This was such a good collection of myths. Vernant's retellings were utterly enjoyable. He covers everything from the creation of Earth and humans, through the myth of Pandora's box, Prometheus, the Trojan War, Odysseus' travels, Dionysus (who is possibly my favourite Greek god, so thank you for including him <333), and the tale of Oedipus. It was a really solid collection and a great starter for the basics of some of the most iconic Greek myths.

Remember though, these are just retellings of my

I was surprised at how many of these Greek Myths I'd actually in some form heard of before. I find it fascinating that they've been appropriated in some form by various works of literature and film such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Snow White, The Jungle Book, Percy Jackson, Macbeth, Orthello, Treasure Island, Hocus Pocus etc. I find it amusing that these Myths are accepted as such now but at the time they were as believable as religion is to others today; in fact even Jesus, with his ret ...more

Loved this book - really concise but beautifully written retelling of some Classic Greek myths. It never focuses on the parts we all know, preferring to explain the history behind them or present alternative versions. You're given the history behind the Iliad and then the Odyssey in full (always my favourite) with some interesting explanations of the allegories contained in the myths. The beginning section (pre Zeus) was a series of myths I knew very little about but the book does a great job of ...more

This book is about the Greek myths written in an interesting way.

I came across Jean-Pierre Vernant by reading the French philosopher Luc Ferry. If Ferry had groupies I would count in their number, so if he thinks highly of Vernant - well I needed to read him also.

Vernant does a fine job retelling many of the classic Greek myths and providing insight into the more complex meanings behind the stories. He orders the evolution from Chaos to structure and justice in an easy to follow chronology while explaining why this evolution was important for the concept of t

A good read. There were parts that were dull, but the stories of Perseus and Odysseus were really quite good. It also gives a clear cut examination of Greek creation myths, which I never really knew much about. Thank god the Trojan war was not narrated much here (we all bloody know the story) but I did wish for other myths like the story of Heracle. Nonetheless, a good summary of some Greek myths, written quite beautifully.

Vague in parts and at times hard to follow. Very good as a brief skip through some of the more famous Greek myths including tales from Odyssey/Iliad (Homer) - however the book only explores these myths from a singular perspective. Due to the speed at which this book speeds through some of these myths, detail is lost. However an enjoyable read for those starting out and wanting to learn about Greek Mythology.

I really liked the content of the book, but either the translation or the original diction of the book was really weird and poorly written. I felt like there was a lot missing in the book, but it provided interesting insight into some of the interpretations and symbolism (others were a stretch) of Greek mythology. With that being said, the topic is five stars, but the writing and presentation maybe one to two, so by this dichotomy, three stars.

Recommends it for: everyone who is interested in Greek mythology

This book can totally help me understand better about Greek mythology. Now I understand who are the lovers of Zeus and where do all those semi-god heros come from. Also, you read this book, and you already know more than half of the two famous Greek literature "Iliad" and "Odyssey"! This is an amazing book and absolutely a great start for beginners who are interested in Greek mythology!

It was a really good book. I'd definately recommend it if you're interested in greek myths.

The book is translated from frence, and I was worried some of the words would be miscomunicated (Like in another French-to-english book I've read: Winters End). But this was easy for me to understand.

I wish the book talked about more of the myths; at 200 pages this seemed like a sampling.

This was a well-awaited scholarly take on the Greek mythos. I'm so glad to have found this author and I hope to find many of his research books in the future to help me with my own research as I write. Worth the read!
