes at the end of books where minor characters or villains appear to explain the entire plot to you? The big reveal scene? Yes? Well this book does it twice. Same scene, same explanation. You have to read it twice because Devnar and Melania are separated and god forbid there be a fade-to-black moment?

Anyway 3.5 stars. It's a good book and if you don't have the crazy specific porn nitpicks I do, you'll probably like it :) (less)

This was by far the sexiest, hottest, and flat out just the most fun I have had reading in a very long time. Ok, I might have stuttered a bit there. This was the hottest book I have read this year! This was the hottest book I have read this year! And I have read some hot fiction. I’m one of those women that doesn’t mind her erotic fiction, actually erotic! I don’t beat around the bush. If I am going to read sex in my fiction, I want to have an orgasm along with the heroine. And I think I had multiple orgasms while reading this story. And it wasn’t just the sex! The story had me sitting on the edge of my seat and biting on the inside of my cheek a little. It has such a hot and impressive cast of characters. And you had a female villain. I LOVE FEMALE VILLAINS! It is like watching wicked woman only in a book!

Let me first start off by saying that whenever I read that there might be some male on male action. I tend to avoid it. And I’m not by any means homo phobic. I just tend to feel like a scene with two men might just drop the Alpha male status for me about 50 degrees. WOW! I was so wrong. The first scene with Melania, Devnar, and Khilam… Can I just say that I actually felt like I had walked into my Kindle and was living that scene right along with them. WOW! OH MY GOD WOW!

But like I said before it was not just about the sexual content. Though I will say again it was the best sexual content that I have read almost in FOREVER! I digress. The story, I felt such tenderness from the love story, and I was swept up in this intergalactic tale that had me wishing that this all was really taking place somewhere in a galaxy far far away! I have a few quotes that really grabbed at me. They made me hang on to the moment and it was where I got deeply involved in the main characters.

“Because you aren’t mine.” Her breath came out in a soft sob. “Because you will belong to the empress, and I cannot have you. I’m so alone, and I cannot have you.” He froze above her, and to her shame, she felt tears welling in her eyes.

Be still my heart Ann had me at ‘Hello’. I can’t say enough about this story other than I owe the author a major thank you for allowing me to review this book. This may not be a clinical break down of the plot line, and full character development or a 3000 word book review. But I think my review of this book is honest, and truthful as to how much I adored this book. Next cycle I am able to buy books again I will be buying up everything I can of Ann Mayburn, a new go to author for all my erotic ménage needs!

Okay, this books is one of the most extensive short-reads I think I've ever read. There is a ton of story in this book... the world that the author paints is massive. There isn't a single 'of' spared in the telling of this story... if it's in there, it's needed.

For a lot of scify books the author really has to do a lot of world building to get the reader's mind correctly placed for the tale they wish to weave. If not done well, the char building and even the story can get lost in the facts of t...more

This isn't my first Ann Mayburn read, but this one was so very different from the other one I read. This one was really good as well. So imaginative. The author said there will be more from this world, so I look forward to them. I don't read much sci-fi, or interplanetary love, or whatever you want to call this. It was a group read, which is why I read it, but it was really a good story.

It's always interesting to me to read stories where men are attracted to men and women, gender doesn't matter....more This isn't my first Ann Mayburn read, but this one was so very different from the other one I read. This one was really good as well. So imaginative. The author said there will be more from this world, so I look forward to them. I don't read much sci-fi, or interplanetary love, or whatever you want to call this. It was a group read, which is why I read it, but it was really a good story.

It's always interesting to me to read stories where men are attracted to men and women, gender doesn't matter. Obviously, they can only have children with women, but it's not unusual for men to be attracted to men and to act on that attraction, with no fear of negative consequences. Such is the case in this story. Part of that is necessity. On Devnar's home planet, women are scarce, so it's common for a woman to bond with multiple men. If the men can be kept busy with each other at the same time, that works out for everyone. :-)

I was surprised at the reason Devnar was kidnapped. And I was surprised at the ruthlessness of the Kyrimian people. Imperfection meant you could never be anything and you likely would never bear a child. It was a testament to Melania's strength that she rose to her position of breaker. By all accounts, she was nothing like the Kyrimian ideal. She had mismatched eyes, small breasts, short stature, very few curves. The fact that she was given up by her parents so they could try for another child was heartbreaking. I realize that's what life was like on her planet, but it's still so sad that life was diregarded and perfection controlled who had what.

The whole "trainer" and "breaker" concept was interesting as well...the idea that being chosen to be trained to be a concubine was one of the greatest things that could happen to someone in another class. It's also interesting that a concubine was often more loved and cherished than a spouse. But that's probably due to my Western upbringing and ignorance of concubines here on Earth.

I was glad that the plan failed, but on one point it succeeded: Devnar bonded to Melania. I didn't like that he did it without her consent, but I understand why he had to do it. She never would have consented, no matter how much her heart truly wanted it. I was also glad that Khilam got to be an ambassador to Devnar's planet,a so he got to go with them. I think Devnar and Melania would have been fine on their own, but Khilam added an additional bit of fun. And some hot man loving. :-)

And it was fun to see Devnar turn the dominance tables on Melania.

Overall, a great story, some hot sex, and some great characters. Like I said, I look forward to more from this world.(less)

In order to train Devnar, the warrior prince from Jensia, he's sent to Melania, a known breaker.

Based upon the terms "breaker" and "concubine", I figured this would be sadistic BDSM training session. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Melania's style of breaking a concubine is with pleasure and sweetness. She's not exactly a pushover, but she is able to bring amazing results through her dedication and creating a relationship with the concubine.

Devnar is a concubine she's never experienced. First, he is from a different world than her home planet of Kyrimia. Second, he has not a single submissive bone in his body. Third, he doesn't want to serve. Melania's life is on the line if Devnar isn't ready for the Empress to look over within a month. If this isn't enough, both of them are caught up in interplanetary intrigue wrought with power struggles, slavery and betrayals.

Ms. Mayburn pulls me into this story by showing the multi-faceted aspects of the two main characters, Melania and Devnar. I liked learning about their past and how it shaped who they are – both are strong survivors. The chemistry or should I say, bio-chemistry between the two caused me to exothermically combust too. To have her add another male into the mix where there was sharing between all three, I nearly levitated out of orbit.

I liked the dominance plays, which had me drooling. The added feature of a soul mate could have been hokey as it's been overdone in so many paranormal romance novels. In this one, it was blended in well. I felt it added to the story rather than detracted from it. I learned enough about the two worlds that I want to read more. I want to know about the "abominations". I want to learn more about the rebels. Who are these regulators and why do they have a language which is not translatable? What are they hiding?

These questions make me hope Ms. Mayburn returns to this world and provide at least another story. I would be ecstatic if it turns out to be a couple more. If you enjoyed Ms. Anne McCaffrey's mind melding fantasy stories and Ms. Cheryl Brooks' Cat Star Chronicles' addictive chemistry mixed with some smexy Ms. Cherise Sinclair BDSM Masters of Shadowlands kinkiness, I recommend you read this book. I know I'll be pestering the talented Ms. Mayburn for follow up books.

Until a new book in this world comes out, I'll be rereading my favourite parts which have already been dog-eared on my Kindle. Basically, erotic romance lovers who enjoy some hot addictive triad fantasy, buy this book now. My only warning is to let your significant other know to be prepared when you finish reading this book(less)

I have to say that I picked this book up in a fit of cover lust. I’ve read and enjoyed Ann Mayburn before but I really don’t generally read sci-fi and am really not fond of subjugated males as a plot device so I started this with a little trepidation but it was unfounded. Almost immediately the story and the characters gripped me and dragged me through the plot at breakneck speed – I couldn’t put it down.

So Prince Devnar, virile dominant male, is captured by another race and is handed over to Melania, a ‘breaker’, for training so that he can become concubine to her Empress. Devnar doesn’t have a submissive bone in his body and Melania, despite embracing the role of domme which has been forced upon her, is actually naturally deeply submissive. Devnar is controlled by powerful aphrodisiacs and electric shock restraints but, despite all this, his naturally dominant nature is coming over in waves and Melania finds this highly intoxicating.

So, we have a battle of wills and a deeply, deeply erotic journey to take and holy hell if this doesn’t have some of the hottest m-m-f ménage sex I think I have ever read. The scenes with Devnar, Melania and Khilam were so hot I swear I almost caught fire.

There’s a whole lot of subterfuge going on and the storyline explodes with conspiracy, double dealings and things are not what they seem but Devnar and Melania have bonded deeply and Devnar will do anything to save her.

This is only my second ‘erotic fantasy’ read and it’s infinitely better than the first and this book has made me consider reading more of this genre which is one I normally shun.

I'll admit it. The cover got me. I'm not too proud to say it.

Quite often when I read erotic stories I'm underwhelmed with the plot. I mean I understand that it isn't supposed to be plot heavy, because that's not the point, but I like to have some reason for the story to exist beyond the sex. We also have politcal intrigues, prejudices and social systems that will make you shake your head till it nearly falls off. But let me start at the beginning.

Devnar is the prince of his world and a warrior at heart. When he finds himself as a slave intended to become the concubine of the queen on a foreign planet his first instinct is to fight with all his might. But when he is assigned to the petite breaker Melania everything slowly starts to change. .So here we have a captured man who is forced to become a sex slave of a woman he never met. His "breaking" is full of forced pleasure and mind games with the only goal of bringing him to accept his purpose. I didn't really like this theme. It made me uncomfortable to see him forced to feel pleasure in such a way. It is disturbing to think about something like that happening. The whole procedure was a mix of pain as a penalty for unwanted behavior and a constant onslaught of sexual stimulation. Well, I admit that my feelings were mixed while reading about it. Some scenarios where sexy as hell but I always had this doubt about the rightness in my mind. This is a very touchy topic and it is nothing for the light of heart.

Melanie is more than just being a breaker. Her life didn't treat her fair but her goal is to make the wrongness that happened to some of her subjects better in her own way. She doesn't have much of a choice either- breaking Devnar is her only chance of ever get a concubine for herself. Her appearance is seen as ugly and unacceptable flawed on her world so when Devnar shows real appreciation for her body she can't believe her eyes. It doesn't hurt that he has his own kind of appeal (see yummy cover *sigh*).

As I already mentioned the relationship between these two starts in a rather unusual and controversial way. They stand on opposing sides and both have an own agenda. When the forced pleasure morphs into something natural and real the emotions start to change too. The mix of primal attraction and mutual compassion is breathtaking and well the sex scenes are unbelievable hot. Mayburn knows how to set the pages on fire. We a vast variety of encounters without drifting off into unnecessary repetitions.

The plot itself is strongly woven around the science fiction setting. The different cultural and social systems are introduced on the go and I never felt overwhelmed by the information. I loved that we learn all these tidbits about Melania through Devnar's eyes. The setting itself is disturbing in so many ways but it shows us how wrong society can go even when it started with the best intentions.

The Breaker's Concubine is a very sexy and erotic read with some controversial plot points. It has a great setting that wraps seamlessly around the plot about intrigues and inhuman politics. This book will take you to your limits and before you even noticed it pushed you over. I dare you to give it a chance.

Initially i was dubious as to how this (forced sexual encounter) was going to pan out but it was deliciously and unabashedly tame compared to what i was expecting.

I liked this book a lot. It was interesting and there were a few unique concepts that helped move the story along at a fresh pace. What I really liked about it is that, despite the blurb, this book isn't full of one character seriously dominating over another. The two main characters, Melania and Devnar actually do a nice job of switching back and forth. They both have their moments where they're the alpha in a sense. The fact that they were both from two different planets also helped to make this story really enjoyable. I loved finding out all the compressions and contrasts (of which there were many) between their two different societies and cultures. It was cool seeing their different perspectives on situations, how they reacted to something by the way they'd been brought up. Mayburn doesn't bombard you with all of these details, but lets them subtly slip through the story which is nice. I never felt like I was being force fed information which is the worst. There were very few things I found annoying, or didn't like, about this book. One of them is how in the beginning Melania is described as having a gorgeous face, yet an "unattractive" body, however throughout the rest of the book everyone calls her an "ugly boy". It would have been nice if they'd at least kept the reference of her face being pretty, not because I want her to be pretty, but because it would have helped tie in the story. Not only that, but it would have also helped selling her stature. She started off as being one of the best known breakers, after all. They weren't attracted to her, but they respected her, and in a society like that I just feel like they would have clung to her "one" attractive feature more in order to justify themselves. My one other issue was how quickly the two of them fell for each other. However, that only threw me for about a page or so before I got over it and back into the story. The details were really good, and the villains were really bad. The ending worked out great, was convincing, and left me feeling satisfied. I would recommend reading this one. There's action, adventure, romance, and yes, sex. But at the heart of it there's a story about two people who are missing something in their lives that they find in each other. Devnar helps give her confidence and Melania helps to ground him. It's a really sweet exchange to watch.

You couldn't get hotter than this book. Even J.R.Ward and Gena Showalter need to take lessons from Ann Mayburn. Plus, this wasn't just about how hot the story was (and yes, I'm pleased to say the cover matches the tale) this book also has fantastic characters from the mouth-watering Devnar to the horrible villain Lady Grenba. This was a great story, I wish there were more books to make it a series. Great storyline,

A prince is kidnapped along with several of his men, they are warriors and taken by a slave/handler from another planet, 'a woman' with a very mean streak.. but a breaker is brought in to train the prince for her new master the emperess of the planet. This was a terrific book! I mean come on the Cover alone deserves 3 stars ;) Ann Mayburn created a world, characters, and storyline that will suck you in. Fantastic world building - I could picture it so well. The conflict between the races and socials classes was very interesting to say the least. The characters you fell for right from the start. Sex and politics, love and intrigue, plus some very hot MMF scenes this book is a winner. This is sci-fi erotica like I have never scene it. The sensuality of the story was incredible. The chemistry between Devnar, Melania and Khalim was outstanding, I could feel the heat emanate off these three. Ann Mayburn will be an author I watch for in the future.

Melania is a talented breaker, but she has fought for everything in her life after being born with the birth defect of two different colored eyes. Growing up she also never developed into the curvy woman her country prizes. A caste system is in place on the planet and at any time, you can find your life taken from you. Melania knows this and does everything by the book, but also has a kind and good heart.

Breakers are trained to help abused, reluctant and scared Novices to get past their fear of being a concubine and to embrace their inner sexuality. The ultimate gift is to be a treasured Concubine or to own a Concubine. Melania is a breaker that builds up these Concubines, but at no time can she orgasm or feel pleasure with them even as she has sex, oral sex and many other acts with them. Off worlders are never in this program and it is against the regulations, punishable by death.

When Melania and Devnar meet, there is instant attraction, but both cannot give into those feelings. Devnar because he wants freedom. Melania because she wants to live. It doesn’t help that Melania has been promised her own Concubine if she can get Devnar prepared in 30 days and he also catches the Empresses attention. On top of that Devnar’s race bonds with their mates, so he has a fear he will bond with his captors and not want to leave.

Whoosh! There are a lot of little details I had to get out there before I could tell you what I thought.

Right off I loved Devnar, but he isn’t the greatest prince in the world. His planet isn’t the best place to live and it doesn’t sound like the planet is safe, especially since his sister was taken raped and bonded with a lot of men. But I give him props for hunting all those men down and killing them. But he is after all robbing a supply ship even if it is a trap. When they capture him, they keep him and two of his men, killing the rest who did not escape. There were hints also that the men share their women with other men who have bonded with them because there is such a shortage of women. It never came to much fruition.

Melania had my sympathy over being shunned over eye colors and under development, but I couldn’t gage just how under developed she was. Often she was compared to a young boy for her lack of breasts and short petite size. But during the love scenes, she obviously had breast, just not big “jugs” like all the other women in the book I guess. Melania has a kind spirit, but in the world she lives, she has had to be the dominant for her job. In her off time, she chooses dominants as her sexual partners.

So when these two get together, sparks fly. It’s really not a long story, but they jump way to fast into a love relationship. Devnar knows shortly after being with her that she is his mate. It takes Melania longer to accept it. It didn’t seem to flow when Devnar was still collared by Melania, but he was dominating her. I just couldn’t buy the switch or feel that it naturally took place. Many times Devnar could have overcome Melania. Not sure how far he could have escaped, but there were tons of times he could have initiated it.

The story has an underlining political plot that was interesting, but not as involved as I wished it to be. Overall I liked the story, but could have seen this being a longer novel with more intrigue, danger and of course more sex.(less)

I was so excited to read this book because the cover is gorgeous. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. It just didn't flow well for me in some parts. The book has sci-fi, mystery, romance, and what you'd expect with a cover like that, smut. This science-fiction erotic book pushed me a little beyond my comfort zone. The world-building saved the day. The story introduces foreign cultures and ways of life in a different universe(I'm assuming). It's not Western cultural values implanted on another world. I must say I often go for BDSM erotica where the female character always plays the submissive role and when I found out that the heroine in The Breakers's Concubine was the dominant, I had second thoughts about the book but I'm very, very pleased that I didn't pass up on it!

One thing I absolutely loved about this book is the cover art lol, I am definitely not into submissive males, but I have to say WOW-from the artistic perspective.
