Peter Englundin "Suuren sodan vuodet" (WSOY, 1996) on populäärin historiankirjoituksen mestariteos. Massiivisen tietokirjan päähenkilö on Erik Jönsson -niminen ruotsalaismies, jonka säästyneet päiväkirjamerkinnät avaavat lukijalle mikrotason näkymän erään ihmisen elämäntarinaan 1600-luvun Euroopassa.

Englund kertoo samalla 30-vuotisen sodan (1618-1648) tarinan, joka kaikessa kauheudessaan ja kaoottisuudessaan lienee yksi Keski-Euroopan historian tuhoisimmista ajanjaksoista. Saksassa vastaavaa ei

I admit, since I'm a Pole, it was a bit weird for me to read the story of the successful, brave Swedish army and its adventures during the 30 Years War. The book starts with retelling of the Battle of Warsaw in 1656, some years after the 30 Years War, then goes back in time to the beginning of life of Erik Dahlbergh, a man responsible for many later successes of Swedish military, goes through the whole 30 Years War period and ends where it started.

So the war with Poland is only mentioned, but s

Peter Englundin Suuren sodan vuodet kertoo sekasortoisesta 1600-luvusta keskittyen erityisesti Erik Jönsson-nimisen(myöhemmin aateloituna Dahlbergh) nousukkaan nuoruusvuosiin 30-vuotisen sodan vuosina. Sodan lisäksi Englund käsittelee 1600-luvun ihmisiä ja elämää tuolla sotien vuosisadalla. Eglund kirjoittaa historiaa helpon tuntuisesti, kadehdittavan kevyesti, aivan kuin hän itse olisi elänyt kirjan tapahtumat. Kirja onnistuu sekä viihdyttämään ja koskettamaan sek ...more

After I read the first chapter, I was a bit worried. Englund starts the book with a fairly detailed account of the Battle of Warsaw in 1656. And I feared that the rest of the book would be much of the same. Thankfully Englund doesn’t limit his scope to warfare in the 17th century, and between descriptions of battles during the Thirty Years' War, he focuses on the political, economic and social transformations of the period. When Englund muses on the Swedish educational system or the troubles of ...more

I don't think this one is translated to English...it's a shame!
This is even better that the other Englund-book that I reviewed...I'd give this one 6 stars!

Fantastic descriptions of life and war in 17th century Europe based mostly on letters and eye-witness reports from the time.

Förmodligen den bästa boken om det trettioåriga kriget från ett svenskt perspektiv. Men visst saknas balans. Vad det tyska riket, habsburgarna, påven, fransmännen osv. tyckte och tänkte lämnas utanför.
